Infini (2015)
If the Doom movie with The Rock was rebooted, it would be this
A decent watch overall boosted heavily by the acting and set design. Shows a lot of unnecessary horror. Almost a carbon copy of the Doom movie.
Was refreshing to see people not do stupid stuff like in other typically sci-fi or horror movies.
The Last Thing He Wanted (2020)
Better than the reviews suggest 7-8
It's more likely a 7-8 and the 3-4 is like an internet mob protest vote.
Glad I watched it without checking reviews first.
Most of the complaints seem to be around the story and that it was too difficult to follow, was boring or annoying character actions and I'll address these below.
First and foremost, if you've never heard about Contras before or watched a movie on it, straight up certain things are probably going to be more confusing for you. This includes not only the plot and settings but also why the 'bad guys' are doing bad things.
While there are some action scenes this is more of a slower thriller (which after seeing the trailer (after watching the movie), I can see why some would seem to be misled especially those with short attention spans).
As for the main character's actions, it can be boiled down to her love for her father (the title is "The Last Thing He Wanted" after all) intertwined with her investigative journalistic drive to uncover the truth further mixed in with who on earth should she trust.
Finally, there is no feel good Disney happy ending for everyone here.
PS: Acting was great and there was nothing wrong with the cinematography.
Pine Gap (2018)
Surprisingly good but let down by the ending
If the 24 series was set solely in CTU with some Cludo, Australian outback and basketball you'd get Pine Gap.
It's not your typical action spy thriller but slower intrigue that comments on real political issues Australia faces where it's sandwiched between it's old ally America and newer juggernaut trading partner China. Throw in a US intelligence base situated in Australia, manned by Americans and Australians and you get the powder keg that is Pine Gap.
The 'America is not the world saviour' comments are refreshing but gets lost when America becomes some god-like voice in the ops room.
The signals aspect is new and reminiscent of The Wolf's Call, although not as fleshed out and in-depth.
Certain camera angles are annoying to the viewer. I believe they are trying to show a very on the nose disconnect between two people talking but it just ends up being irritating.
Interesting enough to keep me watching till the end but that's where the execution falls apart - when they rush to solve the Cludo problem. The mystery will be solved but presented in a manner that will go way over your head. But then the show introduces an unanswered twist which calls that into question. So was the Cludo problem actually solved? Does not feel like a logical place to end the series, especially when there is no confirmation of season 2. An extremely amateur 'screw the viewer' move.
Star Trek: Discovery (2017)
Writers and actors should be fired.
Cons:
Story seemed like it was written by a 14yo. Acting is stupid especially the lead, Michael. Overly dramatic and every time she just reaches into her pocket to pull out the script to give an answer on everything.
Pros:
Special effects and a couple of good scenes.
The Beyond (2017)
Better than the average ratings suggests.
This is like Arrival in the sense that there is no mindless space action and being set in the not so distant future, you'll hardly see any 'cool space tech' although some exists. There's not a lot of good scifi movies out there and if you're looking for a bad movie like Transformers, this is not it.
The best part is the realism and believably of it all with the documentary style heavily contributing to it. I frequently found myself thinking, hey this hasn't actually happened.
