My Old Lady (2014)
Poignant and funny
The whole film is shot in Paris and many of the scenes are simply drippingly gorgeous. It is a very charming movie, with some heavy undertones and one I will watch again. There's a good message in it. Loved Dominique Pinon as the real estate agent. Kristin Scott Thomas is so good, mixing up mean and nasty with tenderness and self-awareness. Maggie is a stitch and just superb! Kevin excellently portrays a man who is down and out, carrying around emotional baggage. Stéphane Freiss always seems to play a neurotic Frenchman, but he does frenzied well. Many times I laughed out loud in this movie! I've studied French my whole life, but learned a new word in this movie: viager. I am surprised critics have come down so hard on it. But, I am almost as old as Kevin Kline, I adore Paris, I love movies where you can laugh and still be brought to tears and ones that have a good message.
La grande vadrouille (1966)
Timeless Comedy
I have been teaching French for more than 20 years and saw this comedy with my 18 year old nephew who is studying French and my sister who knows none. We laughed our silly heads off for two hours. It appeals to young and old, French-speaking and non-French speaking. It is simply hilarious.
Fools Rush In (1997)
Charming, adorable movie about culture clashes
One of my beginning Spanish students brought this film in that I'd never heard of and my classes and I really loved it. I have since seen and enjoyed FOOLS RUSH IN many, many times which makes it a classic. The scenery is fabulous, the culture clashes hilarious, it's got a good strong, moral message and the Spanish throughout (with subtitles) is delightful. You won't be disappointed. ¡Buenísimo!
Scrooged (1988)
Updated Timeless Classic
I will rarely rarely watch a movie more than once, but this one is a favorite Christmas classic of our family. It is so in tune to our crazy hustle-bustle, cram-it-all-in, live-for-the-moment, me-first culture. And Bill Murray is so wonderful in this role.
The Milagro Beanfield War (1988)
Surprisingly Good
I was pleasantly surprised by this movie, having enjoyed it immensely. I can't understand at all why they rated it an R. R because people are standing up for what they believe in? R because they weave in a little religion/spirituality? In Milagro you are entertained and it sends a good message about humanity. Great discussion film. Rent it.
The Tango Lesson (1997)
Marvelous portrayal of the tango dance itself
If you watch this movie for nothing else then to view beautiful tango dancing accompanied by fabulous music... please do so. Very charming, unique and refreshing. 12 lessons on two different levels. Kudos to Sally Potter who wrote, directed, starred and sang in it!
