Team America: World Police (2004)
Oh my God
Oh, sure it's wrong to laugh at puppet sex and cheap Korean accents, and yet, I laughed so hard that I hit my head on the edge of the coffee table and have the bump to prove it. This film exposes all of our ignorance including our unquestioning worship of Hollywood's phoniest of phonies who have no grasp of the real issues facing America. Even the news media aren't safe. Trey Parker exposes anchors like Pete Jennings who have replaced unbiased journalism with journaltainment. It's hilarious, and it asks its audience to think about America's role in keeping the world safe much more brilliantly than a Michael Moore smear-America piece. I won't spoil the last speech for you, but believe me, it is the most truthful, albeit vulgar, speech that you will ever hear. America? F*** yeah!
A Mighty Wind (2003)
If you get it, you'll love it
Not everybody gets the sometimes subtle/sometimes slapstick humor of Guest and his highly talented troupe, but if you do (meaning Spinal Tap, Guffman, and Best in Show were funny to you) you will LOVE this film. When I saw it the other night, the packed audience laughed so loudly that I think I only heard half of the dialogue. RUN to the theater to see it!
Unbreakable (2000)
Another 2 hours wasted
Maybe I'm not imaginative enough to see past the precious, "look, Ma, I'm an arty film maker now!" quality of this film. Or maybe it's just my eyesight, since I literally wasn't able to see most of this movie due to what I can only guess was either a halogen bulb shortage or this film was actually intended to be a radio drama. In other words, the shots in this film were so dark that facial expressions and body movements couldn't even be seen. The sets, acting and action were in every sense overshadowed by camera work that restricted, and ultimately, annoyed this viewer. Willis and Jackson deserve better. What a stinker.
Making the Grade (1984)
I'm rich, I don't have to be nice.
I'm always amazed when I find people who think Caddyshack is hilarious but have never even heard of Making the Grade. Making the Grade is still the funniest golf/class struggle/gettin lucky/uptight white people movie to date. There's even breakdancing. For anyone who hasn't seen this film and likes goofy 80s fare, run to your video store. For anyone who has seen it and doesn't like it, I must quote Coach, "Attention! Attention! You guys suck!"
Mr. Holland's Opus (1995)
Oh Please!
How many heart-wrenching, tear-jerking moments can Hollywood cram into one film? Gee, I lost count after unrealized dream, deaf son, student dying in Nam, bad marriage, hots for the jailbait student, and a whining chorus of, "Nobody appreciates me!!" all over syrupy string music. Poor Mr. Holland? Poor me!
Der Himmel über Berlin (1987)
God bless you, Wim Wenders
My favorite movie. The most silvery, sleek, black and white photography; the most spiritual and poignant explanation of who and why we are. At one point, Peter Falk explains to the angel, Damiel, that the taste of a hot cup of coffee and a cigarette make being human worth every sacrifice. I would add, so do movies like this one.
