Sliding Doors (1998)
Funny, Delightful, and Thought Provoking
What if you missed the train? What if you didn't? That is the concept behind Sliding Doors a simply fascinating and thought provoking film. After I saw this film I was full of what if's. Sliding doors is one of the best British films I have seen in sometime. It just has one major flaw GWYNETH PALTROW. This would have been a really wonderful film if the producers hadn't felt the need to cast a Hollywood actress. Why on earth they cast her in this film is beyond me they would have done much better casting a British actress. Paltrow's accent despite popular belief is extremely forced, although it is mildly better than many other actors attempts.
The rest of the cast is excellent particularly John Hannah. But then again he's good in everything he does. All in all Sliding Doors is a film worth watching.
Great Expectations (1998)
Stylish, Cool Soundtrack with a flawed script.
If this film has one thing it has style. The sets are excellent and has a cool soundtrack to boot. But the story however quickly loses the plot. If you know nothing of the Charles Dickens novel you will enjoy this film but if you know the story you will notice the script has many flaws including the inevitable 'Hollywood ending'.
The characters in the film are under developed. Paltrow does an ok job as Estella and deservingly earns the title of Ice Princess but then again it probably wasn't to difficult for her to achieve. Ethan Hawke does a great job as Finn. De Nero's talents are wasted in this film as are Anne Bancrofts.
Don't get me wrong I did enjoy this film but it could have been so much more had they have stuck to the story and not have felt the need to go all Hollywood.
Mallrats (1995)
Disappointing. Do yourself a favor skip it!
I think this film is what you would call Kevin Smith's commercial attempt.
"Mallrats" is just not funny. I don't think I laughed once during this film. Maybe after watching "Clerk's" I was expecting way to much. I don't know I just dont think it's up to the standard of Smith's other films "Clerk's" and "Chasing Amy". The only reason to watch this film is to catch the very talented Jason Lee he is definitely somebody to keep you eye out for.
What's Eating Gilbert Grape (1993)
A heart warming, sweet film
What's Eating Gilbert Grape? the title of this film is begging for an answer and the film delivers. 'What's Eating Gilbert Grape' is the heart warming tale of the Grape family. In particular Gilbert (Johnny Deep) who so eloquently put by Arnie (Leonardo Dicaprio)is not going anywhere. Gilbert is stuck in a town, in a life of numbing sameness. His routine of caring for his handicapped brother Arnie, working at the grocery store to support his family, and having to cope with the embarrassment of his extremely over weight mother has taken it's tole on him and he soon finds himself headed down the same fateful path as his father. That is until Becky (Juliette Lewis) enters the scene and proves to be a catalyst for change in Gilbert's life.
The film is extremely well acted although Dicaprio steals the film with his portrayal of the handicapped Arnie, Johnny Depp should not be over looked in what is one of his best performance of his career.
The Pallbearer (1996)
Occasionally funny but has a love story that just doesn't cut it
The Pallbearer is a disappointment and at times extremely boring with a love story that just doesn't work partly with the casting of Gwyneth Paltrow (Julie). Gwyneth Paltrow walks through the entire film with a confused look on her face and its hard to tell what David Schwimmer even sees in her.
However The Pallbearer at times is funny particularly the church scene and the group scenes with his friends are a laugh but that's basically it. Watch The Pallbearer for those scenes only and fast forward the rest. Trust me you aren't missing much.
