Doctor Who (2005)
I think it's an age thing
I say age thing, as when I was watching it I kept thinking of past Dr's my fave being Tom Baker, but I think this is my age, as my sister and girlfriend who are both 10 years younger then I thought Christopher Eccleston was the man in the blue box.
Christopher Eccleston, smiled a bit too much for me, hay nothing wrong with a bit of fun, but when you look like a psycho it's time to stop, but take nothing away from him he did look the part and had a wonderful mad energy.
Billie Piper, why not, she might work out, and thank God she's not like Bonnie Langford.
All in all, am glad the Dr's back.
Like I said it's my age, time to let Tom Baker go and give Christopher Eccleston
Sherlock Holmes and the Case of the Silk Stocking (2004)
A deferent kind of Sherlock Holmes
I was looking forward to this one, I do like a bit of Sherlock Holmes at Christmas, and this was worth a look.
Not bad job by Rupert Everett, not my first choice for the part, but what do I know. A deferent kind of Sherlock Holmes, and this time he is shown with flaws, in fact Dr Watson has the brains. The acting is pretty good all round.
An odd use of London, as you don't see much of the place.
Think it would be good to see Rupert Everett have a go at some more Holmes.
Ian Hart is back as Dr Watson as good as he was in "The Hound of the Baskervilles"
Tomfoolery (1970)
I can still hear the theme song now
I was thinking about this show the other day, and I had to look it up, more to see if it was real or something I half made up from my childhood.
It was one of the shows we as kids where aloud to watch, and I remember looking forward to the show ever week, and I kind of remember the song, 'putting on the nonsense, the good old fashioned nonsense'.
I would love to see it now, just to see if it was a good as I remember, but then again, maybe not, as somethings are better half remembered, like ones childhood.
Empire Road (1978)
like my family
I was doing my thing of looking around the old IMDb, and I found this show from my childhood. When it was on it was more then a show, it felt like a way of life.
Just thinking about 'Empire Road' brings back a lot memories. I remember it being one, if not the only show's at the time with a black cast, in Britain anyway, so somethings don't change. It was the must see show with my family. It was so cool to see black actors on British TV, Britain was a bit behind at that time, and sorry to say still is.. Norman Beaton, Joseph Marcel (long before fresh prince)l and Wayne Laryea where like my family, they talked like my family and looked like my family.
When it ended I missed it very much, and over 20 years later, I still do.
The January Man (1989)
This should have been good
A film with Kevin Kline, Susan Sarandon, Alan Rickman, Harvey Keitel and Rod Steiger should have been good, but this film was so bad I had to close my eyes.
What is suppose to be funny about someone who kills women. Ok, Rod Steiger got away with it in 'No way to treat a Lady', but that had one thing this did not... a good script.
Hay don't get me wrong, I like a good black comedy, as long it has comedy in it.
I think the cast where working hard, and Kevin Kline, one of the best actors in the USA, was trying to do his best with the crap he was given.
This film was written by John Patrick Shanley, who also wrote the very bad 'Joe Versus the Volcano' and won an Oscar for 'Moonstruck' (They must have had some left over that year), can the academy ask for the Oscar back?
The good thing about this film was, my friend paid for the rental and not me.
Devil in a Blue Dress (1995)
Don Cheadle is stand out
To call this one of the most underrated films of the last ten years, is an understatement. This film is up there with Chinatown' and L.A Confidential. .
Denzel Washington is cool, and smart. Don Cheadle is stand out as the cold killer with a smile, mouse.
But the real praise must go to Carl Franklin, who proves that One false move' was not just a fluke
As much as I liked the film 'L.A. Confidential' my problem with it was that a lot of black characters where being brutalised, without any chance to fight back. In this film they fight back. We have a black hero, someone who is as smart anyone else and in some cases smarter.
I hope that one day someone will film the rest of the Easy' Rawlins books.
Walking with Walken (2001)
Taking hero worship too far
Walking with Walken, is the story of an actor / impressionist who gets far too close to one of his best-loved impressions, Christopher Walken. It is told in a funny and moving way. Adam Shaw's hold on this character is the key to this film, it's through him we are guided, and the director allows him the freedom a part like this needs. It's not just funny, there is a strong message about obsession, and taking hero worship too far.
Dawn Rhodes-Shaw as Adam's wife is wonderfully, when she talks to camera, you find you are laughing and feeling for her at the same time.
The direction is fault less, and Simon Welsford is on the one to watch list of young British directors.
All in all, if you get a chance to see this film, do.

Do the Right Thing (1989)
Spike Lee's best day.
This for me has to be Spike Lee's best film to date, normally I don't think he can direct p**s downwards and he like Quentin Tarantino should never act in their films, or anyone else's come to think of it., but with film he hit the right mark.
Being a Black English boy, I found this film a wake up call. From the opening music by Public Enemy, to the call for us all to `Do the right thing'.
When one looks at a film like this, with so many characters, you feel just as with Tennessee Williams play the main character is the heat. It controls everyone's actions. Like a thermometer when the heat is to much, something is going to blow and when it dose you know someone will die. The cast is just a joy to watch. It's good to see old timers (I mean that with the most respect) like real life husband and wife Ossie Davis and Ruby Dee, up against the wonderful John Turturro. Danny Aiello has never been better and Rosie Perez has never been more sexier.
This is a film for every race, and like Spike Lee's Malcolm X, we all have to say I am black, I am white and I will `Do the right thing'
