Greenlit (2010)
Greening Hollywood
In an ever-present debate regarding the impact humans have on the environment; 'Greenlit' puts the previously overlooked film industry under an eco-friendly microscope. Director Miranda Bailey sets forth on a journey to turn a film production into a green, environmentally friendly operation, attempting to answer the question of what it means to be "green" on a film set and if it a feasible goal for Hollywood to trade in the old ways for the new. Bailey is a quirky, entertaining host who guides the documentary through a crew who is less-than-enthusiastic about the additional steps it requires to stay environmentally friendly in the eyes of the eco-warrior Lauren Selman, the sets environmental consultant. Facing internal sabotage and self-doubt, Selman and Bailey make a valiant effort to create a more aware crew and confront the looming low-budget woes which cause film crews to disregard their environment impact. The documentary sheds light on an issue previously not discussed and uses interviews with cast, crew and members of the community to illustrate an inconvenient truth; it's not easy being green. The film is thoughtful, unique and a must-see for any filmmakers attempting to minimize their carbon footprint.
Hindsight (2008)
Clever Thriller
The movie starts off with the ending like so many Indies these days. Dina (Miranda Bailey) is hitch hiking across a deserted highway and then picked up by a driver (Richard Riehle) to whom she tells the story of how she ended up on that road, that day. She starts with her boyfriend Ron (Waylon Payne). Where we zip to a scene where Dina and Ron are having wild sex in a shabby motel. They speed off leaving no pay for the hotel owner and stealing the room's TV then speed down the road where we see they are living out of their car. Soon enough they find out that Dina has gotten knocked up and they have no way of raising a child. Then we meet Maria (Leonor Varela) and Paul (Jeffery Donavan). A rich yuppie couple living in an up and coming gated community where they live in the model home. Dina and Ron show up 8 months later pregnant. They have made a deal with the rich couple to "adopt" or sell their unborn baby. However, during the visit, where they play an extended game of Pictionary we see that neither couple is who they say they are. Thrills ensue. Paul gets beaten up, Ron gets stabbed, Dina gets locked in a closet, and Maria wants the baby. She will do anything for the baby, even if it means betraying her husband. The film goes from the story to the car ride where Dina tells her story, so one assumes she survives the ordeal. However, the ending is a HUGE surprise, and what we thought was happening really was not. Performances are rock solid. Direction is on par. To gruesome for some in the end I sure, but worth a watch.
The Devil Wears Prada (2006)
loved every sappy minute of it!!!
I'm not a fan of Anne Hathaway... not to say I am against her in anyway... she just never really "did" it for me. UNTIL NOW. First of all... she totally holds her own next to Meryl Streep. Who, lets all admit, can rock just about any role out there. I went for Streep.... and the clothes. Streep carries herself like never before. She is a power woman in this. Much like a man. She rules this world of excess and success. Another great acting surprise... Emily Blunt. Wow! fantastic comedic timing, that girl is a star. And put me in a theater with Stanly Tucci any day. He is amazing. Bravo. I loved it. And there are about ten thousand new bags and shoes I absolutely must have.
