Get Out (I) (2017)

Outstanding film, and even more so for a horror movie
8 November 2019
What an outstanding original story! It's absolutely brilliant! I rarely watch horror movies, because I generally find them too mindless. But not this one. This film is creative, it's intelligent, and it's slick. It's an amazing package for a horror movie! I really felt the terror as the story unfurls in front of my eyes. Very effective execution based on a most original idea!

Yeah... Nuh.
8 November 2019
I watched this because I really like Get Out. So I had expected this film to be of a similar calibre. I don't really have an issue with the acting or anything else specific. It's really just the script that completely ruins it for me. Unlike Get Out, the script of this film makes very little sense, which restricts its ability to carry a coherent message, or to convey a deeper meaning. With no sense and no meaning, there's just very little to see in a film...

Quality movie ticking all the boxes
8 November 2019
I really liked this movie. I hadn't seen the Oscar-nominated Danish original, so I picked this movie to watch based on the their casting, who are all solid professionals with good taste... The script here is tight and solid, miles above mainstream films. Acting is tiptop, on point, there's just nothing to fault in general. I enjoyed the film from beginning to end. It's really enjoyable!

Cute and pleasant film, as an epilogue to the TV series
19 October 2019
I haven't watched much of the TV series, so, watching this film as a stand alone product, it feels a bit incomplete. There are a lot of characters involved in this film, with multiple story lines happening. But there is very little set up of the stories, and there's very limited character development along the way. Knowing that this was a popular TV series to begin with, this film definitely comes across as an epilogue to the TV series. This film is made based on the assumption that you already know the background story, that you already know the journey each character has taken prior to this, so the film is merely an vehicle to give people some closure, and to tie up lose ends that the TV series may not have had the opportunity to accomplish. The story and the characters are pleasant and polite. Everybody is well dressed, and all good people are rewarded, so, it certainly makes for pleasant viewing. But the script has no depth and no complexity, there's really not much to see here, other than polite people being politely dressed, mingling with other politely dressed polite people...

Great film

Great script, great acting! Here, we have a solid story. The story develops with great depth, with humanity, with sorrow and comedy. The film is very enjoyable. I consider it 2 hours of my life well spent watching it.

A gem of a sci fi thriller
19 October 2019
What a great little gem! I've watched this film three times - something I very rarely do. What I value the most about this film is the story line. The story is tight, and simple, and clever, which is a lot more than what I can say about many mainstream sci fi blockbusters. They probably deserve even better rating, given the limited budget they had to work with, in order to get this result. Good work!

What a wonderful film!
19 October 2019
I love this film! The story line is superb, the directing is just wonderful, the acting is engaging - I think the casting was fitting, the set and the costumes were just magnificent! The experience of watching the film may be more satisfying for the romantic audience, though. The story builds slowly from delicate details, takes you on an emotional ride, that you'll have to let go a little in order to fully enjoy. I think this might be true with the book itself as well, this is a story particularly for the romantic and the sentimental.

Interesting film which leave a lasting impression
19 October 2019
I rate the film for its intention, for its rawness, and for the impression it leaves after I walk out of the cinema. Nevertheless, I don't feel convinced by the acting, nor the somewhat implausible story line. I can watch this film as a well-packaged piece of entertainment. But I don't think I'd be missing much, if I hadn't watched it.

Magnificent!
19 October 2019
What a magnificent film is this! Particularly compared to the cliche crowd-pleasing films. And even more so compared to the typical super hero movies. I walked into the cinema with limited expectations, thinking this might just be another crowd-pleasing, CG enhanced, rehash of another super hero story. Nope! Not at all! The story is fresh, and blunt, and nuanced, and relevant. The story has all these amazing qualities that are not normally present for films in the super hero genre. Joaquin Phoenix is magnificent in it, absolutely, without a doubt. I also particularly appreciate that the director has chosen such a particular story line for the film, positioned the film with a particular direction, and allowed Phoenix to embody the role to this magnificent depth. The film showed so much promise, that I felt there was still potential to allow even more depth and more grounding, which is why I'm giving it 9, rather than a 10. But, it's an excellent film, and Phoenix could not have done a more perfect job!

Interesting divergence from the original story
16 June 2019
I love the original story that this movie is based on. The original short story is very lean, very compact, while laying out a world rich with suggestions, potentials and possibilities. The potentials and the possibilities are both there and not there. This magical realm of existence is what Haruki Murakami does best.

In building a film from an extremely short story, this movie has added more layers to it. There's now more complexity, more details, more side issues. Particularly the many social issues that have been brought in, these issues completely change the essence of the story: this was originally a story of human nature, it is now a story of class warfare...

As a result, this story has left that magical realm. In this new story, choices have been made, and the potentials and the possibilities have been killed off. I am fascinated by this uniquely Korean expression of it, but I also mourn the loss of the magic in the original story that is more universal to all of us.

Also, as soon as you start adding more details, a story becomes messier, and you have to be extra careful that all details are coherent and consistent with each other. I find myself questioning some details as I was watching the film.

Acting-wise, I find the acting from all of the actors a bit unnatural (overly dramatic). It might have been a cultural expression, maybe it's something the director was going for, to express the pressure of their environment.
