Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith (2005)
Same Star Wars galaxy but not the same quality
As a big Star Wars fan since it's inception in the late 70s, I was very disappointed by the first half. From the start,I was lost in the vast Star Wars galaxy, being overwhelmed by the incredible graphics but very slim plot. The special effects were out of this world for sure but they grabbed my attention more than the plot did. What was the plot for the first half? I gave the film five out of ten because of the lucid plot. However, on the positive side, the film picked up quit a bit as it progressed and comes to an appropriate end. I was pleased with the obvious plot in the second half and was not in the dark regarding the sinister plans of Darth Sidious. The contrast between the good and the bad was obvious and so kept my attention. I walked away though with a big question in my mind as to why did Lucas involve the volcano planet? I know that it gives meaning as to what happens to one of the key characters in the film but aside from that why such a backdrop? Too much of this film came across to me as contrived and not as fluid as the originals and the previous two installments.
In all honesty, Episode I and II were much better than this one. Too much going on and too complex.
Office Space (1999)
Hmmm...let's see...I don't have enough room on the bottom of my DVD rack so...
In all honesty, if you'd like to see this movie, I'm not stopping you. But if a no plot movie, bad editing, vulgarity and poor taste is what you're looking for...see this movie. The film lacks drive, momentum and plot. I will admit that I do like the obvious humor about work but a lot of the time it's in very poor taste and lacks refinement. Making fun of a handicap-able guy in my book SUCKS! They've got enough stuff to work through let alone this. Just my humble opinion here. The screen time that was given to putting down the guy was way over the top for me and again, lacked good taste.
All in all, one of the worst if not the worst films that I have ever seen. NOT A FILM FOR THE FAMILY!
Copper Mountain (1983)
Cop-out Mountain
First off, this is NOT a recommendation. If you're a big and I mean BIG Jim Carrey fan (like me) then I'd say get this admixture of cut and paste movie making.
I was all hyped up to see this movie but when I actually saw it, what a letdown! But I did really like Jim's short moments as he impersonated different celebrities. Otherwise, I thought that I was witnessing a rough (and I do mean rough) new budding director's talents.
Overall, do not expect acting but rather a focus on Club Med, solo artists, and a great interpretation of Sammy Davis Jr. by Jim. But by all means, if you're a BIG Jim Carrey fan, get this first film with Jim in his first starring role.
The Passion of the Christ (2004)
A supernatural something
I finally was able to see this film. You might say that I had a passion to see this film. Why? Because I like seeing gore? No. Because I like seeing suffering and brutality? No. Because I like seeing religious films? No. I saw this film because I have a passion for seeing good overcoming evil, truth triumphing over lies, hope triumphing out of absolute darkness and despair. But my passion is nowhere near to that of the passion of the main character! Not even close! All throughout, I was keenly aware of a supernatural something, a deep down inside sense that I was witnessing what everyone hopes for dreams of, longs for. Something that today we call solid love, a supernatural something that helps us to make it from day to day, year to year and in the middle of our problems we can reach out and share this Man's passion.
If you're looking to criticize this film for its acting, sets, costumes, or directing I'm sure that you'll find a flaw here and there because it isn't perfect but what hits the mark and what matters to me is the correct portrayal of an historic figure and what He endured so that our lives can still be touched today.
In my book, a must see film. Don't bring the kids or little ones, there's plenty of graphic scenes, but do see the film and experience this Man's passion.
Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace (1999)
You can't judge a film by it's first showing!
I'm a big Star Wars fan. That aside, I must say that the first time I saw Episode 1, I was disappointed. But then something happened. I had to see it again and again and again. I recently got both the Widescreen and Pan and Scan editions on vhs and I must say that I now see this film as EXCELLENT! I am not hesitant to give it nine stars out of ten!!!
The casting was excellent. I especially liked the actress that portrayed Anakin's mom. Excellent acting and non-verbal acting. The music was superb...another great score by John Williams. The special effects were literally out of this world. And Jar Jar ...was loveable!
This is the kind of movie that you just can not fully appreciate after only one viewing. I've seen it now seven and I still see more new stuff every time that I see it.
If you are looking for a good family film (some of the scenes are a bit intense for younger kids)with a good deal of action, special effects and a very deeply laid plot...rent this one!
