Beowulf & Grendel (2005)
Technology vs. Story
First of all I want to say: I have a handicap. I simply can't finish a book. And Hollywood hasn't exactly helped me along the way. And I forgive them ..since it after all is MY problem :) Here I am, ended up being a big fan of cinema and every aspect of it. Love the big guys who push the technology (you know who you are) and the great actors. So of course, when the time came and Zemeckis turned Hopkins into CG, I had to see it and thought it was great. The keyword is "thought". On my way to rate "Beowulf" here on the one and only IMDb, I noticed that a, to me, unknown director had beat Zemeckis to it. After reading a couple of comments here, I was convinced that I had to see this version of the myth. And boy, all of a sudden this story becomes a myth with all the qualities one would expect. I LOVE this movie. If you want CG, effects, dragons, Angelina Jolie, and a story -based- on the Beowolf myth - then see the 2007 version. Nice stuff. But if you want a REAL story with a beautiful point, great acting, and an authentic mood - settle for no less than Sturla Gunnarssons version. Bravo. As I started out saying, I've given up books, so I don't plan on reading the Beowulf story, but I'd think this movie is the one closest to the original story.
Closer and Closer (1996)
Worst movie ever
OK.. at the time of writing, 65 people voted for this movie, bringing it to a 5 out of 10 rating. My guess is that only the film crew voted. So I'm here to bring some justice to it all.
Never has a movie provoked the audience's intelligence more than this one. Given, I laughed out loud quite a bit - but the movie/story absolutely didn't want me to.
I've seen a LOT of bad movies. A LOT. But man, this one blows them all away.
Speaking '96 computers, ridiculous acting, and wheelchair chases - and we have young Tarantinos who can't get their ideas financed. Yup, life's a cruel joke.
Along Came a Spider (2001)
What's in the bowl? I'll tell you: Crap!
Now, I don't want this to be a bashing. So I'll try keep my voice down..
This is amazing. A perfect example of Hollywood being in control of everything in a movie production. Either that or the writer and/or director has gone raving mad!
Nothing in this movie can't be foreseen. Every little detail is spelled out - so the stupid people in the audience can keep up. Actually I find this offensive!
And what's with the computers/software in movies these days?? Is Hollywood making fun of us? Don't they think that we know how computers work in this day and age? These kinds of scenes almost make me leave the cinema... Combine the "hacking" of the Unix system in Jurassic Park with the "look around corners" in Blade Runner. And there you go.
The Actors do their best to keep the story afloat, but not even Mr. Freeman saves it. Sad. Sad.
Hmmm, I have to say something good.. Morgan Freeman's acting is, as always super. Monica Potter is.. well, nice to look at :) all do their best despite the bad bad script.
Oh, and it was a GREAT laugh! I really recommend this movie if you've had a couple of beers and need a laugh with your friends!
I'm sorry my first review had to turn into a bashing anyway, but I guess this movie just triggered me...
