Yesterday (1981)
Yesterday a.k.a. This Time Forever
I first saw this movie on cable TV back in the early '80s and taped it. I was one of the early video recorder owners and fell in love with the film and recorded it. It was titled "This Time Forever". I'm not sure why it's showing up on IMDb as "Yesterday". Regardless, I had taped it and watched it quite a few times over the years until 2004 when I lost my video collection during a move. I was so happy to find this on YouTube (as "This Time Forever". The emotions came flooding back as if it was the 1980s all over again. It is interesting to look back on this cultural aspect of the Vietnam War when some young American men opted to migrate to Canada as opposed to participating in an unpopular war. It still brought tears to my eyes.
A Summer Story (1988)
Men are pigs
Charming period piece. A story line that sadly hasn't changed much through the ages. As far as this movie goes, the review title pretty much sums it up.
Pride & Prejudice (2005)
Tolerable, but not handsome enough to tempt me
In all fairness, it is difficult to adequately display the richness of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice in a two-hour or less film. Everything seems rushed or clipped as did this version which may be somewhat forgiven.
What I cannot forgive is the set and costume designs. Dull, sloppy and depressed is the only way I can describe them. At the assembly dance, most of the women look as if they hadn't washed their hair for weeks and the dresses were not entirely correct for the period.
The screenplay adaption strayed too far from Jane Austen's style and use of language which caused cringe-worthy moments.
On several occasions I would swear Keira Knightley attempted to emulate Jennifer Ehle's performance in the 1995 mini-series version.
Overall, it was tolerable but lacked so many qualities that was available in the 1995 version adapted by the king of Austen adaptations Andrew Davies and starred Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle. If you liked this version of the story, you would adore the 1995 mini-series.
The Earth Dies Screaming (1964)
Dumb Title - Decent Movie
One thing about the Brits, they can write a good story. Typical 1960s B movie with an above-average storyline.
Moon (2009)
Interesting but not fascinating
With the highly rated scores, my expectations were sadly not met. While the concept was great, the story-line took too long to deliver. I figured out the ending about half way through - it could only go one of two ways.
I think the story would have been better served as a plot to a half-hour or one-hour Sci-Fi TV show than a feature film.
Hunting Atlantis (2021)
Hunting Atlantis... key word being "Hunting"
I doubt this team will ever find Atlantis, even if it does exist as their efforts are greatly lacking. It IS interesting if you like ancient or pre-history archaeology as it offers a good introduction to the subject. If nothing else is on TV, it will suffice.
Debris: You Are Not Alone (2021)
Story line improving but...
Commericals EVERY SIX MINUTES!?! WTH? Maybe I haven't watched anything on network TV lately, but damb, right when you get into the story, BAM! A freakin' commercial. I timed it.
Still not into the male lead. He creeps me out. Maybe that's the intent? I'll give it a couple more episodes if I can tolerate the constant interruptions. Better yet, I'll just record it next time.
Debris (2021)
It has some potential
The story line has some protentional but still too early to tell. The pilot episode had some major drawbacks in my opinion. First there were the commercials every seven to ten minutes. Just when you got into the pace of the story, STOP. Commercial time. When the show came back on and just as you got into the rhythm of the story, STOP. Commercial. I don't know if the number of commercials in this show were normal but they definitely felt intrusive and completely ruined the flow and connectivity.
The lead male character, Bryan Beneventi (played by Jonathan Tucker) did not bring anything to the table. I kept expecting him to turn out to be the villain. For some reason, he just creeped me out.
The lead female character, Finola (Riann Steele) was fleshed out a bit more with the beginning of a backstory. Perhaps this is why she came across as a more believable character.
I'll give it another week or two before making a final decision, IF I can feel engaged long enough to stick with the story given the numerous commercial intrusions.
Absolute Proof (2021)
Absolute Proof of No Absolute Proof
After sitting through this two-hour film, I am disappointed that there was absolutely nothing substantial that we haven't heard before.
Mike Lindell desperately tries to make a mountain out of a mole hill. The problem is, there is no mole, much less a hill.
In the end, I can't help but feel sorry for Mike Lindell. He is so desperate to believe that Trump won the election and that his "proof" is going to unite this country once again. As much as I too would love to see America united again, I'm afraid this film isn't going to do it.
Bottom line, there was absolutely no proof to change anyone's mind on the 2020 election. You either believe Trump won or Biden won.
Black Panther (2018)
Now THIS is Entertainment!
I knew next to nothing about Black Panther coming into this flick. My first and only exposure was via Captain America: Civil War.
The acting was excellent and I thoroughly enjoyed the story-line. I also liked the fact that they had strong kick-ass African women characters. (I suspect this is why so many male users gave this film such low review scores. Poor things.)
I am happy to see a Black Panther II on the boards. Definitely looking forwarding to watching it.
Thor: Ragnarok (2017)
Best of the MCU films I've seen thus far!
I confess, I grew up a fan of DC comics, not Marvel. But the Marvel Cinematic Universe films has totally out-shined any of the DC flicks!
Thor: Ragnarok has been my favorite so far. I found it humorous but not silly, entertaining without dumbing down, and action driven while keeping a great storyline together! This is one of the few films I plan to watch more than once!
(I think I would have given the film a 10 if they hadn't cut Thor's hair.)
Suburbicon (2017)
Quirky and weird, but I liked it
Happened to catch the movie 10-15 minutes after it started. Based on the AT&T U-verse rating of 2.5 stars (no idea where they get that), I didn't think I'd watch the full film, but after another 10 minutes, I got hooked.
Acting was great and really drew me in until I got the gist of what was going on. From there, the crazy story line kept me interested.
Although IMDB gives the film only 5.7, it was MUCH better than that.
Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri (2017)
Excellent film
It's a shame that the writer/director littered the dialogue with so much profanity. Obviously he never spent much time in small town America. I would have gladly given this movie an 8 or a 9, but when you have the censors changing a quarter of the dialogue with bogus swear words in lieu of the real ones, it loses a lot. Having said that - I would have left the theater had the real expletives been flooding my ears.
Sadly Mr. McDonagh's lack of command of the English language as well as his lack of understanding of rural America left this cine filled with holes. Very sad.
Bridesmaids (2011)
Great Movie if You're a 12 Year-Old Boy
This was the most sophomoric, trashy film I've ever scene. I honestly thought it was written by some unknown early 20s-something guy. Was surprised, nay SHOCKED, that it was written by two women. Sigh. Thank goodness I didn't waste any money on it (saw it on TV). I only lost an 1 hour of my life (I couldn't finish watching it) which I'll never get back!
Star Wars (1977)
A Retrospect Review
I originally saw the film at the theater in 1977 when I was 21 years old. I thought it was a great movie, but not the best movie I ever saw. I've seen it two more times since - once on video back in the early 1990s and yesterday on HD TV 43" screen. I can honestly state that my feeling towards this film hasn't changed over the years.
I was never a Princess Leia fan. Her changing accent throughout annoyed the heck out of me the first time and I was surprised it still does today. Carrie Fisher (may she rest in peace) was not all that great of an actress IMHO. She just couldn't pull off the whole sexy-rebel-princess. Come on...she watches her home world blow up and just stands there?
The dialogue was sophomoric but maybe that was intentional and based on the demographics group it was targeting, i.e. teenage boys.
Fortunately for Harrison Ford, his acting improved greatly after Star Wars: A New Hope. I think his looks carried him through most of the film. Pretty much the same goes for Mark Hamill.
All in all, it was a good movie which I enjoyed, but I've never understood the massive hype and fanaticism.
Geostorm (2017)
It's called Entertainment folks!
OK, so it's not Downton Abbey or Independence Day. But if you can't suspend your belief in some actual science and extend your belief in Hollywood - don't bother watching this film.
It IS entertaining. SFX are pretty decent (if unbelievable) but the plot it was carried the film IMHO. I can think of worse ways to spend a rainy Sunday afternoon.
'Nuff said.
Me Time With Frangela (2018)
Hit Mute!
Do these ladies have a volume control? First time I caught the show they were SO LOUD I almost dropped my coffee. I like to gradually wake up in the morning, not be jolted with annoying noise.
Looper (2012)
Original? Violent! Detached~
B for originality, at least compared to what's out these days.
F for gratuitous violence which completely detracts from a potentially good story line. Makes one wonder about the mind of someone who feels the need to create something like this.
F for failure to create any sympathetic characters. You *want* to *like* someone, anyone! Sorry. By end of the movie I didn't care about any of them.
The Bastard Executioner (2015)
Felt like I was watching an ISIS documentary
I am an avid student of history and am keenly aware that brutality was common practice in historic times as well as the present. Sadly, any "entertainment" value of this show went out the window along with the gratuitous and heavy-R rated sex scenes.
The story line seems to have a bit of promise, but I could not get past being physically ill after watching the pilot and second episode to care anymore.
I fear Kurt Sutter and the people that would find this "entertaining" would be the same individuals who look up and watch ISIS beheadings on the internet.
Noah (2014)
Just Say "No"
Don't do it. Save yourself! RUN in the opposite direction of any screen showing this film.
Go play with your dog instead. Read a book. Knit a sweater. ANYTHING. Just don't waste 2 hours of your life that you will never get back.
Any semblance to ANY version of Noah ends as soon as the film begins. Rock monsters. Hundreds of hurricanes covering every square foot of the planet. Water geysers every 50 yards. So much for the molten core theory - we now know the Earth is filled with water.
Pants, shirts, COLLARS!?! Who knew there were such excellent tailors during the Bronze age.
There are no words to describe how horrible this movie is. All I can say is, it is the worse movie I have seen in my life.
MegaFault (2009)
Absolutely horrible on SO many levels
The geography was wrong everywhere in this film! W. VA mountains don't look craggy and snow capped. Lexington, KY doesn't have a river running through it much less a huge granary. The holographic map showing the quake running across the US has the quake going through KY up north around Covington near the Ohio border. Lexington is in the center of the state! The acting was dry and at times annoying. The idea was good, but the script was horrible. CGI wasn't too horribly bad, but what was up with those explosions following the gas tanker while the fault chased them down the road? What really annoyed me were the people catching on fire in the small Wyoming (?) town from the head-up? Not to mention near the ending, when the explosions/faults are chasing Boomer in his Jeep, the large bodies of water nearby remain dead calm – not so much as a ripple. This film was an insult to any intelligent person!
Cinderella (2000)
Thank goodness for fast forward
Bizarre take on the Cinderella tale. Terribly poor script, but Kathleen Turner turns in a pretty decent evil step-mother performance.
Visually stunning in some parts, but that's about it. The period costumes range from the Elizabethan era to the 1990s. Fast forward until you see something interesting and save yourself the full 90 minutes of drivel.
If you're really in the mood for a Cinderella story - I suggest "Ever After: A Cinderella Story" or "The Glass Slipper".
Joan of Arc (1999)
A disgrace to history, France, Joan, and the Church
After the first 15-20 minutes, I had to leave the theater. Without a doubt, this is the worse film that is supposed to be based on a true story. Obviously the screenwriter does not know the truth, nor the story and probably failed history in school. Nothing, and I mean nothing in the first 15-20 minutes of this film was accurate, save that Joan was female and lived in France.
I could not tolerate having my intelligence insulted any longer, so I walked out. I just hope that others who have seen the film realize what they saw bared no resemblance to the true story of Joan.
