Freedom Park (2004)
It's not really a movie
So this was made locally and is getting a showing at a local theatre(Worcester,MA)....I like independent movies.I often drive into Cambridge or Boston to see something unique. But this movie is just dreadful. An idiot plot that would be offensive to Italians--if it was a real plot. There is no real acting-- no one comes out of this film looking good. It has the quality of someone's (bad)home movie. Example:A cop who pulls a gun on someone..for what? No idea,he had no reason to pull the person's car over to begin with. This is more than overly broad comedy, this is just plot less, moronic film making at it's absolute worse. When it was over I just wanted to run away from the theatre as fast as possible--I feared seeing someone involved in the making of the movie standing around looking for a compliment.
Ghosts of Mars (2001)
Live from Mars,it's the dope show!
Ok,so the plot makes no sense, the acting is marginal, the special effects aren't too special..and yet why did I come away from this movie in a better mood than most of the summer films I have seen? John Carpenter knows how to direct action-it's comforting to sit back and watch a no-brainer by someone who knows how do it.Is that easy?NO.Look at Tim Burton's horrible remake of Planter of the Apes-the action scenes are just confusing in that movie. Here, the various mutilations, the kickboxing, the zombie killing is done well.Them zombies blow up REAL good. And it must have been a lot of fun to play the Marilyn Manson/Alice Cooper ghouls. Movie gets a bonus point for showcasing the good effects of some illegal drug(tetra what?). But***spoiler alert***...
when I go to an R rated B-movie starring Natasha Henstridge I expect to see nudity. An Alien type scene with her in sexy blue underwear is not enough! Is John Carpenter getting soft? Is Natasha Henstridge turning into some sort of prissy "I don't do nudity unless it integral to the character" silliness? They could have done a great reversal on the old prison guard movies-in this matriarchal society Natasha's character(Melanie) could have forced herself on Ice Cube's Desolation character. They had the handcuffs-and the zombies had left behind some kinky looking S&M tools. What a shame!!!
Planet of the Apes (2001)
Exhibit A on why Hollywood should be destroyed
This wretched, empty, monkey of a movie is devoid of wit, substance, and integrity.Sure the ape outfits are good.Great.If you want to look at monkey suits, waste 2 hours of your life on this film.Maybe the costumes will win awards. The only other award this film will win is for Tim Burton, earning him lifetime membership in the Hollywood Hacks Hall of Fame. Rent the original, skip this.
Blow Dry (2001)
How a great cast can make a really bad movie
So this film, which is being dumped into US theaters under the title of "Blow Dry",has a cast which by itself made me want to see it. Alan Rickman,Rachel Griffiths,Natasha Richardson, plus others.Surely,I thought, they must have read the script, and would only do a film if it was worth doing. WRONG! The movie fails at every level,it isn't funny,it has no insight into the characters, and the pathetic attempt at melodrama by having one character with only a short time left to live is mean-spirited and desperate. What a waste!
Genghis Blues (1999)
And then there are times when you stand in awe
Some movies are immediately forgotten, others leave fragments within your memory. But then there are movies where you sit in the theater in awe.Genghis Blues is a documentary that brings to the viewer a look at a place,Tuva, a style of music, throatsinging, and a portrait of what it is like to be blind. See this movie, you will be grateful to have seen it,you will be grateful to be able to see.
