12 Kilometers (2016)
Darkly psychedelic, literal decent into madness
The first thing that stood out to me, even from the first few frames, was simply how awesome this film looked. It opens with this vast, bold (probably drone recorded?) shot over mountains which is a really satisfying juxtaposition to basically every other aspect of the film. It also happens to be extremely well lit; I got a vibe that was equal parts dark and psychedelic. Smooth camera work, framing and edits come together to really kind of make me scratch my head at how this was all achieved without a sizable studio backing.
As far as the film itself, the content rather; it leaves me wanting more. I mean that in the best possible way, I literally want more because what I saw truly hooked me. I assumed this would be a traditional monster movie of sorts but it's an entirely different beast. There's also really limited exposition, which makes the latter half of it that much more mysterious, violent and disorientating.
