Disturbing Behavior (1998)
bad!
The idea for this movie was quite interesting. (however not very original). The first 20 minutes were promising at least entertaining movie. But everything is going downhill after that. One of the worst scripts ever made into a movie, unnatural dialogue, bad acting and a laughable ending. Nick Stahl seems to be the only person with a bit of talent. Probably one of the worst post-scream teen thrillers. Yuck!
Final Destination (2000)
great first 30 minutes
The first 30 minutes are great. It contains a great plain crash scene, a very mysterious tension and interesting camera. After 30 minutes it is going downhill. The movie comes to close to the average teen horror area. The ending is one big cliche.
Pups (1999)
not good, not bad
Pups is a movie with both good sides and bad sides. To start with the good news: Great acting by all three major roles. Burt Reynolds does his best. Cameron van Hoy is even better. But Mischa Barton is the best of all and shows that she is very talented. Also very good: The dramatic development during the hostage. Ash seems also a very talented director. But the film is also a failure. The Burt Reynolds part is very unrealistic and badly written. But the worst part of Pups is the extremely simple moral views. The writer/director is telling us "look what happens if parents are away all the time and the media is showing violent movies". This simplistic view is a missed chance. Pups could have been much better.
Taxi Driver (1976)
classic
Probably one of the best movies ever. Great acting, fantastic direction. And it has something to say t too. The script is amazing. There aren't many films with so much emotional depht. The dialogue is great too. I never ever saw a movie with music matching that good with the rest of the film. The music is urban and sounds like the night.
Nobody involved in this film ever did something this good again. This movie is an experience, i'll never forget
Gummo (1997)
fantastic film, future classic
Hitchcocks psycho got very bad reviews. Now it is considered a classic. I believe the same will happen to GUMMO. In my opinion this film is ahead of it's time. It is a surreal experience about the beauty of the ugly and the evil inside people. Especially the bunny boy scenes are brilliant. This film challenges you. It confuses you. There is no story, there are emotions and there is a brilliant director. Harmony Korine.
Titanic (1997)
after the hype
I saw this movie again recently, three years after the hype and it was brought back to normal proportions. The special effects are still impressive, the idea is great and the story too. But Kate Winslet is ok, but not as good as she was in Heavenly Creatures. Dicaprio wasn't at his best either (watch Romeo and Juliet, Gilbert Grape or This boys life) and the biggest laugh of the movie was the dialogue, wich is rediculous in some scenes, hilarious in others. Looking back it was ok but not brilliant.
The English Patient (1996)
overrated
I have nothing against love stories. I have nothing against epic movies. But this has to be the single most overrated film of the nineties. The story is one big cliche. The movie is dull and boring. All the performances are one-dimensional. the film is far too long and has a sort of fake depth that I hate. The landscapes are beautiful to make the film more impressive. But it fails.
When you want a great love story, try casablanca.
What's Eating Gilbert Grape (1993)
touching....
When I saw this movie for the first time, the messages of the film where in my thoughts for days. The storyline and cinematography of the movie match perfectly. And all the performances are great (except maybe juliette lewis, who knows only one way to act). Especially Dicaprio as Arnie and the woman who plays the mother are brilliant. I've worked with mentally handicaped people and I think Dicaprio's performance is much better than for instance the overrated Dustin Hoffman in Rain Man. Lasse Halstroms direction is close to brilliant and very inspired and original. Except for Julliette Lewis: Brilliant
Simon Birch (1998)
too sentimental
The problem with this movie is that the script is far more sentimental and far less intelligent and thoughtful compared to the book and that ruins the film. Every scene is trying to touch you, but it never does. The script lacks the originality of the book. Both the direction and the acting are average. John Irving-films should be made by people with more talent.
