O Pioneers! (1992)
If Willa Cather's book struck a cord with you then so will this film.
I have yet to see a film that follows its original version so well. More often than not books and movies of the same story, just don't match up. In this case the people are just as alive and able to pull at your heart strings either source and follow each other to perfection. Some of the actors are in a new genre than what we are used to seeing them in, but it all adds to a wonderful effect when they pull off their parts so well. This movie captures Willa Cather's book well and I highly reccommend it to any who love her stories. This is a wonderful film!
The Shining (1980)
Not the best at following the book, but great just the same.
This movie is actually wonderful! Stanley Kubrick doesn't choose to commit much of the actual book to film; however, he does a great job at creating an atmosphere of terror and confusion of all characters involved. This movie delves into a lot of things. There is not so much terror in the supernatural, but more in the little it takes to lead Jack Torrence (by the ghosts) to try and kill his family. That this character wants to do it and tries is what is horrible. Both the book and movie show this. I think that is the main plot of both stories. For there are almost no other connections to the characters Stephen King created and the ones that Jack Nicholson and cast became.
The scene with the bathtub lady is the most memorable for being frightening. Well...for being gross and horrifying. I recommend watching this movie but with the intent to look at it as a film separate from what you know about the story of The Shining. It is in itself a masterpiece.
