The Green Mile (1999)
A religious film
I have loved the film. The players were wonderful but the true success lies not in their performances but the characters generated. All of them were unforgettable.
I think the film is based on religious themes. The J.C. annotation (John Coffey-Jesus Christ), giving life back to dead, etc. All of these were interesting. Coffey suffers from the crimes of other people just like J.C.
Go and see the film if you haven't. You won't regret it.
The Sixth Sense (1999)
A balloon
I have been waiting a long time to see this movie. Everyone I knew was talking about it; especially the end of it. In my opinion, the most of the movie is just boring. The only interesting thing is the cast. The end is really intelligent and nice. But a nice idea does not make a movie a success. Frustrating...
The Theory of Flight (1998)
How nice, but couldn't it be better?
Sometimes, when you grow weary of all the glamorous! American style movies, you look forward to seeing one from Europe that does not deal much with the art's technological aspects but the story and the feelings alone. I have thought that "The Theory of Flight" was a film of emotions and atmosphere. Honestly, I think it was planned to be that way. Unfortunately, the result was not satisfactory. K.B. and H.B.C. are great, I can't ignore their invaluable contributions to the movie. But I feel something was lacking. The characters were not deeply analysed maybe, or the situation of being "cripped" was mentioned better in other films (remember "My Left Foot"). In the 15. minute of the movie, we have learned that Jane was desiring to lose her virginity like normal people. And the story finished! Nothing else. The remaining portion just concentrated on this matter. How about Richard's own problems, Anne's point of view on having a daughter like Jane? In fact, we don't understand Jane's feelings, too. We just make guesses depending on our knowledge of other movie characters. I finally must say that seeing K.B. and H.B.C. together in a movie was nice. They play their roles very well. But as a whole, "The Theory of Flight" is a shallow movie. It should have been better with these players and this interesting story.
Eyes Wide Shut (1999)
A straightforward look on relations
I think the film mainly focuses on sexual relations in the civilized world. The players are so perfectly suited in their roles. Please look at Tom Cruise's development; from the teenager idol in "Top Gun" and "Cocktail" to a real good actor in "Rainman" and "Interview with the Vampire" and finally this movie. He is one of the industry's leading actors now. And Nicole Kidman. She has contributed much to the movie. As a result, the couple were wonderful.
Stanley Kubrick has taken a sharp look in husband-wife relations. I couldn't help myself evaluating my own ideas on this subject. Since all art masterpieces have the same effect on us to awaken our ideas and discussions, "Eyes Wide Shut" should easily be regarded as one of the best.
On the other side, the atmosphere was great. You can't even guess what was coming in the next scene or keep yourself out of the thrilling mood of dark NY streets. The scenes that were taking place in the "orgy palace" were so well-designed that I nearly believed that I was watching a different movie than the one up to those scenes.
I think Kubrick has made a very straightforward movie on human feelings about sex. It is rather complex and still so clear. Many ideas and different movie techniques come perfectly together in a single film so smoothly. This is the talent of the director and how sad that we can't expect new additions to his career. Such skill comes so rare and we should keep on experimenting the art pieces that have remained of them.
