Swimming Pool (2003)
Good Movie - You won't see this sort of thing come out of Hollywood.
I liked the film very much, but I must warn you: If you are looking for the typical Hollywood fare when it comes to either sex or mystery this is not the film for you. However, if you like a story rich enough to allow you and your life experiences to blend together and make the movie an individual experience, then you have come to the right theatre. Back to Hollywood: I think that it was Marlene Dietrich who said, "For the United States sex is an obsession, for the rest of the world it's just a fact". As for the mystery, the film concerns itself more with developing the characters and their inter-relationships than in presenting us a puzzle with a neat, all-ends-tied-together ending. For me that is what makes the European film industry the film industry of the future. They are not formula driven, not demographically driven, not blockbuster driven. Their motivation is a good story, finely crafted, told in its own way and at its own pace. I hope you enjoy the film as much as I did.
Harry, un ami qui vous veut du bien (2000)
Harry is Michel's subconscious
I think that if you view the film as Michel's becoming aware of his subconscious (as personified by Harry) and his subsequent efforts to deal with and resolves those issues that lay beneath his conscious you will find a truly enjoyable and creative film.
Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me (1999)
Well Below Average
A movie not worth seeing. Truly a waste of scarce resources. A sad commentary on the current state of the cinéma, and, perhaps more so, on its patrons.
The character known as "Fat Bastard", is a disgusting character who serves no plot function other than to remind us that it was we who chose to see this film, and for that choice we should be punished.
Stepmom (1998)
Consistently good acting
The acting was consistently good throughout the entire movie. Especially the surprisingly excellent job of acting done by Julia Roberts. I knew that Susan Sarandon was a good actress and I suspected that Julia Roberts might be from watching some things that she had done during an interview with David Letterman, but I was overwhelmed by how well the trio worked together to create a real family.
