Transmorphers (2007)
Really REALLY BAD!!!
When I was young the TV series "Blake's Seven" ran, the special effects were awful, but the story-line and acting was gripping so it was very watchable. Transmorphers has none of these redeeming features and is utter dross from start to finish. I can't understand how any of the actors were persuaded to appear in this unless they were supermarket shelf-stackers on a day out with no professional career to ruin! It reminds me of war games my friends and I played as children - making up the story as we went along, I think that this is how this film was made. I watched this right through to the end, hoping against hope that there would be something that would reveal that this whole film was just a joke but unlike the similarly badly made but brilliantly marketed "Blair Witch Project" they have failed to sell this as a student first effort or provided any good reason for its creation on any level. One hour and twenty seven minutes of my life that could have been better spent watching re-runs of Tellytubbies!
Lost in Translation (2003)
Not the most boring film I've ever watched - but a leading contender for the title!
Apart from the moody Japanese scenery (and the director seems to feel the need to show mount Fuji at frequent intervals to remind us), this movie seems to have no redeeming features. The differences between Japanese and western culture is not, in itself, sufficiently interesting to carry a feature film. I can't believe that anybody would have so little imagination that they couldn't find SOME amusement other than really bad Karaoke. It has proven very difficult to find ten lines of text to write about this NOTHING film. Most of the points made by the movie have been made much better in earlier movies! Luckily, I didn't pay to rent it so I don't feel quite so cheated. But I'll never get the 102 minutes back!
One Fine Day (1996)
A heart warming comedy/drama
A heart warming comedy/drama reminiscent of Neil Simon's Goodbye Girl in that apparent mutual dislike, (not to say hatred), fuelled by awkward circumstances is later revealed to be love at first sight.
Not nearly as slushy as the above description suggests. The old theatrical advice not to work with children is proven false, since the cute kids in this movie, while central to the plot, do not steal the show.
At times hilariously funny. Not quite a classic but a worthy contender for the title
Sunday Too Far Away (1975)
Outback Realistic Comedy
The first time I saw this film was in my capacity as a projectionist on board a Royal Naval Warship. By the end of the first reel the dining hall (Cinema) was deserted except for myself and one other everyone having been put off by the lack of action. Because there was one remaining viewer I was obliged to show the entire movie. We were richly rewarded because this film is full of finely crafted observation well portrayed by fine actors expertly directed. A rich vein of understated comedy runs just beneath the surface occasionally erupting most notably in the hand laundry scene and again in the undertaker scene. Altogether a worthy film which should have received greater acclaim
The One That Got Away (1957)
I first saw this movie as a child
I first saw this movie as a child in my small local cinema. It had a profound effect on my (and my friends) attitude to the German people, (remember that this was only 12 years after the war) Our whole concept of Germans as 'nasty baddies' was turned on its head. It was probably the first step (I was six years old) in my realisation that things are not black or white. The scene with Hardy Kruger hiding from his pursuers behind a stone wall wearing flying boots is still etched in my mind more than forty years later
Centennial (1978)
Great Western Series
Probably the best TV drama series of the 70s, and undoubtedly the best Western series. Cast with (at the time) largely unknown actors this story was not even approached for quality until "Lonesome Dove" many many years later, which starred some of the leading actors of the day.
