Yes: 9012 Live (1985)
"Ain't nothing like the real thing, baby"
I also have seen Yes five times (at least) and keep going back not only because of their technical virtuosity, but because their stage show is second to none. They ARE rather visually captivating, employing often stunning effects and robotics, rear-screen projection, complex lighting designs, and other remarkably innovative tricks. As showmen, Yes are quite full of personality. Of course, the movie is worth seeing--sine qua non for a Yes fan, but is only the next best thing. The addition of CGI is certainly an interesting feature and the fact that this is Steve Soderbergh's acclaimed mainstream directorial debut is hard to ignore, but, after all, it's not Yes live.
Battlestar Galactica (2003)
I'm rolling my eyes.
I was never a huge aficionado of the original series, but, as a teen-aged fan of Dirk Benedict, I watched it often enough to decide that this new rendering isn't going to work for me. Its dark, humorless plodding and its attempts at political correctness (where are the hookers?) simply bury any similarity to classic Galactica. I don't mind a little tweaking--the modern SFX are nice, the call-sign idea is creative--but, I have to say that I was disappointed in the way this pilot... took shape. Specifically, the character Olmos is playing bears no resemblance to Adama: he's far too serious and none too fatherly. Turning Boomer and Starbuck into females is not only silly and annoying, but deprives Apollo of the much-needed male bonding element. I know that times have changed, but these factors are too important to the core concept of BG to be changed so radically and still to bear the same title. Name it something else.
I may still watch the new series, but I'll have to forget it's called "Battlestar Galactica."
Eddie Izzard: Dress to Kill (1998)
I couldn't stop laughing!
This is right up at the top of my list of the most hysterically funny shows I've ever seen. I laughed so hard, I'm sure I missed half the jokes. This showcases Izzard as the brilliantly gifted comedian he is. What I particularly like is that he seems never to be "dumbing down" the material for his audience. His timing is impeccable and the routine is tied together as a performance piece rather than just a series of gags. Thumbs way up.
Blast from the Past (1999)
Charming!
This movie is warm and satisfying. A witty comedy with a brilliant cast, including Brendan Fraser--playing yet another displaced character, "Adam"--and an hilarious Christopher Walken as the father. Dave Foley is perfect as the gay friend of Alicia Silverstone's "Eve." This film is a sweet, funny tale and good for the whole family.
Top of the Heap (1991)
I laughed so hard!
This was a charming spin-off of "Married with Children" and lasted all too short a time. It was clever and funny and featured the inspired pairing of Joe Bologna and Matt LeBlanc as father and clueless son. It was hysterically funny--and that's what a comedy is for!
