Sin & Redemption (1994)
What the !**!?
Question number one: why would anyone write this drivel?
Question number two: why would anyone give it the go ahead to go into production?
Question number three: is there anyone out there who DIDN'T know who was going to rape her the second he said hello to her?
Question number four: why did the main cast members listen to their agents when they said 'Hey, this is a good one'?
This film was contrived, a travesty of the film industry, a shame that the cast and crew made this when they could have been doing something worthwhile with their time (such as performing their own tonsillectomies with a rusty spoon and a pair of child safe scissors), an insult to anyone who has ever gone through the events portrayed and an insult to anyone who ever watched it.
**Plot Spoiler** I am, unfortunately for myself, one of those people who, no matter how bad a film is, has to watch to the end to see what happens. I'm kind of glad I did with this one, as I now get to slate that stupid, weak as a baby's little finger, utterly ridiculous ending. Her rape cost her her reputation and her close relationship with her father and he manages to redeem himself by donating a kidney or whatever is was to her daughter to save her life. It's the least he can do. She owes him no graditude for that. The only thing she owes him is a kick in the groin and a spell in a penitentiary. **End of Spoiler**
The people responsible for this ludicrous rigmorale have a lot of explaining to do.
Two-Minute Warning (1976)
Somebody shoot me!!!
I read about this film in the tv guide and thought it sounded good. Oh, how wrong I was. When it started, I realised pretty quickly it was a load of tripe, but was looking forward to the performance of Charlton Heston. I needn't have bothered.
All the characters were straight out of a formulaic film-makers hand book and I very quickly found myself picking out the ones I thought would not live to see the end of the film. 100% correctly.
If I start watching a film, I can't switch it off no matter how bad it is. I have to watch right to the end. I really wish I hadn't with this one.
With many films with this plot line, people, including myself, are watching hoping that the police catch the sniper before anyone gets hurt. Within 30 minutes of this pile of codswallop, I found myself siding with the sniper, willing him to shot somebody just so that something would happen.
**Plot Spoiler** One of the most annoying features of this film was the way the sniper kept lining up on the crowd then putting the gun down. I lost count of how many times he did it but by the second or third time, I found myself yelling at the screen for him to shoot. When he (finally) did open fire and people started screaming and running for their lives, I wanted to scream along with them. They could have at least got some actors in. They nearly had a touching moment at the end with the priest cradling Jack Klugman's lifeless body. But since I didn't really care about the characters as they were so 2 dimensional and I knew Klugman was going to die all along, it didn't go anywhere near close to redeeming the travesty that was the rest of the film. **End of Spoiler**
If you have any self respect at all, don't watch this film. And if you have watched it, don't watch it again.
Abre los ojos (1997)
Slightly confusing yet astounding
This was not quite what I expected. I don't really know what I was expecting, but this was not it. But I did love this film. It was so fascinating.
In my opinion, the underlying message of this film is that what we accept to be reality is not necessarily the truth and can be turned upside down in an instant.
I would rate the performances in this film very highly. Until I watched this film, I didn't really know anything about Penelope Cruz, other than she was the woman who was going out with Tom Cruise. But after this, it became clear to me that she is a very talented actress. I would also like to praise Eduardo Noriega for his performance as Cesar. I found it moving and also he brilliantly conveyed the emotional torment that his character was feeling. He really did seem lost. I can not mention all of the performances that really struck me in this film as it was almost all of them.
I think that the title of this film gives everyone a perfect motto for life. 'Abres los ojos' or 'Open your eyes'. I would strongly recommend this film to everyone. It has everything that I think makes a good film. Conflict, drama, love, friendship, thrills, the ability to make you feel empathy towards all the central characters, even a touch of comedy.
I have not seen the remake, Vanilla Sky, yet but I do hope that it is true to this original. I also hope that Tom is as good as Eduardo.
You must watch this film.
The Sight (2000)
Fantastic!!!
I absolutely loved this. I thought the performances were fantastic and I loved the concept and the script. In my opinion this may have been a rip off of 'The Sixth Sense' but at least this had some level of charm (way off the scale). The only thing that puzzled me were the constant references to 'Alice in Wonderland'. I didn't get that. Am I being thick or was any one else puzzled? Any way, this was fantastic. I thoroughly enjoyed this and cannot wait to see it again. Andrew McCarthy and Honor Blackman head a immensely talented cast. There was not, in my opinion, a single bad performance in this film.
If you ever get the chance to watch this, either for the first time or again, TAKE THE CHANCE!!!
Moulin Rouge! (2001)
Wow!
This film is amazing! This is one of the best films I have ever seen. Every time I watch it, I notice something that I didn't see before. Every aspect of the film fits together, there is no moment that makes you think 'That doesn't fit' or 'I don't think he/she would react like that'. The fast moving, surrealistic approach was superb and Luhrmann got it spot on. The chemistry between Ewan McGregor and Nicole Kidman was brilliant. They were so convincingly in love. The entire cast was brilliant, particularly Jim Broadbent and John Lequizamo as Toulouse-Lautrec. And Kylie's cameo as The Green Fairy was brilliant. I laughed hysterically, I cried my eyes out, I basically fell in love with all the characters. I would recommend this film to anyone who believes in freedom, beauty, truth and love.
Annie (1982)
The best!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
!!!Spoilers!!!
The very first time I watched this film, I was hooked. God only knows how many times I have seen it since. And every time I have cried at the bit where Rooster, Lily and Miss Hannigan kidnap her from Daddy Warbucks.
Carol Burnett, Tim Curry and Albert Finney are all excellent. As is Aileen Quinn as little orphan Annie. In fact the entire cast are brilliant. Annie is by far one of the best films I have ever seen. One of my favourite parts is the bit where they come in from the movies and Grace and Daddy Warbucks put Annie to bed while she's sleeping. And another fave is when all the kids from the orphanage go looking for Daddy Warbucks' house because they know what Rooster, Lily and Miss Hannigan are up to. Absolute brilliance. One thing I have to say is never, never, never, never watch the sequel. It is complete rubbish!!
Suddenly Susan (1996)
I like it!
Although this is not one of the best television shows ever created, I have to say that the writers are very good. The way that they handled the tragic death of actor David Strickland was excellent. And I have to praise the stars for their performances in that episode. During the story it cuts to all of the main characters in a blackened room all relaying their favourite memories of Todd (David's character) and they were blatantly speaking, not just about the loss of the their fictional friend but also their real life friend. The characters are extremely run of the mill, present in every sitcom set in a work place but their is something endearing about all of them. Sometimes the redhead's 'spunkiness' is sometimes a little over played she is an interesting character for the majority. And the show would be nothing without the presence of the irreplacable, majorly talented Judd Nelson. His characters wit and charm are inexpendable, not to mention the fact that he provides a nice little spot of eye candy! Overall, I have to say that this is a watchable, though not excessively brilliant show.
Quantum Leap (1989)
Truly amazing television
As a die hard fan of "Quantum Leap", I would find it difficult to believe that anyone would have a bad word to say about this show or its two main characters, Sam and Al.
The two stars, Scott Bakula and Dean Stockwell, are brilliant and the characters they play are amazingly deep and complex.
I was literally in tears when the final episode was screened, partly because it was ending and partly because it was so poignant and well written.
The situations Sam finds himself in week after week were sometimes funny, sometimes moving, and always brilliant.
Definitely a televisual masterpiece.
