Kinky Boots (2005)

Well worth importing!
15 April 2006
I admit that I bought this on DVD off Amazon UK well before a US release date was announced, and even before I knew the entire plot. However, I don't regret it one bit. The only reason I bought it was for Nick Frost, whose other works (mostly with Mr. Simon Pegg) I already own. However, the other actors, actresses, and those who have yet to make up their minds, impressed.

Granted, it has a slow start and jarring opening of a certain character's cross-gender opening, but a slow start is what I've come to expect from British films, so it doesn't hurt. And it's not every film where you have a cross-dresser punching a straight man in a back alley. Another caveat is that this movie is based on actual events.

Joel Edgerton as the confused yet ambitious Charlie Price does an excellent job. You definitely feel bad when he's suddenly thrust into a situation he had tried to avoid all his life.

Mr. Ejiofor, though, is my favorite as the flamboyant, beautiful, and delightfully catty Lola. He can definitely carry a tune and bust a move, even in those surely awkward and painful boots. He probably knows how Mister Tim Curry felt now.

Finally, Nick Frost delivers as a hard-working Northampton man with a lot to learn. From his first come-on to Lola to arm wrestling to finally doing a little growing up, I've seen what Nick can truly do when not in fatigues, an obscene t-shirt, or survival gear and goggles. If this film doesn't give Nick a better light to American directors, then something's wrong with Hollywood's good ol' boys.

Overall, it's a fun, funny, yet inspiring tale of finding your niche. I think the PG-13 the US slapped on it is fitting. No sex, but there is innuendo, a bit of language, and a dash of violence. It's Rocky Horror meets Full Monty meets (insert inspirational movie here). But of course, it's an English film, so not all American viewers will "get" it.

Quite the eBay find! *Minor Spoilers*
4 July 2004
Warning: Spoilers
Being in my "Backstreet Obsesso" phase of my life, I found this on eBay when I got home from vacation. From the end of the opening animation it looked "B"ish, but not to the point where I thought it was going to uber-suck. Then I hear a childish voice... "Wanna play truth or dare?" Then pops up an 8 year old AJ McLean, sitting calm as a cucumber while he slices up his wrist with a blade, and then shows it off to his mother like a trophy. Disturbing? Very. But that won't prevent me from asking Mr. No-Name to sign the tape when I meet him in person.

All in all, this movie wasn't THAT bad. Plot holes and repetition, yes. Bad acting, yes. Same old cheat-and-revenge plot? Yes. Entertaining? Absolutely. If you wanna have yer own MST party, this title is perfect for ya. If you're seeking exquisite five-star cinema, this movie is not for you. I found it to be worth every penny I paid once I finished watching it.

O Brother, What A Film!
18 February 2001
Warning: Spoilers
Warning: Contains HUGE spoilers! If you have not seen the film, DO NOT READ!

The movie starts out with Ulysses E. McGill (George Clooney), Pete (John Turturro), and Delmar (Tim Blake Nelson) escaping from a prison farm. When they fail to hop a freight train, they come across a blind man on the railroad tracks, who talks of a treasure that will disappear shortly. While trying to find the treasure, the three have run-ins with the authorities, and also run into many people, but just manage to get away by the skin of their teeth. Pete and Delmar's sins are washed away during their romp at a lake.

Along one road, they come across a young black man named Tommy Johnson (Chris Thomas King) who sold his soul to the devil in exchange for guitar playing skills. Now the group comes across a radio station out in the middle of nowhere, where they sing a song called "Man Of Constant Sorrow" as the "Soggy Bottom Boys." It becomes a hit in almost no time. They lose Tommy shortly thereafter while trying to escape. Then the men come across sirens, who seduce them and lull them to sleep. Ulysses and Delmar wake up to find a frog in Pete's clothing. Delmar insists that the frog be kept, for fear it might be Pete transformed.

In a restaurant, they meet Big Dan Teague (John Goodman), who claims to be a bible salesman, but is truly a con-artist. He attacks them and robs them of their money. "Pete" is also killed. Then it is discovered that Pete has been caught by the police, and is almost flogged into making a confession.

The rest will remain a mystery, unless you've read Homer's Odyssey, then you probably know what happens. Overall, this film is cute, and is almost a musical due to the large number of songs. See this film with some of your friends, and also any teenagers you may know.

In the end, there can be only one.
30 September 2000
WARNING: If you have not seen the movie, DO NOT READ THIS!

Highlander: Endgame is the second best of all the Highlander movies I've seen, followed by the original and the second (which totally sucked in my opinion).

Endgame totally changes Connor's character from a good guy to a rebel, fighting on holy grounds, among other violations. Him and his newly introduced brother, Duncan, constantly have flashbacks to the past 100's of years. Enter Adam "Edge" Copeland of the World Wrestling Federation.

Although his role was very small, and not very vital to the story, Edge puts on a great show as Lachlan, a travelling criminal in the 1700's. For a professional wrestler, he has excellent swordsmanship skills, and did not look one bit afraid of the silver blade.

Anyways, back to the point. Connor gives up the spotlight to Duncan and finally croaks after about 14 years in the Hollywood cult limelight. Another question: What happened to Ramirez? Did he use up all his reincarnations? Guess so.

This sequel lives up to its long time motto: "In the end, there can be only one."

Overall: 9.1 out of a possible 10

Poltergeist: The Legacy (1996–1999)
Brother's Keeper: A Must For Every Video Library
26 June 1999
I am not that much into horror shows, but I believe "Poltergeist: The Legacy" is a show that will get you hooked. When I saw "Brother's Keeper" on a USA marathon, I got hooked watching as The Undertaker (Soul Chaser) was on Jimmy's tail. (Nick's brother) All in all it was a good show, despite the fact that 'Taker died. The bottom line is... it's a good show, with twisting storylines that even I can't come up with!
