Battlestar Galactica (2003)
Better than expected
A far darker version of Glen A. Larson's 1970s original. I'm a fan of the original T-V series and was prepared for disappointment, but found the mini-series much better than I expected -- particularly the compelling performance of Edward James Olmos. Refreshingly, the story was driven by plot and characters without heavily relying on special effects -- which weren't mind-blowing but were pretty well done. All characters were familiar from the original movie and series, but altered in interesting ways. Some of the story devices are very familiar to fans of the Terminator series or Independence Day. The one disappointment was that some of the idiosyncrasies -- such as time being measured in microns instead of minutes -- and characters only having first names (here Adama becomes a family name) made things seem too earthbound.
This Earth Is Mine (1959)
This film is like flat champagne.
The story of the wine-making Rambeau family during Prohibition sounds like an amazing premise for a movie. Unfortunately, it degenerates into a flat, soap-operatic and trite tale of an over-privileged dynasty. It's hard to develop any sympathy for the characters, the acting and dialogue are stiff, and the story unfolds with all the gusto of watching wine ferment. If this was champagne, it would have been born flat.
