The Goonies (1985)
I Even Liked the Villans!
This is such an entertaining film. The kids (who today, are no longer kids)really held it together. Sean Astin as the pubescent, not so healthy dreamer who fills his friends with hope, and Josh Brolin as his older brother, handsome even at that age, leading their friends in the quest of their young lives...to save their homes from the <obligatory and hateful> land baron and his vapid son. But the villans, especially Robert Davi as Jake Fratelli, keep this movie moving along. Mama Fratelli (Anne Ramsey), evil and partial to her son, Francis (Joe Pantoliano)growls and sputters delightfully. Robert Davi, however, crooning Italian opera, made the biggest impression on me. This movie made me a big fan. His delivery, presence and comic badness coupled with that incredible singing voice and unforgetable face keeps me looking for his name in newly released films. Goonies was a wonderful introduction to Mr. Davi and, since Profiler is in reruns, I hope to see him in more featured roles.
The Hot Chick (2002)
Silly Fun - Under-use of Robert Davi
This is a silly film that should be viewed for what it is. Fantasy. I saw it with that in mind and, even with that mindset, I found it a bit over the top. It was worth the price of admission to see Robert Davi though. Even though he was grossly underused. This guy needs more exposure. Rob Schneider was his predictible manic self but the story line was fun. Again, I went to see this film for a dose of Robert Davi. It was a small dose and I'll need another spoonful soon. Won't SOMEBODY give him a role that he's worthy of?
Profiler (1996)
Need More Robert Davi
I only recently discovered this amazing TV show and I started watching because I realized that Robert Davi was a featured player. Profiler was a great show. Intense, smart and entertaining. But the best thing about it is Robert Davi. Yes, I know. He's not the quintessential leading man. Like Bogart or Bronson, he's no pretty boy and he's not a kid. But he does have a certain dangerous sexiness. That, tempered with that hint of tenderness and vulnerability made his love scenes truly breathtaking. I do wish the "powers that be" would give him a chance to show his stuff. He'd shine in a film along the lines of Casablanca. Just give us more of Davi. This light has been under a bushel for long enough.
