Requiem for a Heavyweight (1962)
One of the best
Requiem and Rocky and Raging Bull rank at the top of boxing films. Gleason, Rooney, Harris and Quinn, as Mountain Rivera are all exceptional. One of Quinns' greatest line in film is, "The only music I know is the Star Spangled Banner. They play that at the start of the main fight". Madame Spivy (Ma), is great in small role, but brings gruesome feelings along with her. Lots of former fighters in this one, especially in neighborhood bar. Film especially good in black and white.
Edge of the City (1957)
Brings back old times
Back in 1957, I was 21 at the time, and working in a similar enviorment, with trucks in front for loading and unloading, and freight cars in rear also. All that seemed right on. Yes, some guys/bosses can be nasty. Plus I also had a good buddy who was a driver/laborer. He also was black. I'm white. One of the best friends I ever had. We got along the same way as Poitier/Cassavetes.
Peyton Place (1957)
Good soap opera
Was stationed in Washington, DC, on a saturday night and seperated from some of my buddies, passed a theater playing this feature. Went in, and enjoyed it, but not overpowered. A look at small town, New England state of ficticious Peyton Place. In bus leaving scene with Diane Varsi, notice drug store in background denoting town of Camden. Situated in Maine, a beautiful country. Story, at that time was considered pushing the codes. Great performances by Turner, Tamblyn, Nolan, and even Leon Ames. Watched it again last night. I give it an 8 out of 10. Excellent performance by Arthur Kennedy, one of my favorites.....
Arsenic and Old Lace (1944)
a childhood comedy
I was 12 years old when I saw this at my favorite neighborhood theatre. I remember the funny scenes, but
didn't understand some of the dialogue till a few years later, and then realized what a truly funny comedy. Grant, Massey, Lorre, Hull, Carson..what a cast. And brother "Teddy", chargin up the stairs and down to the cellar to "Panama". And Massey who gets mad at a resemblance to Boris Karloff. A classic comedy that never dulls. If any day you don't feel good, pop this one in.....
