The Roost (2005)
First long film by West was surprisingly okay
Although alot of people don't understand the fact that this film was shot on a 16mm film camera, it had it's flaws. But imagine using actual film to shoot a movie and ending up with a result like this, children of this time cannot imagine the hard labor to make something like this!
I myself am a massive fan of Ti West's style; normal people doing normal stuff, ending up in not so normal situations. Today the crowd needs big motion, crazy plotlines and exceptional characters, with off course a shit load of CGI special effects. West proves that this is not needed in order to entertain a crowd.
Although it's really slow paced, some scenes were too dark, the atmosphere of the film in general was really nice. Acting was just enough to believe most of the film! Great first try of West, and watching his further films, you see he progresses as a horror filmmaker and sure fixes the flaws "The Roost" has!
One thing to add, is that Ti West is a master in telling certain stuff with only sound! And he proves right! These days when something fucked up happens, like a kill for example, it's a raw shot and the crowd sees the gore. What actually makes something scary, in my opinion, is hearing how someone dies and leave it for the crowd to imagine how cruel the kill actually was!
La paranza dei bambini (2019)
Too much going on
The beginning was quite nice to watch, but after a certain point the film becomes a long sequence of actions which don't have their consequences. I had and still have 1 million unanswered questions about certain characters, events which happened in the film and relations in between them.
It was a nice try to portret the gangster life in Napels, but i think they wanted to show too much, which lead to a non profound film on all levels. Feels like a big missed opportunity.
The ending was super frustrating, i just watched the credits out of despite. You can end a film pessimistically, but at least end your story. It felt like the film ended midway, just way too many loose ends!
It's worth a watch but this film probably will disappear in my dusty memories as "one of those films you once watched and then never looked back to".
Walk All Over Me (2007)
Mislead by multiple factors
I would like to start this review with the fact that i never write reviews, yet once a time I stumble upon an overrated movie which doesn't deserve to have such good reviews.
Walk all over me is a extremely badly acted film (Leelee Sobieski is so bad at acting, i don't get why people love to see her on the screen) which tries to explain the struggle of a girl who is used to run away from their problems. She goes back to her old babysitter, who is (surprise surprise) a dominatrix. After a big hustle of useless footage (her trying on the clothes, dancing, getting caught etc.), the film starts to throw over-complicated scenario's to your head, which, in the film, make sense in some point but the way they portret it, is so cheap, banal and not original at all.
I don't know what they wanted this film to be, but one thing it has become for sure;
A failed portret of what could've been the story of a woman experiencing the BDSM scene for the first time.
Oh and before i finish, if you're into BDSM and try to look for a turn on, just turn away.
The film walks over you!
