Gettysburg (1993)
7/10
right idea, terrible script
14 December 2017
Short and to the point, i LOVED the idea that someone would make a movie from one of the few books i have read more than once, Robert Maxwell, who was a devotee of the book The Killer Angels did just that., i get it i get it you wanted to worship at the altar of the author's altar, but could you have gotten a better writer and composer for this film? MAN oh man,! it wasn't the bloviating i minded, it was the stupid banal dialogue that was coming out of the actors mouths AS they were bloviating. The most childish. insulting to the viewers, type of dialogue EVER. The scene that stinks the most is the scene where the scout tries to get the pickets to let him see General Longstreet, and then the dialogue between the scout and Longstreet with the "good Virginia tobacco" line, or the over blown Sam Elliot's speech about the "the High ground, the high ground" my friends and i, just laugh at that bit, hey Sam why don't you just drop to your knees and pound the dirt with your fist as you say it..ack!!. The rest of the film really needed to be shown as it was intended to be, on TBS, over a couple of nights. it would have helped. Oh while im ranting that God awful hat Berenger apparently, INSISTED, on wearing even though it bore NO resemblance to the real Longstreet's hat..that being said it WAS a Civil War film and it was better than others. BUT....! just think if Maxwell and Turner had hired the writers for "Glory",it would made a ton of difference.

Mummy Maniac (2007 Video)
1/10
Dreck, crap! steaming pile of you know what!!!

I have seen bad movies before but this has to be right down there with Ulli Lommel's "Black Dahlia" There is literally NOTHING of ANY value in this "film" aka "Mummy Maniac"

Scary noises and heavy breathing either mean I'm sick on the floor or at a really crazy "Frat" party. NOT as a means to scare anybody in a movie.

What!, a bunch of girls disappear and their bodies presumably re-appear somewhere,.. but dead!, and there is NO police activity?

The protagonist wanders around New York in his cool "official" New York Police Department's uniform and no one questions his authenticity as a cop?.

There is just an INCREDIBLE lack of anything approaching common sense apparent here.

Note to the "actors" in this bomb remove it from your resumes ASAP!.

Black Dahlia (2006 Video)

unwatchable

This Lommel guy might have done a few good movies in the past, but this ain't one of them!!

Horrible acting, even worse script, such as it is. most of it sounds as though it was "improv"ed on the spot. Although with these actors, using THAT term very loosely), I find that improbable too.

Note to actresses answering casting calls in some remote location, go with a friend, and if, when you arrive at the place, you see guys covered in blood with kinky fetish head gear on.. RUNNNN!! REALLLYYY FASSSTT! the other way!.

There is absolutely NOTHING of value in this film whatsoever, and Mr. Lommel, please go back to Germany and start up a small business selling beer to tourists at Oktoberfest, anything that would disallow you to make any more "dreck" like this turd!

Thattts all folks! sick and tired of movie crap in No. Cal

Ulysses (1954)
8/10
Great spectacle!
29 October 2006
I have always been a fan of Kirk Douglas, AND, of Homer's two books "The Iliad" and "The Odyssey".

So when I saw this film it was, for me, what they call a "two-fer" or two for the price of one.

The scenes with Polyphemus still impress me, and yes the comments about the wine not really being wine ( no time to ferment) are understandable, but, they don't really diminish the scene. (Hey, it's the movies).

Another thing about ANY of these Italian movies, from this one to the traditional "Hercules" movies, is where do they find all those GORGEOUS women?. YIKES!!.

I also love the scenes between the witch Circe, and Ulysses, there is a faint green glow the lighting designer bathes Circe with, to make her seem more "spooky".

All in all this is a great movie for those who like Greco-Roman mythology, or Italian sword and sandal films, or even if you are a big Kirk Douglas fan!.

BTW, look for a young Anthony Quinn, and remember that these two men would join up again later in "Lust for Life".

So sit back and enjoy a 2500 year old story that seems as fresh and exciting as any story you see today, maybe even more so!. Pssst sorry NO GCI!

A noble effort

When I read the cast list for this film i thought "hey with these people it should be great!" well... it's not great, but it does do a good job at exposing the hypocrisy of power, and who is better suited to govern, a single person/regime or that amorphous element named "The People".

Donald Sutherland and Rafe(don't call me Ralph!) Fiennes, give wonderful acting performances, and there are many great supporting roles too. Including the lovely Lara Flynn Boyle, (watch for the scene with her in a skin tight latex dress playing kinky sex games with her husband!,it made the rental price, for me anyway, worth paying ! Woo Hoo!).

There is a lot of interesting and intelligent dialog through out the film too , the director/writer is obviously a literate man.

My problem, is that this film tries to hard to be too many things at once.

BTW, the poem that Sutherland's and Fiennes' characters quote is by William Butler Yeats and it's named "The Second Coming", and the haunting piano music you hear, you might remember is also used in "Barry Lyndon" and I believe is written by Mozart

It's definitely worth a rental though.
