The Real Charlie Chaplin (2021)
Barely scratched the surface
A great artistic effort to dissect the tramp but ultimately falls quite short of gleaning the "real" Charlie Chaplin. There is no more investigative work here than the gossip columns the writers clearly detested.
It is unlikely that CC would have wanted to be vindicated at this point in time and certainly not in such an offhand and uninspiring fashion.
Eventually we are left baffled by the lack of any insight into his mind, his genius or even his filmmaking.
The Falcon and the Winter Soldier (2021)
Just cannot get engaged
Finished three episodes and still just cannot get involved emotionally. Comics are all about heart. They need us to invest in the hero, root for him, hate the villain and feel elated with a good ending. With TFATWS, I just can't decide yet who is the bad guy and who should I be rooting for! What about this new captain America? I don't think the writers have decided yet if he is going to be the good guy or he is a secret villain.
As for the Falcon, there is a disaster. Again, is he a detective? Is he a smart guy, or is he just in the wrong position. There is barely a flicker of the guts and heart that he displayed in the Avengers movies. So far he could be a sidekick if I am being generous.
This show needs to decide what it's going to be and it needs to find a direction.
Skyscraper (2018)
couldn't finish it. seriously
At one point midway into the action, the hero logs into the security system. He could have turned on the firefighting system and put us all out of our collective misery. Nope... just looks at meaningless 3d graphics and moves on.
sums up the whole movie... Every action is the opposite of what should be done. In a fire you go down not up. duh.
Bohemian Rhapsody (2018)
Excellent performance by Malik in a mediocre and shallow pander
It is clear that remaining members of the band had total creative control of this movie. It never really dives into the evolution of the music and there is very little character development. It is down to the superb performance of Rami Malek to let us glimpse a little of what could have been. The movie pulls on all the punches. There is barely a controversial character and the villain is figuratively shoved down our throats in a manner of speaking.
Being a Queen fan of decades, I found myself watching a summary of the band's portfolio rather than ansight. If you have seen the excellent documentary "Days of our Lives" then you are in for a dull couple of hours really. But still watchable just to see Mailk shine.
The Lost Battalion (2001)
Good acting but very mediocre direction
I will not comment on the facts or omissions or what actually happened versus what was portrayed. My comment is on the direction of the movie. The director appears to have learned his tricks of trade through reruns of "saving private Ryan" and "Band of Brothers". Where the camera work on those productions is superb and groundbreaking through the use of the first person perspective and excellent angles, in this production it feels contrite and jittery at best and gimmicky at worst. Wardrobe - obviously - took great pains to recreate the uniforms and equipment to great accuracy but the special effects department let down the whole visual experience with the acrobatic tumbles of the soldiers and the thriller style stunt work. The Ardenne shelling in "Band of Brothers" was nerve shattering and brought the terrible ordeal of the soldiers to the viewer in a way that is memorable. The attempt to recreate that effect here completely misses the mark.
I'm afraid that the overall experience has not been pleasant and I kept wishing the director would stop trying to impress us and just tell the story.
Forrest Gump (1994)
My Top of the list movie
I can't understand why anyone would not like this movie. Some say it's too American. You have to remember that this is a "Movie". Movies are for entertainment and for sheer entertainment value, this film gets a 10 from me. The direction, The absolute convincing acting from Tom Hanks, Gary sinise, and Sally Fields just makes you forget that they ever were in any other movie. I would have to say that since I saw it, if anybody mentions the words film and best in the same sentence, "Forrest Gump" is the first movie that comes to my mind. every time! I just can't wait for the DVD edition to come out.
