Surf Ninjas (1993)
It's a comedy...
You have to watch this movie realizing that it's a goofy comedy, and that's what it's meant to be. If you are watching it for it martial arts value, then you might be confused at best. Laugh at it, it's funny. If you watch it with kids, it's helpful. The characters are likable, and it is every bit quote-able as a movie like Caddyshack. What's cool is, that people don't know this movie like Caddyshack or Stripes or The Blues Brothers or Spinal Tap. So, you and your friends should watch Surf Ninjas over and over-learn it, know it, live it. Then when you are in public, you can quote it, and people will think that you are clever, and not just guys who sit around watching the same movies over and over so that you can memorize all of the famous lines and quote them word for word. Buy this movie. Trust me.

Don't let the name scare you away
I would guess that people who take the time to write reviews of movies on IMDb will tend to NOT like this movie. The name is not good, makes it sound like a horrible movie that you turn off in the first 10 minutes, and give in to watching Sportcenter, because nothing else is on. I even bet myself that I wouldn't make it through the first half hour. Well, I was wrong. It certainly isn't a ground breaking film, or anything that will win a film festival, but let's be honest, I just wanted an hour and a half of entertainment. I've always "liked" Catherine Zeta Jones(which means I think she's hot), so I figured it would be worth watching her. But it turned out that I also liked the characters too. NOT liking the characters is usually what prompts me to turn a movie off. Bad characters are most often a result of bad writing, a problem that this movie doesn't have. I was surprised several times with well written moments. I kind of hoped for a different ending, but then, I almost ALWAYS hope for a different ending. Hollywood only seems to have one ending though, and if I want to see the ending I REALLY want, the movie most likely has to be shot in 16mm. Anyway, if you like this kind of movie, then this is a movie you will like. I have this theory about romantic/comedy movies that one of the two main characters tends to be unlikable, or at least LESS likable. For example~You've Got Mail AND Sleepless In Seattle~to me, Meg Ryan's characters are both fairly irritating. Notting Hill~I didn't really care for Julia Robert's character at any point in the movie. Here though, I really like both of these characters, and relate to them both in a positive way. I say it's worth your time. Don't let the bad Hollywood name scare you away. Get some wine and something to snack on, and you really can't go wrong.
The Art of Travel (2008)
well
I was hoping to like this movie more but ultimately I just couldn't. The issue I have is that it doesn't really speak to me, to who I am. I realize that the main character is quite a bit younger than I am, but I can't remember a time past the age of 14 when I would have rather done anything by myself than with a woman who I was in love with. So I had no chance of identifying with this character, or even living his life vicariously. I thought to myself-I'll go to Prague with you!!! And that's where I wanted the movie to go. But no, it followed a typical American TV movie theme to a kind of surprise ending involving a lame practical joke, leaving me feeling happy only that I didn't have to watch it with 20 horrible cell phone and lite beer commercials mixed in carelessly. One of my favorite stories is that of Robin Lee Graham who at 16 set off to sail around the world, and eventually meets the woman he marries. I read that book at age 12, and then again at age 16. By the second reading, I realized how much more powerful the story is BECAUSE of Patti(his wife). That's what I wanted from this movie. That's not what I got.
The Passion of the Christ (2004)
Why?
Why was this movie even made? If you watch this movie and become filled with anger toward the people who did this to Jesus, you really should start to question your beliefs. And maybe that's why it was made... Why do I need to write 10 lines? I don't have that much to say about it. What I said was all I wanted to say. I did like James Caviezel-he's always pretty good. Three more line-wow. I was emotionless throughout this film. So it failed to do anything for me but make me think that Mel Gibson should stick to acting. Sorry. If you are a Christian, then you are already familiar with this story. What I think would have been better would be to make a movie that showed other aspects of Jesus's life. We always focus on tragedy and anger, just what he didn't want. Fail.
Hounddog (2007)
Again, it's a movie...
Sometimes I think that people(especially people who write reviews of movies)either forget that it's just a movie, or are reviewing based on their feelings toward the characters and subject matter. Hounddog is not a masterpiece, sure. But it's not unwatchable. At least the music is good, unlike similar movies that have a strong musical theme. Elvis is the worst music in the movie! But once again, Americans show by their reaction to this movie that violence is still a more acceptable theme than sexuality, and that rape is still not considered a violent assault, but an unwanted sexual encounter(I had forgotten about the controversy, even while watching the movie, I guess because I didn't see as sexual at all). Dakota Fanning is very sensual in this movie though, which I'm sure makes a lot of people very uncomfortable. My biggest complaint about this movie is that it's somewhat vague, until the part where they force resolve on us like a 1/2 hour sitcom. I think it's still worth watching though.
Honeydripper (2007)
It is a movie, after all...
This movie got my attention right away with the music in the early scenes. But that's also where it lost me. There are only a small handful of movies about music that really capture the true essence of live music performance, and for me, this movie is ultimately not one of them. I'll say, though, that I enjoyed the movie as a whole. But knowing live music performance like I do, the "Guitar Sam" show scene left me squirming on the coach. It was far too "rock and roll" for the era, and the situation. And for a throw-together band, far too polished. Because of this, I couldn't help wondering if they have also missed the mark with their representation of life as an African American in the 1950's south-something I have NOT experienced for myself. It seemed pretty bad in the movie, but maybe it was FAR worse in reality. Like I said, I did enjoy the movie as a whole. But couldn't the band mess up ONE ending, at least?
Cadillac Records (2008)
That's not so good Al...
If you ever wanted a good example of irony, this is it. Once again, these artists are taken advantage of, this time by the movie industry. The very fact that they failed to use the amazing original recordings of these artist(most likely to save on production costs)shows that the filmmaker had ultimately no real interest in their music or history, and just wanted to make some money(and keep it all for themselves again). The one and only redeeming quality of this movie is that hopefully, people who watch it will find the REAL recordings of these artist and actually LISTEN to them. I myself don't care about their personal lives. I just love the music.
