The Day After Tomorrow (2004)
Ouch ..! worse & better than we thought it'd be
As You would expect a spectacular movie that You can afterwards just call "cheezy and cheep" you can really be surprised, cause this movie is neat and serious - and amazing in both ways (positive-negative). You can simply throw out your old skills of disaster -movies, it is not any more a bruncha black & white guys that warn everybody, and later save a lot of people and in the end save the world .. It's not anymore the old routine that in the beginning you see a miserable death (like in Volcano) as a DEMO, and later they dance on the edge of the blade i.e. run on thin ice, but in the end nice and happy people can burst their champagne out of the bottle at the headquarter .. No, it's not that .. Also, it's not that kinda "scenario", in which you see big movie - that would prevent you from ever taking it seriously that the movie was about.. This movie is made in a very clear cut way, there's no blur about Kyoto, or the Gulf Stream, or the melting Ice, and the canoe situation about our climate, that now it's bouncing but once (pretty soon) it can flop over and that cold be fatal. There's no smudge in the view of how a possible ice-age would hit - I mean thru centuries, years, months - or just days .. all in all it gives you a pretty clear view on what is possible to happen - due to being absent from Kyoto. This scientific sharpness gave the right for Roland Emmerich and Jeffrey Nachmanoff to deal with this subject and this sharpness also makes the movie's way really high up to the greatest films like Terminator 1-2. and Titanic.
There could have been very cheesy scenes and very blurry messages and very cheap dramas but it turned out just as the total opposite. It is an amazing movie - with a very serious content. I mean the movie NET was also serious, and the Insider also. But this one is just - I mean it opens a total new culture right now ..
The only thing that is ever smooth & cheezy in this movie is that in this plot the White House is the last to find out about what's happening and US has to ask favor from (former) 3rd world countries .. I mean what if White House finds out (as they already did) about this threat? Will they go to Kyoto and cut down exhaust fumes? Or just find some new home like the American Indians'. I mean just or unjust we are speaking of the military superpower that can take down whole countries if they want. So, I mean, if someone finds it cheezy that US finds out last about Ice age in this movie should consider buying ticket for other genre - like war :(
Armageddon or Independence Day or Volcano and the Core are very weak but could be called "nice" or funny movies, but the Day After Tomorrow is a great cutting edge film. It is just much better than you possibly would have expected. But that thing that happens in it is just way worse.
Mix (2004)
the art of MIXIN' - stuff in2 a movie
This movie just came out in Hungary where it sort of originates from, and it is a very pleasant surprise. It is a simple story, sometimes with kinda emblematic scene, like a Hungarian cab driver that speaks fluent English - even before he finds out that our guy (brand new talent Alex Weed) is an American guy in Budapest.
Or some other time our man, Mitch (still Alex Weed) enters a club where they dance to Hungarian folk music, but the turntables are connected bad to the amp so bad noise only, no music. He comes in, fixes it, and makes friends in a minute .. I should call this a week scene ... should but it still works fine .. and i dindt mention the very good ones.
The grand ma is at lest as cool as Aunt Lotte from Stranger than Paradise... she's not only an old lady . she's a very well built character .. one night Mitch doesn't go out but stays with her at home and she rests her feet in his lap and he gives them a massage .. i don't know how good this sounds but it is a very cool scene .. and it's just one of those ..
I thought that it'd be just another of those movies in which another foreign student writes his/her story, builds his/her picture about Budapest, that would hardly even fit .. but NO ! This is a cool one, i can even say that as a Hungarian person :: very MIX of art and story telling, speed and style, a good movie, at least 1 of the (few) best movies this year

Apám beájulna (2003)
Hungarian Version of Britney Spears kinda Cross Road
These Hungarian girls are already "women" in the Speares sense, they are 15-16 and they do the followings:
-hitchhike Porshes & trucks too, -offer their body for group sex action, -get phisical crush on rock stars at first glance -flirt with practically everybody -when they need money they go to a club to work as erotic gogo dancers..
and they never get in any kind of trouble ..
this flick is supposed to make success at least creators must have thought that they just forgot to add the following components: romance, good music, friendship, parties,
very stupid movie ..
Kill Bill: Vol. 1 (2003)
Tarantino's come back joke ..
Kill Bill .. hm, I prepared myself for the BLOOD and all (that it has been advertised with) but technically i was totally bored .. Yes, One can say that where blood is supposed to be the opposite of boring it's a very primitive level .. but come on, it's not me who wanted the blood, it's Tarantino and the Kill Bill campaign .. I wanted a movie with a story .. That's what I always want .. I only take it as Kill Bill with all the blood is not supposed to be boring in Tarantino's world.. but it is .. i was and it will probably be in February 2004 when we get 2 see the second half of it..
Boring and very artzy, you almost keep hearing Tarantino's mind talking to himself about how much people will hate this or that scene .. but he thinks it's true and beautiful .. I did dislike some of the sceens indeed on account of being very cheap ..
The Uma Thurman character has super power, so when she fights you can already start yawning, let the weapon of choice be kitchen knife or the top-top cult kinda blade, that of the samuraiz.. as used in showdown with the Lucie Liu character.. most boring so far ..
from where i sand it appears so that Tarantino needed to come back, and he had 2 options for that ..
1. introducing a new Tarantino with new a kinda "vision", with a new swift.. showing that he is a different mind already but the same sharp as before.. if not even sharper .. (i.e. making a pretty good thriller, an ordinary movie that is just one of all movies which only shines better)
2. introducing a new Tarantino that has "more to tell" .. like going "down" to where hard core art movies grow .. making a shockingly good art movie .. that tells everybody so much ..
It looks that he needed to come back badly since now everybody already learnt how to make a movie like he showed in 3 masterpieces (True Romance absolutely included), now U turn the TV on and wherever U look U'll find something that comes out of what he created and invented before..
It's like defending the world championship .. Too bad that instead of taking the gloves and making a real smooth or cool or sharp or beautiful movie, i mean a real movie he just created a JOKE ..
PS: For those who for all that really luv Tarantino i suggest don't be stupid, only go watch it when both halves are out .. in February 2004.. peter josvai (cspv.hu)
Vámmentes házasság (1980)
A romantic and exiting socio love-story, with a heart ..
Hungarian taxi driver girl's man emigrates to the west as a dissident in 1980 leaving his girlfriend behind. She and her clever girlfriends finally think up a plan of how to join him. The plan goes like she should marry a West-European guy, so she'll be allowed to leave the country. This is a negative "green card" with the most positive content. The guy they picked happens to be Finnish and nice... This film has a great deal of sociographical value on both Finnish and Hungarian sides . . a very-very FRESH movie ..
Under Siege (1992)
Great movie! All time classic ("csapnivaló")
This was the first "action-movie" that I (by accident) watched and had to say "Great! Perfect!" I'm happy that I didn't mind that intellectual conservations don't take "Steven Seagal" and "action" any seriously. In return I had a great time. Since 92 I've seen it some more times (8 - 9). ÜDV, (csapnivaló)
