Man on the Moon (1999)
Jim Carrey Has True Heart & Soul
Jim Carrey has brought Andy Kaufman back, and showed him as an uncompromising artist and sweet man/child, which he was. The key scene for me was when he challenged the ABC executives, endeavoring to have an intentional technical "glitch" occur during his infamous special. Not getting the joke, they took the bait... allowing themselves to act just as Andy wanted them to, trying to fix the TV. Anytime you attempt something "different," you face opposition... and Andy comically went against not just the grain, but the entire history of agriculture. He was in a wrestling match for creativity and originality. "Man On The Moon" existing as a major motion picture starring the world's top cinema comedian, directed by an Academy Award winner, most likely proves that Andy won the fight.
Ice Station Zebra (1968)
The greatest film ever made.
Like Howard Hughes, I watch "Ice Station Zebra" on a regular basis. Only daily viewing of this masterpiece unearths the spectacular secrets involving financial solvency this movie holds. Also, the enjoyment of certain libations makes the fake frozen tundras seem all the more real. Patrick McGoohan is a God, and I highly recommend "Ice Station Zebra" to all reclusive billionaires living in Las Vegas and suffering from Obsessive Compulsive Disorder.
Free Enterprise (1998)
A great cable flick
William Shatner is funnier than Leslie Nielson. Too bad the whole movie's not as funny as he is. The guy from WILL AND GRACE is in it too but is just okay. Not worth seeing in the theater for eight bucks but definitely worth checking out on cable.
Hexed (1993)
A Strange But Funny Film
I didn't know what to expect of this movie. Every time I felt like giving up on it, suddenly something hilarious and unexpected would occur. I got the sense that this film may have been drastically recut by the studio because there was an odd "start and stop" quality about it. Claudia Christian is a riot. I wish they would allow her to do more comedy, not just the obligatory genre stuff like "Babylon 5" which I think is cheesey.
Sledge Hammer! (1986)
The Funniest Show Ever
"Sledge Hammer!" was a frequently brilliant satire and much better than the earlier "Police Squad." Making a trenchant statement against violence in the media, the series wound up exploiting it at the same time to hilarious effect. David Rasche was inspired casting the title role. If only this series were on today, it would be a top ten hit. Yet another sad example of a great TV show being ahead of its' time.
