Puppets Who Kill (2002)
must-see weirdness!!
This show just started airing on The Comedy Network in Canada... I caught it last night by chance, and it was definitely the funniest and weirdest half-hour of television I've ever seen!! It was great, definitely worth checking out if you have a dark/twisted/unusual sense of humour. If the idea of four homicidal puppets living in a halfway house with a clueless social worker isn't a big enough selling point for you, the puppets swearing, having sex, and removing people's testicles should entice you to tune in. Check it out, Fridays at 10 pm on Comedy - it'll be the most original and hilarious thing you'll see in ages. Although you'll never look at dolls and puppets the same way again... I always knew they were evil.
Aaagh! It's the Mr. Hell Show! (2000)
weird and hilarious
I found this randomly on tv one night, and ended up laughing through the whole 1/2 hour. It's got cool animation, and the bits are hilarious, especially the "victorian woman detective" and the giant squid who keeps eating everyone he tries to befriend. Anyway, check it out... it's very odd but definitely worth watching.
Bram Stoker's Dracula (1992)
nice to look at, but ultimately forgettable
*minor spoilers*
This movie is far from perfect, but I like it purely for the visuals. It's got awesome costumes, makeup and special effects. The whole movie is shrouded in this kind of gothic, candle-dripping, blood-coloured dreamscape, it's pretty cool. Granted, the acting is over-the-top, but it seems to fit with the film's other excesses. Occasionally gory, but nonetheless a nice visual treat.
From this movie I also learned: 1) Keanu Reeves' acting is so wooden, I thought someone had thrown a chair in the room when he appeared onscreen. (keep an eye out for his laughably bad English accent.) 2) when Dracula is old, his hair takes the shape of a bum. Interesting. 3) Tom Waits is infinitely cool.
