Julien Donkey-Boy (1999)
Uncle Eddy would have been proud!
There are those who will applaud this type of film as being "out there" and "Brave". Then again people like me exist and although I know that life is s***, I don´t want to pay ?5 to have that feeling reinforced. Unlike other Dogme movies, this movie was made primarily to disgust and confuse. It was not a sympathetic treatment of the schizophrenic Julien but rather a demonisation of the handicapped. It must serve some purpose to have Werner Herzog making incestuous advances on his son but what that was, such as the rest of the movie, was beyond those who hadn´t already reached for the sick bag. Words cannot fully express my utter disgust at this film and the subversion of all that Dogme is supposed to represent. Sad. It really is sad.
Mulholland Dr. (2001)
Silencio? Mierde!
I think the summary more or less sums up my thoughts on this "movie". I feel that the more idiosyncratic that Mr. Lynch tries to be, the more people will kiss his directing boots. This movie was as accessible as Fire walk with me if you hadn´t seen Twin Peaks. He does get his kicks from pointless lesbian encounters and masturbation. I suppose if you´re into that then this is the movie for you. There were a few actual funny moments but I suppose I laughed at the sheer stupidity of anyone actually funding something like this.
Jurassic Park III (2001)
Flogging a dead dinosaur...........
Oh dear, Oh dear, poor old Sam Neill must need to pay the rent rather urgently if he has to make this type of rubbish to keep himself in the style to which he is accustomed. This movie stinks worse than the dino do-do which features prominently in this, the most inane of the three J.P movies (to date!). William H Macy simply recreated his fargo persona to play the tile salesman and as for the rest of the cast? well, It´s nice to be nice so I won´t comment on their atrocious performances. The Velociraptors stole the show (such as it was) and the storyline of family get-togetherness, be it dumb midwesterners, Raptors or Pterodactyls was really clichéed. Still, what was I expecting? Crime and Punishment? A stinker, a real stinker!
The Dawn (1936)
The dawn of a new era for Irish cinema!
An absolute triumph over adversity! The Dawn was made on a budget that would defy shoestring status! Many of the actors involved were totally amateur and although this is evident in some of the performances, they can hardly be faulted for trying. The movie deals with betrayal and forgiveness in a time of war, in this case, the Irish war of Independence. This movie was made at a time when social divisions still ran deep in the Irish psyche and so it was a brave move to make it in Ireland and not in America, like so many "oirish" theme movies before then. It is interesting to note that many of the "amateur" actors were actually involved in the War of Independence and this makes the battle scenes all the more exciting and poignant at the same time. A classic, a gem hidden under the shamrock!
The Gift (2000)
Yet another Sixth sense......
I´m sure that you´ve all read the reviews and may even know a little about the paper thin, cliche ridden plot so I won´t add to the misery. What I will say is that Mr. Thornton could have written something more substantial and Mr. Raimi should have smelled this movie a mile away. As usual, Mr. Reeves gave as wooden a performance as his limited repetoire allows. However, Ms. Blanchett did her best with what she had and so did the rest of the cast. An uninvolving little movie, to be sure, but filled with enough suspense and needless gore to make the trip worthwhile for the studio. Ho Hum.....
