Maja Ma (2022)
Didn't know I needed this film! Very sweet!
Wasn't sure what to expect from this and wow it's the queer, family, comedy/drama I didn't know I needed!
Put it on one day to enjoy a bit of Bollywood and this had me laughing out loud as well as being very moving at times.
I found the sibilant rivalry accurate and funny, and the Dad a crack up.
The sister got me so good a couple of times too "I will destroy you!" Lol.
It made me think about our mothers and all the sacrifices they have made for us, sometimes at the expense of their own happiness.
The characters were all so well done and the dancing of course ten out of ten.
If you want something sweet to watch, and a few laughs, check it out.
Benedetta (2021)
Burst out laughing multiple times....but didn't hate it!
I enjoyed this in the same way I enjoyed the director's other films (Robocop and a little film called SHOWGIRLS) they are ridiculous, over-the-top, and unashamed!
I could not decide if this film was trying to be a romance, a historical drama, a comedy? It was trying to make a point, and nearly got there with some interesting touches, but ultimately it seems to be about what you expect: something-something-forbidden-something-Horny Nuns.
It's definitely written from the male gaze and the romance was a real head scratcher to me- no slow burning seduction, just straight into it.
A few scenes made me burst out laughing, which I don't think is the desired affect but enjoyable either way.
Brimstone (2016)
What a mess
*Spoiler alert*
Had potential but it's overly complicated, long, and unnecessarily cruel to the point of being ridiculous.
Very badly edited and the shots do nothing for anyone in this film, audience included.
Seriously- everything bad that can happen to the main character does, and that's mostly before we see the medieval torture device: the scolds bridle.
I feel like this film is some weird pain olympics of women's suffering and being written and directed by a man, it misses the mark and just keeps going.
Felt like an insincere imagining- as if one or two issues such a domestic abuse or rape weren't horrific enough in the writers mind, so had to throw in mutilation and all sorts of other plot twists, and then turn back to rake over them again and again.
When I ran through a summary it started to become laughable: a lesbian, mute, midwife, sex worker, murderer, identity thief, sign language expert, mill owner, mother, fugitive and almost child bride.
Come on.
The editing is lousy, with every scenario being spelled out for your frame by frame. The audience is told what is going on, not shown.
The majority of the shots were so uninteresting which really is a shame since there's some nice action scenes and some beautiful landscapes.
To add insult to injury, the film ends with a cheesy voice over about something something strong someone or rather.
Just a mess.
Greenland (2020)
Give it a miss.
Following a wealthy family of three specially selected for a rescue program and their struggles.
I kept asking myself why I was supposed to care about these people? They have a kid....but yeah so do lots of other folks who weren't so lucky?
With no new ground covered, it's was a tedious and stupid journey. So many plot holes and poor story decisions.
Give it a miss.
Saint Maud (2019)
Perverted, twisted and deeply sad. Astounding.
If you're expecting jump scares, gore or any other typical horror tropes (re the tired exorcism/possession -yawn) , you won't find them here.
What you will find, is a creeping, claustrophobic character study that doesn't let up. Isolation, desperation, shame, punishment...
Perverted, twisted and deeply sad. An astounding movie, written and directed by Rose Glass, and beautifully acted by Morfydd Clark.
Bliss (2019)
Did someone from D.A.R.E write this?
It really felt like this is a film by someone who has had a very sheltered experience or hadn't done any research. This is what they imagine it's like to experience drugs and it misses the mark by a mile.
You've probably seen worse outside your local 7 Eleven.
Everything from the environments, the relationships and the characters come off as cheesy and inauthentic.
The sex scenes felt like they were there so you could be "shocked" and disapprove of the terrible choices the main female character was making, as if a threesome between consenting adults was the worst sin you could commit - ooooo women who enjoy sex, so edgy, much disapprove.
The film keeps trying to shock with these dramatic experiences and "bold" visuals but it's all rather tame.
Nothing new here that hasn't been done better somewhere else. No new ground broken.
The Turning (2020)
Potential ruined by poor editing.
This could have been great but it's like they started filming before they'd decided on an ending, or ran out of cash and had to make do with editing bits together.
Disappointing and confused- ultimately a waste of everyone's time.
Missing 411 (2016)
Not as Bad as I thought it would be...no real mystery.
I'm familiar with and not a fan of the books and based on that, I thought this would be terrible.
I was intrigued by the cases shown in this documentary because of the human element and the impact it has on people involved in the search and families.
I also enjoyed the film touching on the hindrance of social media to grieving families.
It's enough to say that exploring nature can be dangerous and disorientating especially for a small child. Experienced hikers, mountaineers, hunters and guides are also among those who go missing each year and rather than add to the mystery of it all, I felt that just says more about our fragility as human beings and our ability to make mistakes, especially when exposed to the elements.
Missing 411: The Hunted (2019)
Some interesting cases, but the rest is a stretch
The truth is often stranger than fiction and while it's entertaining to imagine paranormal reasons behind these mysteries, Paulides is grasping at straws.
While there are one or two curious cases here, some of the "evidence" is a huge stretch. This was also apparent in the book Missing 411.
Details like all missing people were wearing similar colours, and other very loosely related information just seem too far fetched. I think David Paulides wants a certain outcome and is reaching and stretching details to fit that narrative, regardless how unlikely it is.
While some details of cases seem unusual or eerie, they're actually extremely common in missing persons cases, particularly in dense wilderness.
Some of these 'strange' detail have scientifically proven reasons, for example why in some cases clothing was found but not the missing person- look up 'Paradoxical Undressing' with hypothermia. It's been well researched by scientists, Search And Rescue, mountaineers and is a common occurrence with missing people.
Mama/M.A.M.A. (2003)
Not much of a documentary, Very Biased
Opens with the harrowing tale of a woman who's new born child is removed by Child Protective Services at birth. Distressing right?
Even more distressing when you find out this mother had been abusing her other infant children and is accused of injecting them with insulin....
You get a quick brush over on this by the accused Mother and tearful accounts of being wrongfully accused by the family and little to no mention of medical records and other evidence.
Turned it off after about 20 mins as it was clear it was only interested in portraying these families as wrongfully accused victims and presented very little findings or evidence from Doctors or court cases.
Nabarvene ptace (2019)
Excessively long and arduous
Didn't find this covered much new ground really.
It's excessively long and arduous with no real breakthroughs.
Although similar to Elem Klimov's 'Come And See', it's nowhere near as compelling.
The Dead Don't Die (2019)
Insufferable
Just awful.
Get ready to be told the same joke that wasn't funny the first time over and over and over until you shrivel up and wish you would in-fact, die. All the while thinking it's oh so clever and witty.
Cronyism at it's worst- actors in the film just for the sake of it who add absolutely nothing to an already bland story.
I don't understand why or how this film was made.
An excruciating hour and forty-five minutes long, just insufferable.
