Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens (2015)
The Star Wars franchise is like a bag of green tea.
It is bland to begin with, and after having used it 6 times it has lost all flavor.
Suffice it to say, I didn't like this movie. As always, the plot is razor thin. The story has a lot of explosions (one of which of a whole planet-turned-WMD, because the earlier Death Star had of course to be surpassed --however, its destruction was remarkably similar); lots of intense gazes (am I watching Star Wars or Bold & Beautiful?); and lots of stupid stuff that should kill even the most gullible person's suspension of disbelief (two people without any piloting experience out-fly a group of trained pilots; same two people without light saber experience beat someone who was trained to use it; a janitor Stormtrooper knows exactly where to launch an attack. I could go on.) The best I can say about this movie, is that JJ Abrams managed to spend 200M to create a movie that fits the franchise. Unfortunately, that's not a compliment.
The Big Bang Theory: The Troll Manifestation (2015)
Finally! An episode that hit all the marks again...
To me, season 8 has been an incredible let down so far, but The Troll Manifestation lived up to old-fashioned expectations.
The picture used by IMDb for this episode (Bernadette in an ugly pink dress) made me fear it would be a 'gimmicky' episode in which the laughter would (or "should") be induced by cheap, silly events. I was wrong: this episode did pretty much everything right.
The episode has two main story lines: Leonard and Sheldon come up with a new theory; and Penny, Bernadette and Amy are confronted with embarrassing facts from their respective pasts. The nice thing is that both story lines are coherent, and not fragmented as so many story lines in recent episodes have been. Fragmentation in story lines make me feel that the writers have run out of ideas, and are going for easy, uninspired laughter.
Besides two solid story lines with good jokes, The Troll Manifestation had some cute details in the acting (Leonard slapping the table in excitement; Bernadette sympathetically sighing "Oh, Amelia...") . It was also nice to see that Sheldon was actually being an adult with some childish quirks, instead of some infantile jerk who seems to go out of his way to annoy people.
I hope the writers will be able to keep this up!
Ghost Whisperer (2005)
There's a lot of Jennifer Love Hewitt chasing people in this show...
or ghosts chasing Jennifer Love Hewitt... and that's the deadly minus of this show. Once you notice that more than, say, 80% of each episode is described by
- ghosts are trying to tell their story to Jennifer Love Hewitt, but get interrupted all the time by different circumstances
- Jennifer Love Hewitt tries to tell that story to living people and has to convince them of her 'gift'
then you realize that each episode is pretty much the same as the one before it, and the one after it. And that, in turn, makes you want to switch to Medium. At least that show doesn't have a woman with incredibly ugly fake eye lashes, a hair-don't from the 1980's and clothing from the 1890's.
