Savage Honeymoon (1999)
Entertaining
This film has a simple storyline which revolves around a family that likes to have fun. NZers (particularly Aucklanders) will understand some of the humour better, but it is genuinely funny for anyone. It embraces Westie (West Auckland) culture in all it's leather wearing, bike riding, booze and rock fuelled glory. The characters are great, they have strengths and weaknesses and they love to party. Not brilliant, but not bad. A very entertaining movie, 7/10.
The Straight Story (1999)
A Beautiful And Extraordinary Road Movie
This film is pretty much perfect. It's hard to comprehend that this is actually a true story. The Straight Story is very slow paced, to it's credit. I just couldn't believe how slow Alvin's mower was when he started his journey, yet he was determined to go for 350 miles. The cinematography was beautiful with it's panoramic shots and pans. The acting was phenomenal and Richard Farnsworth should definitely win the oscar for his stunning portrayal of Alvin. He explored the themes of family and growing old so well, particularly in silence. He did the job so faultlessly that you could understand what was being said when nothing was being said. The score by Angelo Badalamenti contributed so much to the emotion of the story. I especially liked the 'road theme' which recurred throughout the film. David Lynch really is a master of his art form.
Rushmore (1998)
One of the best comedies I've seen.
Extremely funny. Max is a unique 'student' who wants to stay at Rushmore for the rest of his life, and uses his extra curricular status to try and score first grade teacher Miss Cross. I enjoyed the acting talent very much, particularly the young Mason Gamble's Dirk Calloway, and Jason Schwartzman's (nice but slightly insane) Max Fischer. Bill Murray's facial expressions as Herman Blume are downright hilarious. One of the best comedies I've seen.
