Incident at Loch Ness (2004)
Duchamp would be pleased
A very clever game. It reminds me of Marcel Duchamp's famous painting "This is not a pipe!" as Herzog begins the film talking about his interest in myth and reality and the line that separates the two. This theme is discussed throughout, while, meanwhile, Mr. Penn and his fellow filmmakers are creating an exercise in blurring that line through their movie. Many people, apparently, have left the movie wondering whether or not it was real. It is helped tremendously by the presence of so many credible people and their ability to talk about their own stories and intertwine them with the fictional movie. A mockumentary, like this, would not be nearly as effective if done by "actors" playing parts.
A very ingenious film on many levels.
And Kitana Baker is a hottie.
The Village (2004)
unentertainment
Of the many negative things spoken of the village, I would like to add two things:
First, the bad guys in this film are the parents who are so fearful and lame that they go to extremes to deceive their children into a world of fear, simply so they can live in a make believe world without fear. A more satisfying ending would've included the children finding about their parents deception and leaving to face the "towns" and their parents fears for themselves -- much like what was successfully done in a very similar film, The Truman Show.
Secondly, Night needs to figure out what the word entertainment means. Gee whiz. He's in show business for crying out loud.
Behind the Camera: The Unauthorized Story of 'Charlie's Angels' (2004)
sets and costumes
While in no way a great television film, this project was totally enjoyable for the costumes and set dressing. Attention to detail was very impressive in the recreation of the oh so hip seventies. Also casting of the three principle girls was very accurate. Worth watching for these elements alone. FUN.
Saints and Soldiers (2003)
About as big as a small movie can be.
This is an impressive movie and should be sought out.
Not the greatest film by any means but sufficiently compelling to hold your interest and impressive in any way a small film can be impressive.
Little's direction proves he is someone to expect big things from.
Also impressive are actors Corbin Allred, Kirby Heyborne, and Alexander Niver.
Angels and Insects (1995)
Down right un-entertaining!
Awful! Over the top! Predictable! Self-serving! ... and down right un-entertaining. The subplot of studying the nature of ants in the backyard is the only aspect that held my interest. Oh and by the way, women can't go horseback riding the day after giving birth to twins. A minor note.
Drowning Lessons (2002)
the ultimate sibling rivalry
A nice little film loaded with beautiful images and sexual tension.
The three actors deliver top rate performances as does the cinematographer.
Kennedy's story has many implications but allows the audience to fill in the blanks. Bravo.
