A nice fairy tale...
29 October 2001
In this wonderful 'slapstick' the main characters are all under the age of ten. I think their performance is very good. It has nice special effects and of course a nice story. I saw the German/French version on 'Arte' which was OK despite of the alteration of the introduction and credit titles.

Great idea, bad performance...
19 October 2001
The idea of learning the audience something of the psychological effect and thus meaning of the music and sound in a movie is great. However it has been put on stage very clumsily. Every detail is learned in advance; it is not really an interview or documentary. But it is nice to get familiar with the music composer. You are watching the movie from a different and richer perspective.

A good impression of the making of a good movie...
19 October 2001
I thought that this promotional short was pretty good. It gives a nice impression of the crew and the filming location. The warm weather and the rough location made it difficult to film. On the other hand it was paradise; almost unaffected nature. It really encourages you to see the movie.

Very funny and well executed...
18 October 2001
At first you see a man waking up by the alarm which he consequently hits. Then you see a man getting out of his bed who starts running within a strange environment and with a very peculiar hat. The climax in the end is very good and very funny. The filming and cutting is nice, as well as the colour. It is fast, funny, nobody speaks and has a very good ending. A great short!

Is slang good or bad?
28 September 2001
One of John Nesbitt's Passing Parade, this is about one of the facets of the American language: slang. Next to English the most spoken language and often considered the richest language on earth. This leads to the controversy if slang is good or bad. Many scholars studied the history of slang.

In this short it's about the history of slang. Each word has it's own story. The stories are about expressions like 'Watch your P's and Q's', 'I don't give a d...', 'He kicked the bucked', 'Pin money', 'Taking a Brodie' and 'Fink'. Very nice!

A must see...
28 September 2001
It's about a doctor who lives and works in a quiet village in Holland. One day an old friend from university (medicine) calls and visits him. They are recalling old memories and have a laugh. His friend Hans spends the night in his house. When doctor Pulder awakes he notices something strange...Hans is gone. He wants to find out what happened and he discovers something terrible but paradoxical it is also liberating. It is a great movie with brilliant acting and a very nice story.

Electrical power is the heart of the motion picture!
20 September 2001
This is a short movie about the importance of electricity, in particular for the motion picture industry. In starts with the making of the Boulder Dam and the electricity it generates. We see how this is converted suitable for normal usage. A nice detail is that there is a shot of a set from The Wizard of Oz (1939). In this set a deleted scene is recorded with Judy Garland and Ray Bolger which you can see in the documentary That's Dancing (1985).

At the end of the movie there are some trailers: Fast Company (1938), Idiot's Delight (1939), Tarzan in Exile (1939), Four Girls in White (1939), Return of the Thin Man (1939), Broadway Serenade (1939), Burn 'Em up O'Conner (1939) and Honolulu (1939).

Crime Busters (1977)

An easy to watch and funny movie.
26 August 2001
Matt Kirby and Wilbur Walsh meet each other when looking for a job in a harbor. They are both rejected in a rude way. This leads to the first slapstick action.

Because they still don't have a job they decide to go for the quick money by robbing a supermarket. In a snack-bar they meet two cops. Just for fun Matt and Wilbur tell that they want to be a cop. By mistake they run into a police station when intending to rob the supermarket. The same two cops are there and get Matt and Wilbur a job by the police. Being a cop they meet al sorts of criminals, but when they are never fighting when they are in their uniform.

The red line in the movie is a man from Shanghai. First Matt meets him in the harbor, later they run into him when being a cop. Then they accidently meet his family, and at the end they solve a case where he was part of.

It's an easy to watch and funny movie, just for a rainy sunday afternoon.

Typically Dutch...
25 August 2001
15-year-old Samantha lives with her brother Jakob (20). Their parents are divorced. The father is in a hospital because he is senile and they don't know where their mother is. Sammy and Jakob take care of themselves, largely thanks to Jakob.

Sammy is growing older and wants to experience how men are like. Her brother though is very protective and sees her as the little girl he wants her to be...

If you like drama, you will probably like this movie.

A very funny set of curiosities in America in the 1930's.
12 August 2001
A very funny set of curiosities in America. You see the smallest cow, a living portrait of Abraham Lincoln on a horse, a man who flew around the earth in half an hour (circling around the north pole), Columbia as the capitol of America (not Washington), the White House which is made of brown bricks, the Capitol which was mortgaged to a dutchman then 101 years ago and the smallest city in America on record (1 person with his dog) (also see the Plot Summary). The setting is in an airplain flying over America.

This is a very nice piece of history!
14 July 2001
This short movie, which I saw at Turner Classic Movies (TCM), is a very nice piece of history! It shows something of all times...People don't accept anything new. They have to get used to it and that takes time. The public opinion will change if you work hard enough and believe in yourself an the things you stand for (in this movie the jazz).
