Swimfan (2002)
Plot holes, plot holes, confusion...
You know what's not good? A whole theater full of movie goers laughing at a movie that's supposed to be suspensful. There are some things that just defy logic when it comes to this movie... here are a few (warning: I give away some major plot points so don't read this if you don't want to know) *When Madison follows "Jake" into the parking lot and Ben grabs her, she does not say ANYTHING that would incriminate her at all. Ben, on the other hand, is threatening to cut her throat and what not. She just asks if Ben thinks she's stupid and says that she did it for them (as a couple). Then they're all like, "Gotcha! On tape! The police are here! You're arrested!" Craziness... *When Madison is arrested, why did they handcuff her in the front of her body? Why was a police officer sitting in the back of the cop car with a girl they think committed a murder? There was room in the front! And how did she manage to shoot both of the policemen that quickly with handcuffs on? Then how did she get them off? *Madison knows that Ben is a very good swimmer and can pick locks. She has personally witnessed both of these things. Then, WHY does she think it'd be a good idea to tie his girlfriend to a chair while handcuffed and try to drown her? I mean, she has to know that he's going to save her pretty easily. And girlie was only under the water for a few minutes or so... can't she hold her breath? Why was she unconcsious? Also, Madison had the gun from when she escaped the police (or at least that's what one would think). Not that I'm promoting gun violence but why didn't she use it?
There's so much more to ask but I think that gives you my confusion about the film. The only redeeming factor was that it was a nice visual for me seeing Jesse Bradford and his male cohorts minus a shirt :)
Orange County (2002)
musical selection complaint...
If i have to hear that damn Crazytown "Butterfly" song ever again in my life, I'd be too soon. If you've seen this movie, I think you should understand. There are many other good songs on this soundtrack but all I got to hear was the same song about 3 or 4 times! argh.
Last Call with Carson Daly (2002)
in defense of a show i enjoy...
Last Call has nothing to do with the fact that Carson is an MTV VJ. He does not do 'monologues' or try to be a comedian. He just interviews the guests. Most shows are all about pure promotion of a new movie, TV show, whatever. In my opinion, Last Call goes beyond "So, tell me about this movie" and "Let's see a clip." I think that Carson lets people talk (unlike some other reviewers of the show think) and let's them talk about things they normally might not get to talk about. Janine Garafolo was on recently and she sat for almost her whole segment discussing what she DID NOT like about MTV, etc... From my perspective, Carson likes what he's doing at Last Call and I personally hope it continues. The reason Carson isn't like Pauly Shore is because Carson isn't just a sight gag. He isn't the Andy Dick or Tom Green of MTV. What about Jon Stewart? He was on MTV. Being on MTV does not automatically make you incompetent or incapable of ever being successful again. I think some people need to give the show a chance and actually watch it before they judge it.
Crossroads (2002)
"That is crazy!"
Crossroads... there are so many questions.
1) They sing in a karoake contest at a bar and somehow make enough money to pay $350 for car repairs and a high class hotel room. That's not even including the nice hotels they slept in for the rest of the trip and other expenses.
2) Why is this movie so predictable? I mean, OF COURSE the boyfriend is cheating. C'mon. But they could of at least spiced it up a little. Maybe he could be with another guy! The plot twist was good with him and Mimi... I won't give the one 'surprise' element away to those who haven't seen the movie.
3) In the scene where the girls are rebonding and sharing life stories, Britney (oh, sorry, Lucy) tells them about the drama surrounding her mother leaving her when she was 3. If they were friends when they were young, wouldn't they already know that her mom wasn't a part of the picture? It's not like they just met.
4)The movie covered every issue possible as quickly as you can say "7th Heaven". Teen pregnancy, drinking, love, abandonment, parental problems (although no real mention is made of Mimi's parents, the fact that she's the 'trailer park girl' is mentioned frequently), unity, abuse, rape, miscarriage (oops... sorry. you know i was REAL tempted to say 'I did it again' there but i was strong!) But the most classic scene of the movie would have to be when Lucy aka Brit Brit reads her 'poetry', which is the spoken words of "I'm Not a Girl, Not Yet a Woman". I laughed out loud. Literally, knee-slapping laughing. While I went in knowing it wasn't going to be an Oscar winning flick, it didn't completely suck. If you're going to see it, make sure to go to a matinee or wait until it's at cheap theatres or better yet, on video and DVD. It's not worth $8.00-$10.00. But I still love ya Brit... and Justin is ten times better than Ben (was his last name Pimple?)! lol.
Summer of Sam (1999)
this was not a horror movie... a whore movie maybe
This movie was not only not scary but it was just dirty. It was soft core porn. There was no suspense and a lot of it was just stupid and confusing. It was not enjoyable. Maybe if you're a Spike Lee fan or were alive during that time, you could appreciate it more but as for me and my friends, we hated it. A waste of some serious time.
Daddy (1987)
Forced to watch this in school
wow... i was forced to watch this in my lifestyles theology class during our section on sexuality. the lesson we all learned from it was if you say no, you become valedictorian but if you don't, you have a kid, who cries all the time, drop out of school, go on welfare, have a boyfriend who really doesn't know if he loves you or not and he eventually ends up working at an ice cream shop and going to night school. lol. just bad but amusing.
The Babysitter's Seduction (1996)
GREAT!
This movie is so great... it really is. I originally saw it years ago on NBC, I believe, when it was a movie of the week and I loved it. Since then, they've reshown it on Lifetime many times and it is one of my all time favorite Lifetime movies. Collins displays his range as an actor playing this horribly evil and sleazy guy, a total contradiction to his character on "7th Heaven". To most, it may not be quality stuff but to me, it's a serious 'guilty pleasure'. Good times. :)
Love, Mary (1985)
Can you believe I was forced to watch this in school?
I was forced to watch this movie for my LifeStyles Theology class, and if nothing else, it amused me. I'm sure there was a good message behind it all but some parts were so unintentionally funny... There are too many random things happening in this movie. They go to commercial, come back and she has a baby! And then she's pregnant again, with no explanation as to who the father is. After being forced to use a walker after complications during childbirth, she miraculously just throws it down and walks away. Her father makes the comment, "Wow, you did that left handed." They never really explained why she got into so much trouble when she was younger. All that we learn is that she has dyslexia and her family was poor, which apparently led to stealing cars. She and David, her love interest, break up for no apparent reason, and then, what do you know? Next scene, it says "One Year Later", he's at the door and pours rice on her head. They get married. Had they been dating this whole time? Was that a single fight and then they made up? I don't know... Too many unanswered questions. If this was based on a real woman, kudos to her for surviving through the drama that was her life but the movie did her no justice.
