Firewall (2006)
Decent Harrison Ford Movie
First off, I have to say that I don't understand all these people who say that Harrison Ford is too old to play the hero. In this movie he may have played the hero father/husband but it was done in such a way as to show him as struggling in the fight scenes and not being invincible. The movie overall was decent enough, the low points to me are the kid who played Ford's son (very annoying) and the pacing which at times had the audience on the edge of a nap. The story itself may have been mostly rehashed former movie plots but was done in an updated way to incorporate technology. The very end of the movie was pretty cheesy, the ultimate movie ending shot (see the movie and you will see what I mean). I would recommend this movie for a decent 2 hour movie.
Locusts (2005)
No saving grace for this movie
This movie starts off with Lucy Lawless in her underwear in bed, after that there is not anything that happens that makes this movie worth suffering through. The only reasons I watched the entire movie was to see what lame 1) family drama and 2)way to kill the locusts they came up with. Of course Lawless and her husband are having marriage problems and her father just happens to be a crop farmer in an area that will be attacked. During the attack on the farm the characters figure a way to kill the locusts by using electrical current. The only scene that was even remotely interesting was when Lawless almost swallowed one of the Locusts. I love Lawless but she needs to stay away from this kind of crap - is it only coincidence that her name does not appear on the IMDb credits for this movie?
Van Helsing (2004)
Good Movie If You Keep Your Expectations In Line
First off, if you go to this movie thinking you are going to see a classic you are wrong. But with that said, this movie was enjoyable, even with all the CGI (the Jekyll and Hyde CGI was the worst). Hugh Jackman does a good job as the title character, Kate Beckingsale is obviously gorgeous and adds some very welcome aspects. What I really like about this movie is the fact that all of the monster's stories are woven together in a way I have never seen before. Even though some people here say there is no character development, there is some. There are some things I could have done without, especially in the last 10 minutes or so but I won't spoil it for anybody here. I suggest that anyone who wants to see a decent move that is pure escapism - go see this. One last note, I have NEVER agreed with Roger Ebert but I love that he gave this movie a thumbs up.
From Hell (2001)
Not a movie I would recommend
First off the good points: London in the 1880's is shown just the way it was supposed to have been at the time - very depressed and dark. Heather Graham does a fair job in playing an Irish born hooker. Johnny Depp does a surprisingly good job.
Now the bad points: the movie is too drawn out and takes too long to get going. The part that I really despise about this movie is the use of the Masons (a fraternity to which I belong) as a scapegoat. The movie makers should investigate there information more thoroughly before they present their "facts" on subjects they know nothing about. They do try to play down the Masonic part with a Masonic "trial" near the end but it does not work. Also the implications of some of the ruling elite knowing about and sanctioning The Ripper's actions is deplorable.
Don't waste your time on this too long, too boring, too everything bad movie.
Heartbreakers (2001)
Surprisingly Good Movie
I went into this movie expecting pretty much the same old tired con movie but was pleasantly surprised.
Sigourney Weaver is as beautiful as ever and exceptionally funny as the mother/lead con-woman. You can believe that she could seduce any man.
Jennifer Love Hewitt is hilarious and shows that even at her young age she has very good comedic skills and manages to make her character along with the moral dilemma she faces very believable. She does show her incredible body in many, delicious outfits.
Ray Liotta's role is very good if not just a little unbelievable as the crook who falls so hopelessly in love with Weaver that he has to chase her down after their divorce.
Gene Hackman is an absolute riot in this movie, he manages to turn almost choking to death into a laugh riot performance.
Believe it or not, possibly the finest performance in the movie is delivered by Jason Lee. He delivers some great one-liners as the love struck man who is in love with Hewitt.
I would recommend this movie to anybody who wants some good laughs mixed with some decent sex-teaser scenes.
