Man of Steel (2013)
If you had issues with Superman Returns, then this is for you
It may not be an issue for most moviegoers, but in the back of my mind I can't help but compare this film to Superman Returns, Warner's first attempt to do a Superman film for a modern modern audience. I liked Superman Returns, but most people didn't because there wasn't enough action, or Lex Luthor wasn't a fighting villain. That's not a problem here. About the first hour or so is all biographical, unlike Returns which kind of took place after Superman II. If you don't know Superman's origin story, this will suffice, though Marlon Brando's Krypton was prettier. Bottom line it sets the groundwork for Kal-El's journey, not to mention General Zod's. Only flashbacks allude to Clark's younger years, making the story feel less like a coming of age story. The second half however is almost all action, from huge world-saving extravagance all the way to super-powered fist fights. The very final action sequence reminded me of an episode of Justice League or Superman: The Animated Series, which aren't bound by the limits of what can be put in front of a camera and see battles that cross the entire planet earth and sometimes beyond. No live-action film in the superhero genre has captured the feel of such a battle in this way, and I couldn't help but tear up as it started to take place. Man of Steel won't make anyone forget about Christopher Reeve's performance or the story he was a part of, but this isn't about that. This is a visually stunning modern telling of the greatest comic book superhero of all time.
Cool World (1992)
A family film not for the family
A lot of classic cartoon humor pops up in this film as the story goes on. A story in which a cartoon character seduces the man who created her into making her real. She gets her wish, and almost ruins the balance between the real world and the "cool world" (where the cartoons live). It's like one of those movies like See Spot Run or Like Mike, where the world has to be saved before time runs out. Only it's not for the family.
Supergirl (1984)
Great movie for 1984
Kind of a funny story, falling way off from the origins of the comic book character and some pretty neat special effects for 1984. Okay, it would probably be the worst movie of all time in today's spotlight, but I liked it okay, nonetheless.
You Only Live Twice (1967)
Good fist fighting action, unlike the Roger Moore ones
After watching Goldeneye, I sort of went on a quest to see the older Bond movies that came along. Well, I've seen my share and in my opinion, the one with Sean Connery were the best, before Goldeneye, Tomorrow Never Dies and T.W.I.N.E. This one, like the other Sean Connery films, had real fist fight Bond-has-to-get-away action. Not that play punching they seemed to do in the Roger Moore ones. They did real fighting in You Only Live Twice, busting tables and lamps over each other. If I didn't know they were trying to kill each other, I'd think I was watching a pro wrestling match. Don't get me wrong, I liked the Roger Moore ones, too, every Bond fan does. I just wished they had a better one-on-one fist fight element to them.
