Exploration of why romance fails
25 November 2023
Romance, both sides seek it, but often there are very different ideas about what that means.

The movie explores pitfalls of idealisation of the other person, placing looks above genuine connection and feelings as well as double standards and jumping to conclusions without trying to deeply understand another person.

It is also accurately portrayed how people read more into text messages than the sender intends both positively and other times negatively perceiving a neutral or opposite intent, or just making it wildly colourful.

Although the characters are somewhat stereotypical and extreme the situations are not far from everyday life, so they are relatable.

We are given a relatively good background on why Margot is seeking an older partner and why she goas along with uncomfortable situations.

The movie is primarily told from the female perspective, but it balances it with some insights into quirky male motives and true intentions.

I (as a male) did not feel that the feminist agenda was pushed too far, the reviews which claim that this is a movie just to blame males is highly inaccurate.

There is a glimpse into a therapy session and obviously both characters struggle with deep unresolved mental health issues, which ultimately helps to fuel the escalation of violence.

Overall its an enjoyable movie and I did not find it too predictable and I certainly did not expect it to answer all the questions it posed. I also did not expect to side with one character or the other like another review says, you do not always have to take sides.

There are some metaphors in the movie and some of the scenes are just portrays of imagination which could have been connected a bit more smoothly.

It would have been nice to add a more neutral external perspective like the therapy session on top of the two extreme sides with the occasional grounding (though biased) view of the friend.

It would have also helped to better understand the male character by providing a similar family background story to the female character.

This show would be at least a point higher if ...

Warning: Spoilers
... they would not say "the calling" and "we have to solve it" every two minutes.

Overall pretty average to be honest, it looses its charm after the first 5 episodes or so, the clues often do not add up to the solution and it feels like same same but different from episode to episode. There are very similar ideas in Blindspot (2015) and The Blacklist (2013), the later is much better thought out and has more enjoyable character development.

Judge Dredd has more compelling plot than Oblivion
21 April 2013
If you are in for the special effects you wont be disappointed, but that is all you will get. Otherwise underdeveloped plot with loads of holes, not good enough action. In fact its very slow paced, the 2 hours is really stretched out and even all this time spent you will have questions unanswered.

There are a bunch of conflicts between the level of development in technology presented in some areas, while others are behind our current level of tech.

Loads of clichés like the super hero hits the Achilles heel with its silver bullet, but other characters can load a full magazine into the enemy without causing a scratch.

Overrated

Not entertaining ... not educating ... not ... whats the point?

as per wikipedia "Jarmusch has been characterized as a minimalist filmmaker, and his idiosyncratic films unhurried. His films often eschew traditional narrative structure, lacking clear plot progression and focusing more on mood and character development" I think if you want to focus on character development, you need to introduce your character. Half an hour in the movie, I knew not more and less about the main character than at the end of the movie ...

Unhurried ... I would say dragged out, the story could be told in much less there are heaps of pointless scenes, which might illustrate the mood, but its very depressing anyway, I do not feel that there is much change throughout the movie. Im not against out of the ordinary non Hollywood films, but ...

Have to admit there are funny bits, but there is more sadness in the film than comic joy.

Still do not understand how so many people rated and praised this movie extremely high. I read the reviews/comments and I have to disagree watching the mimics on Bill Murray's face kind of slow motion style for over an hour is not fascinating ... watch Lost in Translation instead its similarly slow paced with him but it has much more to tell

Worst Overrated film I have seen in a long time
1 August 2009
Weak plot, no character development, seriously dumb dialogs. The male main character is a shame for all men and as previously mentioned its a humiliation of the Japanese: he shows weakness so many times it is very annoying, (spoiler alert) even in the "sex scene" I felt he is being raped by the female character. I did not even get how these two developed any chemistry over extremely silly conversations, the intellectual level was like listening to 4 year old not adults. The only value in the film is some nice scenic shots, however it dragged out the movie which made it even more boring. The closing scene is completely illogical. I do not get how could this receive so many Australian awards ( I live in Australia for the last 3 years) it is not even a good film on the Australian scene, watch Candy if you would like to see a good OZ movie, but this is outrageously horrible, I wish I could vote 0 to drop the current rating even more.
