Looney Tunes: Back in Action (2003)
Great movie, nicely done!
I can't understand why the movie was such a commercial flop. I liked it. It was more than I expected. Bugs and Daffy were hilarious, although Steve Martin's lines were not so. Really, so much better than Space Jam!
If you get the DVD do not omit to see the Extra Features:
** SPOILER **
Instead of the actual introduction of the movie, Daffy Duck was supposed to be a superhero who was going to save the world from an evil gigantic robot, controlled by Dr. Evil.
So when the world is threatened, Super Daffy (or whatever) comes out of nowhere, while Elmer Fudd and Speedy Gonzalez who are cops are watching helpless. Using his binoculars, Elmer watches Super Daffy fly towards the evil robot and says the famous Superman line:
"Is it a BIRD? Is it a PLANE?"
So Speedy takes a look through the binoculars and says:
"No. It's a bird."
Loved it!
Troy (2004)
Epic. Why don't the Greeks like it?
I loved spending my evening watching this movie. I got my 7 euros worth. Don't know why so many Greeks like me say that we should boycott the movie, because it does not stick to the true story of Troy, as written in Homer's "The Iliad".
Really, does it even matter if someone who actually lived 3,200 years ago died a little earlier than depicted in the film (Achilles died and never entered Troy)? Or if the role of the Gods is played down? Or if there was a love interest? Or even that the war lasted 10 years and not 15 days as depicted?
Hey, no disrespect to Homer but crowds are much tougher today. They got things to do today you know. Back then, they had all the time in the world to listen to the story again and again, all 10 years of it. But this is Hollywood, come on! 160 minutes of running time is long enough already!
Really, I enjoyed it very much, it'll make a wonderful addition to my DVD collection in 6 months.
Two Weeks Notice (2002)
Exactly what you expect to see
Take Hugh Grant's charming character (as in: Bridget Jones' Diary; Mickey Blue Eyes; Notting Hill; Four weddings and a funeral) only a bit richer and fancier.
Now take Sandra Bullock's usual character traits in movies: beautiful, smart, antisocial in Miss Congeniality; stubborn in 28 Days and Murder by Numbers; a non-quiter as in The Net.
Bring them together and you have a not-so-bad movie, with clever lines, although some of them have been used before. Add a young pretty redhead (Alicia Witt) for a little extra competition and there you have it.
In all, it was just what I expected.
$windle (2002)
Better than I had hoped
** SLIGHT SPOILER **
I don't usually rent a video on a Saturday night, so when I do I really want it to be enjoyable. This one was. I got more than I expected. I'm a sucker for movies with a twist in the end, so naturally I loved this one. Clever dialogue, the script was not bad, direction was good, the story-telling speed was just right.
No complaints, I got more than I had hoped for.
Moulin Rouge! (2001)
Wow!
This movie really left me speechless. I am a keen movie-goer with my private top 20 of movies, all of which are movies have a very intricate plot. Moulin Rouge, for me, is a top movie.
It is a fantastic experience. It combines Disney Magic, Paris Glamour, a beatiful and sexy couple with stunning songs, a love story and a funny (at times) script.
Although more of a musical than a movie, this is a must see. And this is from someone who hates musicals.
Tip to guys: It's an excellent chick film. Chicks will LOOOOVE this movie!
Hannibal (2001)
Awful, just awful
The film was really a disappointment. I didn't particularly like the new Clarice Starling, she wasn't the same shy person she was in Silence of the Lambs. I guess you could say that 10 years in the FBI change a person, but nevertheless I didn't really like her. The only time she seemed to be the same person is the jogging scene.
Back to the film now. It's a perfect film to make you lose your appetite. I'm usually really okay with gory films, but what the good doctor does is really beyond gruesomeness (is there such a word?).
I won't spoil it for those of you who haven't seen it, but make yourselves a favour and see another film instead. Definitely not a good film to see on Valentine's Day (that's when the preview was released in the UK)...
