The Silent Alarm (1993)
Excellent short
Rob Morrow has created a very nice little film here. It's the story of a little fatherless boy who's mom takes an interest in the man who comes to install a burglar alarm.
We first see the boy hesitant and cautious about letting this strange man into his life, then he falls for him only to find out the man is not the loveable guy he appears to be. The story is told brilliantly with very few words, driven by great direction and Pat Metheny's great score.
It's a shame short films such as this don't get the chance to reach a broader audience.
Message in a Bottle (1999)
Overlong and predictable
I knew this film was in trouble early on. Female reporter is intrigued by letters that have been found in bottles and goes to meet the man who wrote them. When she finds him, does she explain why she's there? Of course not. Then you wouldn't have a movie.
It's all too predictable as she pretends to have different intentions and fishes for information on the guy's life. I won't spoil anything but I'll just say nothing came as a surprise and I just kept waiting for some resolve which took forever to come. Good movie to fall asleep to I suppose.
A good cast, forgiving the fact that Robin Wright Penn just seems to be doing her best Julia Roberts impression.
Second Sight: A Love Story (1984)
A heartwarming love story of a woman and her dog
This little gem is perhaps Elizabeth Montgomery's finest performance. She portrays a blind woman who first acquires a guide dog, becomes very attached, then is able to regain her sight and makes a decision that's a real tear-jerker.
Too often we forget what a brilliant talent Ms. Montgomery was, thinking of her only as "Samantha" but this movie is a vivid reminder of her excellence as a dramatic actress.
Unfortunately it's a hard movie to find. Look for it on cable and don't miss it if you have a chance.
Lord of the Flies (1990)
Looks good, but overall not a worthwhile film
This film is very pleasing to the eye. Unfortunately it falls short in terms of substance. The young actors don't manage to get anything across other than what great underwear models they would make. It goes without saying that the film doesn't do the classic novel any justice. If you want real adventure, visit your local library and pick up the book.
