Bad Boys for Life (2020)
This Franchise Has Struck Again
Wow, I am really impressed at how this movie turned out. I remember when Bad Boys 2 came out and having a friend who's father did some stunt driving for the film. I am not sure if he was involved in the sequel Bad Boys For Life but it doesn't matter because the film rocked anyway. I managed to see this movie a day before it released (Thursday night instead of Friday) and BOY was I impressed. Action, gritty violence, intrigue, and a villain that you could really sink your teeth into. The plot was intricate enough that you could really feel the suspense that was pulsing through the characters hearts as the events progressed. I felt like the film dealt with topics that pertained to life as we see it today rather than 2003 when the previous film was released. This is awesome because the way we view life is so much different from then! Both Lawrence and Smith have grown into their roles over the years. It is obvious that these characters are far from dead and can be resurrected and played virtually instantaneously. I really recommend that anyone who has managed to stay out of the "crossfire" pick up their "gun" and go see this film tonight!
Unfriended (2014)
Unfriended Can't Be Unfriended
First let me start this review by saying cinematically Unfriended is in a category by itself. This is not to say its plot is novel but the way the film is presented on screen is actually quite impressive. The entire plot of the film unfolds on the computer screen of the main character Blaire Lily. This gives the viewer a first person view of the events and also makes it seem like the plot hence the haunting is almost happening on a computer screen owned by the viewer. With the visual structure out of the way the plot is a relatively simple one. A cyberbullied girl commits suicide and comes back to life online in order to torment her tormentors. While the film doesn't take a particular stance on the topic of cyberbullying it does seem to take notice of actual events which have transpired due to online abuse and harassment. The characters more or less develop themselves as does their relationship with each other. The film does have elements from notorious American teen thrillers as well as comedies however Unfriended presents these awkward moments in a cold and concise manner. I would definitely recommend this film to a friend mostly because of the first person online viewpoint which to my knowledge has not been done in any movie before. I would also recommend the plot because it is a topic relevant to online chatters and young people today because it makes clear that online actions have consequences.
Unbroken (2014)
Intense Recreation of WWII Hero
Unbroken is a very interesting and intellectual film about the trials and tribulations of a WWII veteran. The movie at first is almost an inspirational battle between the hero and himself. As the film progresses this inspiration takes a tremendous turn. The hero as his success amounts begins to show a survival instinct that plays a part in the whole film. The movie in its entirety is a brutal reminder of the reality that this individual despite his talent and bravery was forced to endure. A lot of the scenes were truly heartbreaking in that although his situation and consequences were severe and even at times unfair, he was able to surmount these with an unquenched spirit. Towards the final scenes of the film this reality he created for himself began to pay off. Although he did survive at the end of the movie, despite numerous attempts by his enemy to do otherwise, he brought back a tear jerking tale of oppression and survival despite all odds. Hence the name "Unbroken".
The Expendables 3 (2014)
Star Studded Action Packed Thriller
The Expendables delivers on expectations as an action packed thriller with an all star cast and edge of your seat thrills. Coming into the movie it is easy to expect the loud booms and bangs of your average Arnold Schwarzenegger or Sylvester Stallone action film. The movie however, quickly plunges into an all out manhunt that reminisces of movies such as Silence of the Lambs and The Mask of Zorro. The plot quickly thickens into an emotional tying bind that carries until the closing credits. Mel Gibson does a spectacular job as an arms dealing madman with a score to settle with the "good guys" aka The Expendables. However there is more to this film than simply a few good puns and an entertaining yet concise ending. The truth is put simply the action never stops. The few moments of pausing for character and plot development are accompanied with action sequences that give further credibility to the films characters as more than simply super trained action heroes. These comrades of sorts have individual personalities and combat specialties that play into the films climax almost seamlessly. In other words folks there is no shortage of intense scenes of war-like violence that may disturb younger viewers or the faint of heart. However these scenes are not overtly disturbing as to take away the lighthearted nature of the film as a whole and as a superb blockbuster to end the summer season with.
Godzilla (2014)
Maximum 3D Blockbuster
Godzilla is another highly anticipated release coming to screens for summer 2014. As soon as the movie starts you are plunged into a dizzying array of realistic and actual nuclear footage providing the back drop and subplot for the entire movie. As the characters and plot begin to develop you begin to wonder how much time Godzilla will actually be on screen. Worry not because the giant monster makes his debut and all the scenes featuring him are of doomsday quality and important to the plot. The pure visual aspect of this movie is incredible and awe inspiring especially when seen on a 3d or IMAX screen. Godzilla has a very unique 'personality' and character in this film which is surprising to say the least. He takes on a role of an anti-hero of sorts and actual may have some heroic qualities within him that may add a novel aspect to his screen appearances in comparison to modern takes on the monster cult classic. There are some great dramatic footage in this film as well which add to the air of suspense only to be smashed and grabbed by the ultimate action packed monstrosity hitting screens this summer. Other films be warned, Godzilla is a blockbuster of extreme quality literally roaring off the screen in 3d and dolby digital and is destined to be a future classic.
The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (2014)
Action packed, cgi based, blockbuster
The Amazing Spiderman 2 brings back everyone's favorite web crawler into a dastardly mess of emotional conflict, strained relationships, corporate intrigue and a new villain. There are many reasons to go see this movie not least of which is the popularity and blockbuster nature of this highly anticipated film. As a movie the plot itself stands for itself, barely but does suffice. There are also a lot of great action scenes with high quality cgi based cuts which add to the visual aesthetic of the film. Jamie Fox does an excellent job playing his role which adds to the air of the film and gives a lot of purpose to the plot which otherwise focuses on Spidarman/Peter Parker's personal life. Once you get past the lack luster nature of some of the scenes and cheesy romantic overtones you can actually dive into the characters and get a better understanding of the dark overtones behind the Amazing Spiderman series. All and all this is a must see film of 2014 and a great time if you are looking for 3D action and a highly visual experience.
Brick Mansions (2014)
Great Weekend Blockbuster
Brick Masons is a film centered around a project complex within Detroit. As the Mayor pursues advancement of his city the mere existence of this project impedes his plans. Thus begins a wild ride that none of the players involved could have ever predicted. The film is a quality feature with a lot of intense scenes some of which may not be suitable for children and early teens. The drug related content of this film is relatively high however it is done tactfully. All and all I think Paul Walker's acting in this film is consistent to what you have come to expect from him. The film is fast paced and action packed with plenty of hand to hand combat scenes and high speed driving. A movie like this does much justice to Paul Walkers legacy as it speaks well of the roles he was known to play. The ending of the film is quite light with the major point of conflict solved in a twisted sort of way. It really is a shame that Paul Walker passed as I would have liked to see more of this content outside of the Fast and the Furious franchise. A+ all around.
Shottas (2002)
Must See Cult Gangster Film
I originally found out about this movie while doing research on gangster films from the 90's. I was looking for the coke lord with heavy violence drama that such films as New Jack City and South Central excellently portrayed. I was thrown off by the Jamaican origin and theme at first but decided to watch anyway. I was not disappointed. Shottas is a graphically violent handgun oriented gangster film dealing with ties between the Jamaican Mafia and Miami street life. While the film does focus on the violent coup d'etat preformed by main character Biggs the real focus of the film is the discretion and lifestyle of murder and corruption that the film is based upon. While there are many violent gun toting action scenes the film really comes to shine during a robbery gone wrong at a Jamaican nightclub. The sheer brutality and efficiency of the scene gives rare light into the dark world that the movie takes place in. As a violent rough chino gangster movie Shottas truly excels. There are few films that can deal with dual mafia environments and story lines as entertaining and brutally as Shottas has accomplished. With all said and done if you are a fan of the genre you won't want to miss Shottas.
Poruno sutâ (1998)
Horrifically Entertaining Blockbuster with Cool Name
Tokyo Rampage aka Pornostar is an intensely suspenseful horror film revolving around murder and betrayal within modern day Yakuza. The film starts off with a brief interaction between two unsuspecting characters leading to the backdrop the entire film is developed around. As the film progresses the characters slowly become more nihilistic and violent. Murder becomes more and more unsuspecting and brutal leading to a climax of gargantuan bloodshed. The dramatic elements are well developed centering around a theme of violent nihilism with dark and perverse antiheroes. It is surely a classic of extreme Asian cinema and while being as brutal as it is complete, the most disturbing elements of the film are its intense and frank comparison to modern day youth. It ends with a triumphant bang which can only be described as everything the film promises to be. There are no stones left unturned in this classic murderous film which I feel can only be described as the Asian version of Scarface. Bloody and violent, twisted, and perverse, it is obvious that if you are as fanatical about Asian Cinema as I am you will have zero difficulty adding this to your must watch list.
Muppets Most Wanted (2014)
Timeless Classic Featuring the Muppets
The Muppets Most Wanted features an all star cast of great comedians and talented actors to lead a film destined to be one of the all time greats. A hilarious plot line draws the viewer in as quickly as it is dramatic. Each character is allowed the opportunity to fully develop its unique contribution to the entire film and also provide depth to an overall enjoyable experience. Such lines as "You have Wacka'd your last Wacka bear..." and an all star cameo from actor Ray Liotta as character "Big Papa" lend an upper hand to most recent comedic performances. The film is certainly family friendly and also allows for enjoyment for adult viewers. Put simply this is one of the best Muppets films to date due to its suspenseful plot and the sheer range of performances from each of its characters. The musical soundtrack is of theater quality vocal performances and at times lends itself to Shakespearean dramatic acting. As with past films the hilarious personality of the Muppets lends itself to complete the film as a lighthearted comedy which could have easily become an intensely suspenseful and dramatic film. Highly recommended.
Noah (2014)
Highly inaccurate to the actual book of Genesis.
Highly inaccurate to the actual book of Genisis. Russel Crowe does a half job of representing one of the most famous stories from the bible. The film does come action packed with a few disturbing scenes which may not be suitable for young children. Jennifer does an excellent job playing an emotionally distraught woman which she no doubt has been type casted for. Her range in the film is excellent and really shines through during the end part of the film which due to spoilers I cannot mention. As a whole the film gives a lord of the rings -esque feel to a watered down version of the biblical story. If you are looking for a film that stays to biblical roots such as Ben Hur or The 10 Commandments with modern cgi and great acting you will disappointed. If you are looking for a weekend flick to watch on a date you might find your self minimally entertained.
