Father Guido Sarducci Goes to College (1985)
Very entertaining obscure 80s gem
I just recently picked this video up at a rental store closing sale. I had never heard of the video before, but I do remember Father Guido Sarducci from Saturday Night Live. The tape only cost me two bucks, so if it sucked, I didn't really lose anything and at least I had something very obscure to show friends. But, I sat down and watched it, and I was extremely impressed. Father Sarducci was able to maintain the comic spirit throughout the entire show and he was hilarious at some points. While he is playing a character, which of course helped with some of the jokes, the man himself has very good comic timing. I thoroughly enjoyed this video, and I would say if you ever see this rarity anywhere, pick it up for sure, you will not be disappointed.
Lake Placid (1999)
Pure Gold
This movie is perfect from start to finish. I did not get the opportunity to see the movie while it was still in theaters. I rented it when it came out on video just for the hell of it. I had no idea what the deal with the movie was, and figured, if anything, I could shut it off after a half hour if it was awful. By the trailer, I thought it was a straight up horror flick.
IT IS NOT. Did you catch that? It is not a horror film. Not in the least bit. It is a pure horror/comedy hybrid. The scares are evident on occasion, but it doesn't take up too much time. Instead, the comedy has a chance to shine. I absolutely was in love with this movie from the first time I saw it, and have since watched it many times without any diminished appreciation. The dialogue and interaction between the main characters is simply brilliant. Some have said that the story is flimsy, I disagree. It's not air-tight, but it certainly isn't just plain ridiculous.
My review will not help you determine if you will like the film, you have to see it to decide for yourself. I used to put stock in the user comments on this site, but now I decide for myself before reading any reviews. If you look at the reviews, you will notice that the people who hated it, hated it a lot, and the people who liked it, loved it and raved about it. I am of the latter group. I tell everyone to rent this movie, some like it, some don't.
A very simple test to see if you will like this movie is this.
Did you see the either of the first two House movies? Did you like them?
If you answered yes to both questions, you will absolutely love this movie. Steve Miner, who directed the original House, directed Lake Placid. He has a great sensibility for horror/comedy, and it certainly shows in this movie.
Seriously, whatever anyone says doesn't really matter. I love this film, and I don't see why anyone wouldn't like it. It seems that most people that don't get it, consider it a poorly made horror movie. While, the truth is, this is an expertly made comedy film.
Go rent it for yourself, you won't regret it. I promise.
Planet of the Apes (2001)
Very Well Done
Firstly, I think the original Ape movies are among the finest films ever produced. The entire series is brilliant and I frequently watch them. I'm not a big Sci-Fi fan, but those movies are just about the best representation of a mix-and-match between social satire and pure "what if" filmmaking that makes viewers question themselves.
But anyways, the new Apes movie is no different. The only thing that I really have issues with is the fact that some of the characters didn't really serve much purpose. I don't know if they had all their lines cut out or what, but they don't really do a whole lot for the film. Even Mark Wahlberg doesn't have a hell of a lot of dialogue. But the film starts off much different than the first, and continues along that idea. Most of the same themes are revisited, but skewed a bit. The cinematography and makeup are both amazing. This movie lived up to my expectations. Go see this movie and judge for yourself. I heard people coming out of the movie and saying that it sucked. But, they probably have no basis for comparison if they haven't seen the originals. I would give this movie 9/10. Nearly perfect.
Memento (2000)
Remarkable
Memento is one of those movies that you watch almost all the way through
without completely grasping the quality of the film you're viewing. It's a
film that I went into knowing quite a bit about, but thankfully not
anything
that isn't already established in the opening scenes.
Everything in the movie sprawls out like a huge map to the solution of the
puzzle. As I sat watching the movie, I thought I had the ending figured
out
numerous times. I couldn't have been more wrong. The movie is a true
phenomenon of film and deserves to win many many awards. The story is
great, character development is top notch and every character gets deeper
and deeper as the story is told, the camerawork is great without being too
artsy, the quick cuts work very well in both dramatic and comedic aspects.
While the movie is suspenseful and dramatic, the comedy is top shelf. The
comedic timing of the actors, combined with cuts at the right time make
some
scenes laugh-out-loud funny.
Joe Pantoliano is fantastic as Teddy, and provides much of the film's
humor.
Guy Pearce provides tour de force performance that won't soon be
forgotten.
Carrie-Anne Moss rounds out the top three billed with a quality
performance.
In conclusion, you have got to see this movie while it is still in the
theater. You will regret it for the rest of your days if you don't see it.
My favorite film in 99 was Fight Club, last year it was O' Brother, Where
Art Thou?, and I think it's safe to say that Memento has gotten the nod for
