Every Day (2018)
If you don't see the problem, I'm so sorry for you
While first trying to forget everything about this book. What I expected to see was an interesting take on what it'd be like living in a world where every day you wake up you're in another persons body. What I ended up with was a movie that I so offended by because all of the bad things, every moment that wasn't great, positive or just existing was played by a person of color. I'm completely serious. Justin? James? George (oh yeah I'm counting this one when his mother calls Rhiannon a whore)? Kelsea? Katie? Yup. This is ridiculous. Even Reverend Poole (who if you did happen to read the book know what's going on with his character) whose entire existence in this film is cut to one line, something like, "I think that's enough" is a black actor. How did no one see this and call them out while they were making the film? Scratch that, considering the Reverend Poole casting I'd say someone may have been intentionally deviant in their casting. I couldn't enjoy any of this. I have to stop now cause I'm not going to be able to not lash out due to my frustration. I didn't give it a one star cause they did actually cast a trans actor to play a trans character and I can't in my heart take that away from them. But everything else doesn't even matter. I actually wasn't that upset with the changes from the book and this is not a review of the book. Right now I hope that I never have to see another film like this ever again. It's 2018 people. This is unacceptable. Get it together.
Selfie (2014)
Somehow they found a way to ruin everything
To say I am a fan of Karen Gillan and John Cho is a fair statement. Actually I have followed them both for the last few years and have enjoyed watching them. Not that I couldn't see them performing together or anything like that but just didn't think the two would ever cross paths. Well, now I see that things were better left undone. I can see the potential for chemistry between them but the show drains all of the possibility away by trying to hard on every other front. This is a train wreck of epic proportions. I honestly don't know what was worse, the awkward man kissing, the ruining of Amiee Mann's One while Gillan holds her vomit in bags on the plane. The over oversexualization of her in bra and panties because.. reasons. Bonus, I'll give you a dollar if you can tell me why almost the entire company is on board for this flight. There's no explanation of this, just a statement to make it known and accept it as fact. I guess those are more reasons.. Then lets not forget the obligatory Chainsmokers track opening up this half hour of pain. Ugh. By the time we get to the ukulele cover of Bad Romance I just couldn't be bothered anyone. I know not one of their names. Even after special care was given to try and teach Gillan the receptionists name. Shame really cause I know that My Fair Lady is exceptional in all forms and somehow this one finds a way to take that away from us. If you so choose to ignore my words be warned, you won't get your life back after seeing it.
Enchanted (2007)
What a complete waste.... of Idina Menzel
Seriously. The references and cameos are adorable please do not get me wrong. I chuckled at a lot of the "fish out of water" moments. I could watch this with children and friends and find it perfectly acceptable. Even better was having honest moments with Giselle and Morgan which were real life lessons in the midst of the fairy tale. Bonus, having the "damsel in distress" switch was a nice pay off in the end but having someone like Idina Menzel who is more than amazing not sing once is a terrible waste of a movie. True she went onto Frozen and most likely will be bigger and better but the surprise in finding her in this movie is tainted by the pure wastefulness of her even being it. Almost anyone could've played her part and the the worst thing.
Drinking Buddies (2013)
Not exactly my cup of...beer?
OK terrible puns aside, I really don't know how to explain this one. It's not that I feel like nothing happened. I understand the relationship between the main characters. I also think that no matter what there were only ever two outcomes from the premise of the film and it did little in the way of shaking things up.
I get it. I know what it's like to have a excellent working relationship with someone and wonder at times "What if?". I also get what it's like having one while being in an adult relationship. Note I did not say healthy. Not that I think either of their romantic relationships were unhealthy, in fact we didn't really get to see enough of them to really say if one or both were destructive.
At the end of the day people are going to talk about how great this film was for its improvisation. I would reply it needed a bit more guidance. You do feel jipped a bit because you keep expecting the physical to explode in fiery passion like many, many other films, movies.... television. It is sad that we have become accustomed to that but in reality things don't really work like that. It may be hot and heavy for a little while but then.. well it would be the other kind of relationship the young adult kind and that would be even more unfortunate.
Despicable Me 2 (2013)
Ta-da!
Oh yeah, I did it, I did it!
OK seriously. The first one was magnificent, the sequel... while it did make me a bit nervous on hearing the announcement....delivered.
Honestly it was so much fun. I thought I would be watching this by myself tomorrow (July 3) but on a whim decided to check the times to see when I should set my alarm for the first showing. Lo and behold there it is, July 2. Showtimes. I head over to the theater and find my favoritest boss in the whole world and some mutual friends of ours.
We laughed our pants off right from the opening "Ta-da!" until the last... hehehe bottom.
Highly recommended. Take the entire family. It's great. I am so happy they made this one.
Lost Girl: Original Skin (2011)
One of Lost Girl's finest!
Honestly, anyone who has been watching this shown until now has probably realized that this episode is special. Without giving too much away there's a little hook that is played out very well in this 45 minutes of awesome. I love how the creative team, cast, and last but not least the crew work this angle out. Basically it goes down like this. The "Team" find themselves trying to find a killer all while in the Dal where they have had their bodies switched. Sounds simple right? Well of course it isn't. I can tell that the cast took their time getting into character because it's not just the tone or the mannerisms but the entire package of trying to act like another member we have all gotten to know and love. While there are many memorable moments of laughter there's also a few where we get the first bits of understanding for some characters and their relationships with others. Bonus, we even get a nice reveal of new information on some members of the Team. It doesn't quite hit yet but it doesn't need to, you remember what happens when it matters. This one stands on it's own though, it can be watched repeatedly and it still feels fresh. I appreciate it even though it can come off as a bit of fans service. Trust me. I am completely OK with that. Overall I like it because it stands out. Anyone who's a fan can tell you about this episode without confusion. Some of the finer points may get fuzzy but overall it's an impressive addition to the series.
How to Make Love to a Woman (2010)
Ugh, if only I stayed away.
The ENTIRE premise of this movie could've been worked out if Andy simply just asked Lauren on her feelings on this relationship. Sadly about 15 minutes in I realized that would never happen and the entire movie would flounder around to terrible excuses for friends and family just wasting 90 minutes of everyone's time. Like others have stated it has an overabundance of clichés and it makes watching this very frustrating. Even if in making this movie the protagonist decides to go about things on his own there are many better ways to do this, instead it's like I've seen this story many other times over, and sometimes done much better than this.
Other gripes, the ending almost killed it and that's why I'm no longer fluctuate between 3 and 4. I mean I've seen worse but really it wasn't funny. Also the editing of the movie and sound were definitely below par. There were points where I could hear thing that were on screen and they didn't match up and times where the scenes were cut poorly with moments that could've been funny but didn't hit because the transition was off. Also the little "reality TV" interviews, confessionals (à la Mr. and Mrs. Smith), highlighted when things weren't working either. Either you met people you weren't introduced to or the confession wasn't really the point. Honestly, I'm not going to harp on about it too much. It was rough, there were a moments when I thought things were cute, mostly with Krysten Ritter but other than that? Nothing.
Honestly it could've been worse and I know I've definitely seen worse but in the end the only thing that save it was the music. The soundtrack was pretty impressive. Sadly many scenes didn't work with the music or was cut to a zero level so you could hear some of the awful script. I would buy the music, if there's a list somewhere I'm in. Other than that this was an unfortunate movie.
Project X (2012)
If you're complaining you obviously wouldn't be at this party!
Honestly I see all the hate about this movie and I think you clearly don't understand. This is the gold standard to anyone ever going to try and be cool. If the internet was around when I was a kid, or rather it's rabid popularity among teenagers, I may have burned down my own house to try and be this cool. I know it's completely unrealistic, and no dude would ever get with all those females, blah blah blah... like I said you missed the point. This movie (while not as great as the original Hanover) is everything anyone trying to be awesome is all about. If you are still hating, keep on, cause you're home alone bored out of your mind wondering where it all went wrong. The rest of us know where it's at. Thank you.
