Seven Brides for Seven Brothers (1954)
i only wish that it could have continued on forever
i love this musical, i have ever since i was 16 yrs old and now i'm 22 going onto 23. i would have loved this musical to continue on forever. its lovely. i love the brothers i love the brides. i think Jane Powell, Howard keel, Russ & tommy were great. its all singing, all comedy fun musical to watch over and over again. but one must face facts, its only one film and not a trilogy. i wish you all to enjoy it.
here is a toast to the cast: Jane, Howard, Jeff, Matt, Marc, Jacques, tommy, Russ, Julie, Miss R. Lee (yes i know your name, but the Internet Movie Database is picking it up as a mistake), Norma, Virgina, Betty and Nancy. and to Micheal Kidd for his wonderful work and for Stanley for fighting to have this musical done. i'm glad this movie got better reviews than the silly Brigadoon, which was supposed to be the hit of that year. if i was you i would have said "in your face" to MGM for not having any faith in you, but hey your not me and you seem to be a good sport. this movie is a classic so thank you for giving it to your generation, my mothers generation, my generation and in future my children's generation. to the cast, i'm sad that i never saw the majority of you in other films, i hope that where ever you are that you are well and are happy. to Jane Powell, i adore your films and to Howard may you rest in peace (hopefully). to Russ i loved you in west side story. tommy - you cracked me up in the movie and made me laugh so hard, and i've seen you in merry Andrew which was a great film too. Jacques, your were the most good-looking of the brothers (along with Tommy), if i was bold enough i would have asked if you had a son (kidding!) and the rest of the brothers who were excellent, Jeff who was great in the bedroom where all the brothers are, Matt and Marc for there dancing as well. to the beautiful brides, i love the song June bride and i think all of you were great.
great job to you all
The Girl in White (1952)
its a great film and still can be viewed and enjoyed in the year 2005
I loved this movie so much. I watched when I was 21 and now I'm 22 going on to 23 and I think this movie is great. We are in the year 2005 and I can honestly tell you that women will love this movie and not only women but men as well. The male lead in this movie has such dignity and is so respectable that he elevates the status of men, not making them out and men appear these days on film to be after a women only for there looks. He looks just like Kiefer Sutherland, and since I didn't know his name I called him the Kiefer look alike when I described the story to my sister. He is ambitious, smart just like the leading lady who is the wonderful June Allyson. I was bored one day and I turned on TCM and this movie started in black and white, and I don't like black and white films. The story of this film is great. It starts off with June "Emily" and her mother moving to a new town and her mother falls ill or is pregnant and asks her daughter to find a doctor. Emily hunts for a doctor and finds the doctors apartment, upon entering she meets a woman and inquires where the doctor is. The woman declares herself to be the doctor "Dr Marie". Emily is hesitant about sending this woman to heal her mother for she has the same prejudice that a lot had back in those days about women being doctors. Nevertheless Dr Marie attends to her mother and after he mother is better. Emily gains the utmost respect for her and the story continues on to Emily becomes Dr Maries assistant and then goes to Medical school where she is the only woman there. The story is triumphant of how she finds love with another doctor who is probably one of the best male characters I've ever seen, and how she overcomes obstacles to be a great doctor, and on top of that she is a woman doctor. Its great acting and for me who wasn't caught up in the hype of MGM stars and I don't care what happened back then, for me to fall in love with this film and relate to it is great personally. So I recommend you all to watch it. Don't be turned off by the fact that it is black and white like I was initially and let yourself be inspired.
Dead Poets Society (1989)
"Seize the day lads, make you lives extraordinary"
This movie is beautiful. Robin Williams has that charm that I remember from my own English teacher. The truth is teachers have an impact on how you grow up, whether you dislike them or not. The way he portrayed this character was perfect. That's the word for it, perfect. His character reminded me vividly of Professor Lupin from the Harry Potter books. I think J.K. Rowling must have based Lupin on him.
The young men who play the teenage boys were great. All had there own defining character, which made them individuals. And I think for that reason, there individuality and the way they were all close is another reason this movie is wonderful to watch.
Ethan Hawke was great, no other word for it. His class mates were great. Its a funny and charming movie that you will watch over and over again.
The Matrix (1999)
There is a reason this movie has become a modern day classic
The matrix is a stunning visual display of effects so unique that they are being used in advertisements, games and even in televisions series. But this movie offcourse has more to offer than just special effects. A movie cannot survive on that alone. There are great martial arts sequences that all the actors do, a great sense of style that the matrix has begun.
Carrie-Anne Moss in my opinion steals the show in this movie. She has this silent aggression and strength yet still being a woman. There are very few ladies who can act greatly in fantasy movies. She is right up there with the ladies from the lord of the rings trilogy.
Of course the rest of the cast were wonderful. I love Hugo Weaving! What a ledged he is. He is wonderful in the lord of the rings trilogy and he is FANSTASIC in this movie. He definitely has become one of my favourite actors. I was so sad when the crew dies. I wanted to punch cipher.
I thought to post my thoughts on the movie before the second and third come out this year. In Australia we have a month before number two comes out.
The only thing that I did not like about this movie was the word Zion'. That is pure propaganda in my opinion. Are they trying to advertise Zionism? I am very disgusted at that. Offcourse one must really look into the movie, and I admit I am very observant when I watch movies. If number two becomes a racist movie towards certain groups [I shall not name names at this point, though I will if my theory is confirmed], I should be very much peeved.
The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (2002)
the trilogy continues on and does let you down
The way it started was very effective in my opinion. To have the scene of where Gandalf the Grey falls in Kazad Dum and the words he says to the Balrog gets louder and louder while we are looking at the mountains, and then becomes the loudest when we are in Kazad Dum. Then we actually see Gandalf fall, and bam! We are with Frodo and he has had a dream about how Gandalf fell. That was done beautifully.
Regarding the two hobbits, I think it was done effectively how we see that they cannot go to Mordor without Gollum. The scenes we Gollum were excellent! I loved it how we would see the two sides of Gollum, and how we would converse with his two selves. The defeat of 'bad Gollum' and the return of 'bad Gollum' in the movie was excellent.
Back to the three companions, Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli and them running after the Orcs who have taken Pippin and Merry. Gimli stole the show most of the time. I adored him so much, more than part one in this movie. I loved how the men of Rohan stop them and Eomer says to Gimli what is you name and he says tell me yours first, then Eomer goes I will have you killed or something along those lines, and our favourite elf goes `you will die before you axe falls', I was cheering. I loved that part in the book and I am so glad it was in the movie.
The actor Karl Urban, who played Eomer nailed his character. I kept on thinking to myself when he had left the Kingdom of Rohan, we will see him, we will see him, but we only see him at the end with Gandalf. And that part I was going to jump and scream `YAHOO!' He gave his character so much life, integrity, strength and charm that I like the character of Eomer even more than I did before. I was a bit disappointed not to have seen more of Eomer, but I guess in number three we will see more of him. The woman who plays lady Ewoyn was good, and I liked her.
Okay king Theoden, he was good, but not the way I imagined. The way he came back to life after Gandalf drove Saruman out of him, and then we see Saruman fall back was good.
Now for the best part, the battle for helms deep. I was gripping my hands to my seats, then I'd be covering my mouth in terror and then I would be clapping when they'd have a minor victory. I loved how Legolas used the shield armour and did that surf boarding movement and shoot with his arrow at the orcs. I could not help it, I went `yeah!' and then I clapped, the whole cinema soon followed my lead. Gimli was so great in the battle of helms deep. He was the comic relief, also a tough warrior. Every scene that our dwarf was in, made the scene that much better.
Did anyone think there was a bit too much Aragorn in this film? Why so much kissing with him and Arwen?
Hugo Weaving is one of the best actors of our time. He is Lord Elrond. I really loved the scene with Galadrial and how she is talking to Elrond and she is telling him of the battle that men are facing, and how the Elves are leaving and we hear her speak while the men are getting ready for war. The parts of when galadrial, sam would be talking to another character and the scenes would be on where the different people were, was good in the sense that it kept on reassuring the audience that all, no mater where they were and who they were with were going through the same thing and kept the story moving along.
When the Elves go to fight alongside the men [I was soooooo happy, I was clapping again] got me all excited, I was like this is it, this is what the movie has been building for. Again I will say the battle of helms deep was done to perfection. It was like I was there and I was going to fight, I felt the terror and the excitement all at once. I was upset when Halder died. I was shocked and heartbroken.
The ents! I really liked them. Merry and Pippin again fulfilled their roles beautiful. The ents scenes were a treat to watch. The battle of Isengard was great with the ents. Faramir was more sinister in this film, but very courage's at the end. I can't wait to see the scenes with Faramir and his father, because as we now know he has forfeited his life to let the hobbits go.
Now know that all who have read the books say that the ending was cut out, with Sheolob, Pippin finding the ball, Gandalf knocking on the door and so on. Yet remember folks that out of all three books, the third one is the shortest and the end parts are made of appendices entirely. I thought the ending with Gollum leaving everyone in suspicion of this 'she' that he is taking them too was good.
I stayed up last night thinking, I loved the two towers, so why is there some people who did not, and came up with these theories of why people may have been disappointed in this film, and preferred number one more.
1. The fellowship broke. I know you would all think, duh that's what happened in number one, but I think people did not understand what it would do in number two. They were all in different areas, meeting different characters battling different things. So the audience had to concentrate on the different scenes and what people were doing. 2. The movie suffers from being the middle of the trilogy. My sister said that she needed closure. People may be sitting there going, we started with frodo going to mordor, and he is still going to mordor. 3. New characters to take in 4. it was less emotional than number.
The Count of Monte Cristo (2002)
awsome movie, first rate action movie
What a movie! There must be something about a great story line, excellent acting and fast action sword fighting scenes that spark up an interest in me. Not since watching `The fellowship of the ring' have I been so excited about a movie. The handsome, sexy young man who plays the count of Monte Cristo, James Caviezel, deserves big round of applause. When he starts an innocent young man who is naive about people intentions, a man in love with a beautiful girl named Mercedes Mercedes, I kept on digging my hands in my ears to make sure that was her name, not until I put the subtitles on did I believe her name was Mercedes], to a man going crazy in a prison, to a man wanting revenge and transforming into the most attractive, self-assured smart-looking, smart-acting rich man. I fell in love with him. This is not to say this is a chicks flick, I know you men will love this film. My brothers [who are the hardest people in the world to please] loved the film. He was wonderful!
I have never hated the villains in a film so much. I thought that after Jason Isaacs in `The Patriot' I would never find a villain that I would despise so much. I am a friendly peace keeping person, and in this film I was saying out-loud [I watched this at home, so I did not annoy anyone in the cinema, only my family had to put up with me] squeeze him, drown him [when he was killing the prison warden, Micheal Wincott], to chock him to death [to the ship villain], to may you rot in hell [when he sends James Frain to prison], and punch him! Kill him! Stick the knife in his belly! When he was fighting Guy Pearce.
The beautiful lady who played Mercedes was so loveable, not overacting, was true to her role, she actually made me shed tears, not like Catherine Zeta-Jones in `The mask of Zorro', who does not know how to act even if she took classes from now until dooms day. The one thing that I despise in movies is those of people who are stars, and have celebrity status but don't do acting, and it seems that the reason they only are in movies is to be known. This movie I did not get that impression.
The story was great. Usually movies derived from books are. If you want a good night in watch it, if you wish to have a good movie to watch with you family without any nasty scenes watch it, if you want to impress both sexes watch it. This movie is so worth getting. Oh yeah, I've recently got the extended edition of the fellowship of the ring, so go get that as well because its excellent.
Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (2002)
better than the first, they are fitting into there roles
I have so much to say. I just saw the movie three hours ago so it's still fresh in my mind.
Okay first up the actor who portrays Harry. In the first movie I did not like him that much, and in my opinion he has improved so much from number one. The resemblance between him and the actual Harry potter [fictional character, the one I see in my mind when I read the books] is uncanny.
Ron- number one I loved him. Actually he was my favourite of the kids, I thought he was adorable. Number two, he acts too scared, seems to be Harry's right hand man, listening to what he says. In the books he is funnier and much feistier. I still thought he was good, in number three i'm sure he will be better. He was soo funny though. i loved how he was the comic relief in the film
hermoine- we did not see much of her [compared to the others], so she did not annoy me. she seemed more serious and seemed to have a bit of an ego in the film, but that's not to say she wasn't good. she was better in this film by far, then again there was not that much of her so I haven't got that much to go on. she seemed to be more dramatic, and more emotional in this film. There are some parts that did annoy me, like in Diagon Ally she comes out of the shop, waits for half an hour runs to harry & hagrid waits another half hour then starts talking. and god forbid this, but are they trying to make hermione out to be sexier?
the other children. all of them seemed more solemn, there was less laughter less smiles, and it seemed to me there was more egotism in the air. it seemed that everyone tried to act more serious and more dramatic than the others that the movie did not have that much of a comedic feel to it. draco in number one was sooooo much better than he is in number two. Oliver wood, we did not see that much of him so I could not judge on him that much.
the young girl who plays guinny was wonderful. the snippets they had of her when tom was talking of how she opened the chamber, flushed the book down the toilet and so on, she was wonderful. her facial expressions were great.
the adults again are a different story. we did not see snape in potions, so again we were deprived of the hatred between Harry and him. I still like mognagal in this film. dumbledoor I thought was wonderful in number one, but this movie he has changed. even hagrid seemed less funnier.
the movie in general lacked consistency. what I mean by that it would jump from one scene to another. it seemed a bit distorted to me.
and what the hell was with the ending. hermoine running to Harry. and then shaking Ron's hands. why? and then the corny mushy scene when hagrid comes, and he tells the three kids that he is very thankful towards them, and then everyone claps.
i loved the part when harry spoke parseltounge, that was so well done. it was one of the highlights. the part when he stabs the snake jaw into the book and the ink spills everywhere was well done.
Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones (2002)
if it wasn't for natalie portman, this movie would have been perfect
what a harsh one line summary! ... but that's the way i feel. This movie was excellent, and when she [Natalie] is on the screen, i cringe.
this movie was as if all the mistakes that George Lucas made in part one [which i liked], he fixed them up in part two, sprucing it up with action, great special effects that grips you from the beginning to the end. The story line of course gets better, and we see more of how the dark side is winning over the good side. The best part for me was the fight between Yoda and Dukoo [have to laugh at the names]
Ewan was so wonderful in this movie, he continued on from part one, acting the same character but older giving him more wisdom and knowledge, that we see how obi wan becomes a great mentor for Luke.
The reason I did not like Natalie, is not like Carrie Ann Moss from the Matrix or Liv Tyler from Lord Of The rings who project a sense of power and radiance onto the screen, you don't see them acting' you believe that they are Trinity and Arwen. Natalie only spoke her lines, not giving much emotions just walking around trying to be pretty and smart. You don't see why she is so special, why Anakin falls in love with her, all you see is skin and a girl talking her lines. Nothing special. Ewan on the other hand was Obi Wan, not Ewan Megregor.
It was a good movie, despite Natalies inability to act.
The Sum of All Fears (2002)
Racist, propagandist ... typical American film
We are again told that if your an American, and an Israeli your a good person, while if your and Arab your stupid, greedy and heartless, and if your Russian you are bomb-happy and care nothing for the lives of others.
The movie is another propagandist film that again tells us how brave the Israelis and Americans are and how bad and naughty the Arabs and Russians are.
I went out of the film thinking how many times do the American's need to reinforce in our minds on how bad Arabs are. It was an unthoughtful, uncaring, propagandist film that runs the same way as `Behind Enemy Lines', `Black Hawk Down' and all those American movies were the Muslims, Russians, Germans are the bad guys and the Americans are the one trying to keep peace.
The film starts of with them saying how the Syrians launched a surprise attack on the Israelis, and how they bravely decided to retaliate with one bomb. The plane goes down and crashes into the sand. The movie then shows a couple of Egyptians finding the bomb, and deciding to sell it, because as we are shown Arabs are greedy for money and have no sense to report the bomb to the government. They send it to be sold, and the person buying it knows its worth, but sells it for less. He tells the man that he will give him four hundred dollars for the loss of his son, who died between the 1972, and guess what the man smiles at him. So again, Arabs are heartless as they will be happy to accept four hundred dollars for the loss of ones son.
While the good, innocent guys are trying to maintain peace, by going to Russia and telling the president that there concern is for peace, never knowing that a bomb has been sent to their country.
These films are so predictable, it's not funny. I am sure more will come out, from the result of September 11th on how bad Muslims are.
Ice Age (2002)
for everyone!
i went out of the cinema theater as some like to call it] very happy with the movie.
its funny, touching, sweet, and all those lovely wonderful things that are missing in our films these days. and i must add it is sooooooooooooooooooooooooo much better than shrek. you must see it
it has become one of my favorites, right up with the lord of the rings and the matrix.
so go out and see it. its worth it. i am an aunt of a 20 month year old baby, and when watching this movie she was the age when babies love to touch your face and copy the movements you make. the movie will touch you so deep on the inside, the way it did with me, if you ever have loved a baby. when you watch this movie, you'll understand what i am talking of
turbo engine
Black Hawk Down (2001)
A good laugh afterwards
When I went to see this movie I thought `great! Josh, Ewan two of my favourites' when I went out I was thinking `WHAT WAS THE POINT!'
I have previously said that I would not comment on movies I thought were bad because I think they are a waste of time. I have now changed my opinion. I do not want you all to suffer and pay to watch a ridiculously stupid movie.
Okay it starts of good. Then it gets pathetic.
For one thing there are so many characters, you do not connect with any of them. One character calls his wife/girlfriend. We don't know who he is, what he want's with this woman, and how it has any importance in the movie. Another guy says he cannot go back in and another soldier tells him a speech of how everyone is in the same boat as he is and there scared. Then they look at each other and nod. I'm sitting in the cinema thinking `What? Did I miss something?'
What the hell was Ewan McGregor role. He did the movie Moulin Rouge, then he want's to do a masculine movie. So he goes into this movie, and all he does is make coffee. HELLO?!
There is this scene were a soldier sees a hand of a man with a watch. The solder picks it up and puts it in his pocket. I'm sitting there thinking, `What is he going to do with it?' keep it as a souvenir? Give it to the man's wife? The poor lady would freak.
Another stupid thing is that they would get the bodies of dead soldiers, and put them in the truck/trailers
whatever they are called, and the living people would be in danger by running outside.
There is this guy that gets captured and he is in the prison. In the movie we do not see if he is rescued or if any think of him. He just gets captured and that's it. WHAT THE HELL!!!
The sad scenes are so predicable. I was laughing during those scenes.
I left the movie thinking if that was based on a true story....
God this movie really was stupid.
The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001)
Hoping not to sound repetitive, I enjoyed the movie immensely
Before you read my comment, you are to know that I have not read others comments so far. I do not need to read them. If indeed you still have not seen to movie so far [and I am assuming that's a small minority of people], then you shall hear my opinion on the movie.
Having read the books previously, I of course had a set image in my mind of what the movie should contain. When I went to go and see it, I was astounded of how Peter Jackson adapted the most-loved novel of all time, to the best film I have ever seen.
The actors of the film, all of them were so wonderful. Elijah Wood as Frodo Baggins, did a superb job. To me, he portrayed Frodo better than anyone I could have imagined. And as a female, I also admired his good-looks during the film That is not to say he is a pretty boy who does not know how to act. Quite the opposite actually, he is a pretty boy who knows how to act. Plus, my brother who saw it with me, said he was great. So there. The remaining Hobbits, Dominic Monaghan [as Merry], Sean Astin [as Sam], Billy Boyd [as Pippin] were also fantastic.
The two lead women in the film, Liv Tyler [as Arwen] and Cate Blanchett [as Galadriel] were wonderful in there unique ways. In the book, Arwen is only mentioned at the meeting in the house of Elrod. It was wonderful to see a tough female character in the film. It was as if, during the short time onscreen Liv Tyler had in the film, she put all her effort into her character. And you see it. You love her character. Indeed Liv Tyler takes your breath away in the film Cate Blanchett who has been a favorite of mine for a long time, portrayed the character of Galadriel marvelously. She was great as Galadriel.
The remaining hero's of the fellowship, Sean Bean [as Boromir], Orlando Bloom [as Legolas], Ian McKellen [as Gandalf], Viggo Mortensen [as Aragorn] and John Rhys-Davis [as Gimli], and I am sounding repetitive, but they were great. I do have a favorite among all those, and that is Orlando Bloom. He was wonderful as Legolas.
Another favorite of mine Hugo Weaving [as Elrond], moved me also in the short time he had on screen. My favorite is when he is at the fire of Mount Doom or Mordor, and he is asking the human to throw the ring in. You must go and see it, to know what I am speaking of.
Peter Jackson, must get at least an Oscar for the fabulous job. The effects, the everything [?} that he did in the film, was great. Truly he is a genius, a genius that has done a wonderful adaptation of a book I love reading.
Thank you.
Pearl Harbor (2001)
i hope you enjoyed this movie as much as i did
This movie was wonderful.
Personally, I don't comment on movies that I think are awful, because I feel that they are a waste of time. I only comment on movie that I truly feel are worth seeing. When I went into the cinema I knew I was in for a good movie. The commercials/trailers I saw were great so I was excited in seeing this movie.
The action scenes were GREAT/EXCELLENT/OUTSTANDING there are not enough words to describe them. They had me at the edge of my seats, holding on to the sides of my seat in a tense position. I could not cry only when the credits came up because of how intense the action scenes were. I must admit I fell in love with Josh Hartnett. Maybe it was his voice/accent or maybe because he is just such a babe. He acted so well in this movie. So did Ben Affleck. Kate Benckinsale, who to be quite honest, I've never heard of her in my life was good. And the story line was beautiful.
You can also go and take younger kids to see this. There are no senes that are horrible. Even the love scene between Kate and Josh is not bad. There are no naked bodies in this movie. So there is another good point that I will add to this movie.
Stepmom (1998)
lovely and a tear jerker
This movie is for all people. The name Stepmom makes it out to be a boring movie, and it isn't. The script by itself is good, and the cast made the movie even better. Julia Roberts as always is wonderful. Susan Sarandon made you sympathise with her characters situation.
I must really rave about the young actor Jena Malone who I've never seen before. She was great. Most of the tears in the movie came from her. The young boy Liam Aiken got quite a bit of laughs.
It's just a lovely movie, with no nasty scenes in it.
The Patriot (2000)
To me this movie was excellent
Whoa! There is some tension of the historical accuracy of this film. God knows when I go to see a movie I don't go to have a history lesson. When I go to see a movie it is to see great acting, story line great cinematography, and this movie had all three.
Mel Gibson was brilliant in this movie [as if that surprises anyone]. If you want to know why Mel is one of the best actors around, this movie will show you. Heath Ledger was so great in this movie. I loved him. What about the kids! They were exceptional. The rest of the cast was fine. The bad guy made you hate him so much, I felt like jumping into the screen and slapping him around.
The story line and I don't care what anyone says was great. And the cinematography was great.
So all in all it was a worthwhile movie to go and watch.
Go see it, I recommend it strongly.
Pride and Prejudice (1995)
The greatest adaptation of a novel ever!!!
This is the best adaptation of a novel ever. Jane Austen herself would have been proud of it.
The screenplay, the clothes worn by the actors, the setting of the movie was so truthful to the novel, it really took me by surprise.
The actors themselves were fabulous. Ehle and Firth were marvellous. Mr Collins, Lydia, Mrs Bennet, Mr Bennet, Mr Bingley, Jane, Miss Bingly, Lady Catherine DeBough, Mr Wickham, Charlotte Lucas were all great. They played their characters so well, so that now when I read the book I see them in my mind.
I have watched this movie several times, I have now worn out my tape. It is so good, I never get tired of it.
I am glad all of you enjoyed it, and I believe more people still are going to enjoy it. This movie is going to stay around forever.
