Elevator Girls in Bondage (1972)
A treasure of Queer Cinema!
It's very much of a piece with The Cockettes' live shows, which is to say chaotic, raucous, haphazard and "amateurish," which I mean in a GOOD way.
It is great fun, and thoroughly bawdy, "not for children or stupid adults" (to quote Karen Finley). It is a wild tranny romp, subverting traditional gender roles and mocking uptight straight -- and gay -- society with merciless abandon.
The film captures a slice of queer culture from the pre-plague era, when being outrageous and having fun was reason enough to carry on in the never-never land of the San Francisco scene.
I understand that one of the Cockettes is selling a DVD transfer of it, but I don't believe it's otherwise available.
Roseland (1971)
"You Cannot F*&k Around With Love."
My oh my; what a trip it was. I loved it, back in the day, but that might have had something to do with all the fun involved in the filming. If you get a chance, it's definitely worth seeing.
It definitely partook of the era, "When anything was possible and very little was probable." Yes, "psychedelic era strangeness," that's a *good* thing to many of us who lived it.
The song referenced as the "summary" above was (as I recall) the main title, played over credits at closing. The image showed the protagonist bound on a raft, drifting away, in the position of being a "human vase," with a rose between his nether cheeks.
It certainly would be loverly if it were available to be viewed somewhere, but I can't imagine that it is.
Rojo amanecer (1990)
An important film, which dramatizes a horrific event of Mexico's history.
Very good article in today's (Oct. 3, 2008) LA Times re the massacre.
The "news peg" is the memorial March held in the capital on Oct 2, 2008.
They mention that Marcelo Ebrard ordered flags flown at half-mast, a major recognition of the event.
It covers the continuing problem of impunity.
It does not, however, mention events in Guadalajara.
The article skims through various attempts to investigate and fix culpability over the years.
It also mentions calls from Amensty International and other human rights organizations for investigations and justice.
