Hendrix (2000 TV Movie)
"cliff notes" movie
1 April 2003
I have been a huge Hendrix fan for many moons and I was prepared to hate this movie. And I did hate it. It glosses over many key points of his life and blows other avenues out of proportion (ie why emphasize the relationship with Fayne Pridgeon and not even touch on Devon Wilson?). This was like a "cliff notes" movie about a beautiful creative genius and it just reminds us of what the original managers did to Jimi when they insisted that he cut his songs down to under three minutes. And no offense to Wood Harris, but couldn't a better looking guy have been found?

Pollock (2000)
Happy to finally see it
1 December 2000
I had studied the work of Jackson Pollock in college and I'd heard that there was a film project in the works about 5 years ago so I was very excited to see what the result was. I was not disappointed. It is difficult to portray any artist on the big screen and one as complex as Pollock...well, let's just try to recreate his paintings with crayons shall we? There were aspects that were omitted but for those that don't know him, this was a good overview. For those that know more about Pollock there may be some disappointment in the film but his moods, his relationships with his family and others in the art world, all of it was secondary to the art and that was the most important thing to show. And Ed Harris did a great job.

Fight Club (1999)

What an amazing picture
18 November 1999
Okay, I've seen this more than a few times and found time to read the book as well. It's really an amazing piece of work. The pace keeps you riveted to the screen, the plot twist shakes you up and the music score enhances the overall feeling of the film. I would have liked to see an expansion of "Jack" after he realized what was happening to him, the short clips gave you a taste but it left me wanting more. Edward Norton is so talented, I loved his facial expressions, Helena Bonham Carter finally broke out of that porcelain doll stereotype and Brad Pitt, well, I've never seen anyone look so good in a pink bathrobe. Forget what Roger Ebert says about this film. Go and see it for yourself and think about your own life. Wouldn't it be great to have that kind of freedom?

too much for me
11 August 1999
This movie was an interesting combination of fantasy and reality. It pulled you into the story and I really felt a connection with the characters. Anyone who has spent time in the woods camping or hiking could feel a nerve being touched. It became too much for me near the end and I'm very wary of trucking through the woods on my own anymore. "Just a movie"? Perhaps, but a plausible enough story and it really gave the viewers a chance to exercise the imagination. I think my imagination needs a long rest after this...anywhere but the woods.
