Snow Falling on Cedars (1999)
A very good film
I thought that this film was quite well done. The story was presented in an interesting way, though without knowing what the movie was about it would be hard to grasp at first.
The atmosphere was superb. Eerie, and kind of mysterious and romantic. The forests were very beautiful, but overused.
The plot moved a bit too slow, some scenes dragged out for a while, such as the first scene with the lantern. It set the atmosphere well, but continued too long.
The main characters (Ishmael and Hatsue) weren't given enough for their characters to develop. Ethan Hawke did as well as he could possibly do with his meagre amount of screen time. The Japanese actress also did quite well. Kazuo's lawyer was well played by the actor. Eccentric, and strange. It was probably one of the most well developed characters in the movie.
The music was a bit overbearing at times, and almost seemed quite silly, but it did increase tension. It distracted from what was happening, because of the irritating loud notes.
The overlapping of dialogue was an interesting touch, though somewhat hard to understand. It did give emphasis to certain lines though, and I guess that is what is important.
Overall, the film was very good, with a few rough spots here and there.
House on Haunted Hill (1999)
A waste of time
Well, I'm glad I saw this movie at a cheap theatre. It's one of the worst horror movies I've seen in a long time. The beginning was watchable, but the ending was just plain stupid. It was not scary at all. Not even a little. "The house is alive"???? How stupid can you get? I laughed throughout it. The only good death scene by any of the main characters was Bridgette Wilson's, and it still doesn't make too much sense. Stupid movie. Don't watch it.
Odd Man Out (1999)
Good, but a bit repetitive.
I watched the show for the first time last night. The best part is definitely Erik. He is so incredibly hot, and has some talent. He was walking around with his shirt off in the beginning, and wow, he just blew me away. They say the same lines too much such as "Of course, it's me" and stuff like that by the same character over and over, but other than that the show is interesting, and funny.
Strike! (1998)
A Movie Almost all Teenage Girls Will Love
I went to see this movie on my 15th birthday. The theatre was quite empty, considering it had just come out. One of the problems was that it was given such bad reviews by all the newspapers. The problem is the reviews were written by middle aged men, which is definitely not the target audience. No wonder it didn't do well. I loved the movie. Every second, every scene. I wished I were one of the main actresses in it. I was a fan of almost all the main actresses, Kirsten Dunst, Gaby Hoffman, Rachel Leigh Cook, and the actress who played Tinka. The whole movie looked like a lot of fun. Though it was full of cliches, it was still worth seeing, and I would see it again, and again, and again, if it wasn't for the fact that I can't find it in any movie stores. This is definitely a movie that you would want to watch with your best friends, with a pint of ice cream.
It (1990)
Warning: may be spoilers ahead
The second I saw this filmed it captured me. I've seen it three times in three days and could watch it again, and again, and again. The first half has no words to describe it. The children are wonderfully cast. They make the movie. Sadfully, the adults are quite boring, and are either given bad lines, or are just bad actors. Henry Bowers still haunts me, especially the part where him, and two of his friends are scaring Eve, and the old man doesn't do anything about it. Emily Perkins gives a great show of terror, and fear in her eyes. I would love to find out what happened to her. The same with Jarred Blanchard (which I'm wondering if he's the same person as Jarred Blancard). Anyways, the second half was actually kind of dull, but the awesome first half made up for it. Though long, the film would have been much better, if longer, so more details could be given. I'm definitely going to read the book, and find out the details. Pennywise the clown will always scare me. After the sewer part I rid my room of any clown in sight.
Now and Then (1995)
Awesome
I loved the movie the first time I saw it. I used to be obsessed with it. I remember watching it so many times (I bought it on tape) and analysing it. I even have the script (written, by me, very painstakingly pausing the movie). Me and my friends in the neighbourhood used to act it out. The adult part is definitely unnecessary, but the parts with the children are easy to identify with. It's a great movie about growing up.
