Baywatch: Race Against Time: Part 2 (1993)
Plot holes
Everyone in Baywatch seems to be ridiculously good-looking... except for Hobie's mom, who somehow scores Mitch as a first husband, then a multi-millionaire who looks like a Ken Doll. That's a stretch. As for good-looking people, did anyone else remember the ridiculously good-looking female pilot from part 1 of this episode? Apparently everyone involved in writing this forgot that she existed after she ditches the plane in the ocean. All efforts are about rescuing the 3 passengers... the lifeguards prepare 3 air cylinders to take down for them, but none for the pilot? Is she assumed to have died instantly? If so, no one cares? No one mentions her? Didn't anyone else watching this wonder about her?
Zeppelin (1971)
Unjustly Underrated War Film
I remember seeing Zeppelin as a child in the theater, and it had no problem holding my attention. It is fascinating for its depiction of the WWI era in a way that seems realistic and accurate. The aerial scenes are interesting and exciting as well. There are some weaknesses in the plot, mostly the fact that the mission is really a silly idea... blowing up the Magna Carta? Really? This doesn't remotely stand in the way of enjoying this film, though, because the acting is convincing and the period flavor is so well conveyed.
Michael York does a reasonable job as the junior officer who is drafted as a spy, but the supporting cast is excellent. Any film with Anton Diffring in it is worth a watch, and Elke Sommer reveals some acting talent as well, as a German scientist who is even more ambivalent to the war than York's character. This film is similar to The Blue Max (which also features Diffring) in showing the war from the German point of view and featuring Germans as human beings rather than the one-dimensional demons modern films depict them as being (I'm looking at you, 1917.) This is highly laudable and makes the film more immersive and realistic due to this more neutral viewpoint.
Zeppelin really deserves a fresh mastering and Blu-Ray release due to the excellent cinematography and period sets. The aerial scenes and shots of the airship would look great in high definition. Let's hope this will happen in the near future.
Ant-Man and the Wasp (2018)
Pure Fun
I couldn't believe the negativity of some of these reviews. You're going to see a movie about a superhero in an ant suit and you're expecting Ingmar Bergman? Thank heaven this was nothing like the preceding few Marvel films where we have to endure everything good being destroyed. After the heavy endings of Ragnarok and Infinity War, it was nice to have a light-hearted installment in the franchise, full of action, happy families, science, and the goofy characters we met in the first film. This was actually one of my favorites in the MCU series for just this reason. It's just pure entertainment from beginning to end. Enjoy it! Just turn it off after the initial end credits and before the bonus scene. Trust me on this one.
Thor: Ragnarok (2017)
Not so funny
Highly offensive that the Germanic pantheon is so utterly disrespected in every way here, including scenes where more than half the "Asgardians" are not even European. This film is pure anti-Germanic hatred. We are not even allowed to have our legends anymore.
Mission: Impossible: The Widow (1967)
Disbelief a little hard to suspend in this one.
Slick episode, well acted as usual, but a flawed and naive storyline. Phelps' first job with IMF is relatively easy, but the writers make it more complex than necessary in this case, and the characters don't ring true. Apparently, a cultured German with a cigarette holder is always their idea of a baddie, even when that baddie is a drug dealer. It just doesn't seem right, and the ease with which the rival gangs just walk into each others' houses is also a bit ridiculous. To the point, if they have figured out who all the bad guys are, and can so easily Shanghai them, why not just put bullets in their heads? Sniper (1993) is a much more realistic portrayal of how to take down a drug kingpin, and more realistic about the army that is there to protect him.
The Purge (2013)
Poorly Written and Directed
******* TOTAL SPOILER FOLLOWS ******* This is a great premise and deserves a better story and direction than it receives in "The Purge."If the writers wanted to make us truly hate the son here, they succeeded. The real title should be "Social justice warrior kid gets his father killed, but that's perfectly alright, and he should receive NO blame, since he saved a black stranger." What's scary is how many people just go along with the writer/director's twisted ideals and think this as a realistic sentiment. I'm only glad I didn't pay to go see this... Not only is it a total waste of time, it's an insult to normal sensibility.
Pathfinder (2007)
Hollywood Propaganda at its most Hamfisted
No one writes a book or a film without some sort of angle. Most, especially those who are only marginally talented, will write with one overarching objective: to get his screenplay made into a movie and have a tidy payday. How to do this? Appeal to the powers that be who hold the purse strings. With political correctness raging world wide with an unassailability not seen since the Inquisition, few studio honchos would allow a film to be released that portrays Norsemen in a positive light. Whether it be by fashion or plot, White people can only be evil in Hollywood's eyes, and those of Germanic heritage, be they Norse, German, or English, are the very worst of all. The message of course is to feel BAD about yourselves, White Folks... you are all evil. Your only salvation is to fight against your fellow Europeans on the side of political correctness and kill your evil white brothers in the name of whatever "oppressed" race is the social liberal toast of the day. If you watch this film, you will find it very hard not to see it for the "hate whitey" propaganda it is, since it is really one of the more blunt and offensive examples of this I have ever seen. If you want to see another, watch King Arthur. Same sort of anti-Germanic dreck, though somewhat more watchable than this awful film.
